Windows 10

//rant begin

I have now been using windows 10 for a few weeks and it pisses me off with the constant updates.

You are in the middle of the work day and your laptop is heating up from doing god's knows what in the background.

Other times the OS eats up your bandwidth downloading gigs of updates.

From windows XP to now, there is no real improvement in the user experience. Microsoft keeps messing with the UI, they have dumbed down the OS to have an "Appy" look. Does anyone actually buy anything from the windows store??

I am gonna finally take the time and go full out Linux. It has been a long time coming.

Why don't you set it up to update at 3:00 a.m when you should be in bed cuddled up to something warm, even if it's only a blanket?

I am gonna ignore that attempt to cast your short comings on me.

The point is I have a enough to do already, why do I need to spend so much time managing these blasted updates.

I think POINT is advising you to schedule the update for 3:00 AM. That's about when mine is scheduled.

Work with it.

I am working with the expectation that a newer more advanced OS would actually be less work for me...also I do not know how to do that

In terms of a traditional keyboard and mouse experience 10 is a step back. But remember Microsoft was (and has) taken a beating from Tablets so Metro UI (it was called at the time when it came out for Windows Phone) was the solution to unify the UI for phones, tablets and pc.

So yea. It sucks.

A long time ago I decided to give Linux a try. First went Redhat. Then tried some other dists. I will go back there soon cuz the malware will be bad this year.

I use Ubuntu a lot for servers, but not as my working environment. Everytime I think about going to Linux, I get a bit scared because I dont know if there are equivalent programs for the ones I use on windows.

Malware issue is minimal for me, I dont download porn(anymore) or movies. I dont download strange programs. The only vector to get to me is thru office attachments that are sometimes necessary.

But with leaked NSA tools it seems you don't have to do anything bad to get F'ed.

I have been using desktop Ubuntu for about a decade now. I have only 2 serious gripes: video drivers and lack of CAD software.

The video issues have lessened over time. In general, nVidia and Intel video cards work best. Radeon could be poor for graphics.

In recent months, the availability of Office online and Netflix through Google Chrome have made Ubuntu even more usable. LibreOffice is great for most things, but a few minor issues at times (export to HTML, the size of PDF files, import pdf, etc) could be slightly irritating. Excel macros also run a whole lot faster that LibreOffice macros, but you could accomplish anything with LibreOffice.

Gimp is great for graphics, and there is plenty of free guidance for it out there now. Irfanview is a great Windows graphics tool that will work perfectly on Linux via Wine. Linux browsers will work well with youtube, etc, but some sites have Windows-specific browser plugins, which could be a pain.

When it's time to find that special website to watch cricket for free, or download something special, I use only Linux! Nothing defies malware, viruses, etc, more than Linux!

Can you survive on Linux only, after living for years in a Windows only world? You could - about 90 percent of the time. I always set up my computers to dual boot, into either Linux or Windows.

Appreciate the run down.

Two of my computers run Ubuntu desktop, one is to run Kodi and the other is to run a hotspot software. I do development on LAMP platforms and as such I always have a Linux VM running. I am by no means a Linux newbie, but I have not had the courage to transition it to my working computer.

I alway am under the asumption that the NSA,CIA etc are listening to my conversations, logging the sites I visit and sifting thru my mail. Yet, I dont think they would f' up my computer. After all, if my PC is dead, how would they continue to get my info.

Well because since their high level tools are out people alter them and use them for profit. Like Ransomware.

From what I have seen of the tools released, they are binaries. They provide a particular function. Who knows if they have undocumented features, such as tracking and reporting the users of said tools.

I have not concerned myself with it. Probably because I would not understand. But I figured these tools allowed for the exploitation of PCs to the malware writers. They gave them the keys to our computers.

The public outcry from MSFT suggests that. That the Government find these exploits and do not inform them.

Since i've gone MAC, i have no regrets leaving windows behind. Me myself got fed up of their constant updates that I even turned it off - I know not a great idea but that's the extent it got too me.

Why you guys don't see this as efficiency by Microsoft and being on the ball at all times? smile

We dont view it as efficient that u have to fix your software multiple times a day interrupting people's work etc
