Afghanistan, Ireland get Test status

Narper 2017-06-22 11:06:52

Afghanistan and Ireland have been approved as Full Members by the ICC, meaning they have become cricket's 11th and 12th Test-playing nations. This was signed off on by the ICC Board in London on Thursday, during the ICC's AGM.

Afghanistan and Ireland's boards had applied to the ICC to have their status upgraded from Associates, and this was put to vote at the meeting on Thursday and unanimously supported.

12 test teams...now is de perfect time for Tier one and Tier two.....with two getting relegated and two getting promoted every two years! lol lol

Afghanistan, on the other hand, have grown tremendously since they received their One-Day status in 2011. Having failed to reach the World Cup the same year, the Asian side has made giant steps in ODIs and Twenty20 cricket. They qualified for the 2015 World Cup and won their first game in the mega event by beating Scotland.

The Asian side has been in the ascendancy for quite a while now. Their journey graph is on an upward curve and they are more formidable than any other associate nation, including Ireland, whom they beat in a recently held ODI and T20I series. Afghanistan recently drew the ODI series 1-1 in West Indies.

It comes as a no surprise that a team consisting of Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan, who are making waves for participating in different leagues around the globe, will now be able to test their skills in the longest form of the game.

Ireland have been knocking on the doors of the ICC for quite some time. Having played their first 50-over World Cup in 2007 and immediately making an impact by beating Pakistan, Ireland have since participated in every ICC event, causing a few upsets along the way.

gvenkat 2017-06-22 11:16:49

Here comes tier-2. lol lol

On a serious note, though. What's the point? I'm sure Afghanistan and Ireland are not going to be hosted by Australia, SA,India,England at least for 2-3 years.

As such Tests are a drag. Watching these minnows get mauled will be even more painful

The point is that these emerging teams tend to have a larger, more enthusiastic fan base and could potentially generate decent revenue when they host. This applies mostly to Ireland than to Afghanistan (touring there is always going to be complicated situation). If you want a better picture, just imagine that west indies hosts Ireland. 5 people might show up and they all got free tickets. but if west indies is touring Ireland you might see 5000 people instead.

I think the points you brought up here are good corroboration for having 2 tiers: A big 6, and a Low 6

Then as Wes alluded, every year (or cycle) 2 drop down and 2 get promoted

ICC is just making up numbers here to move to 2 tiers which makes perfect sense. The top 6 will generate the cash flow needed to help support and strengthen the bottom tier....

Ridge 2017-06-22 12:02:33

In two years time West Indies will be at the bottom of the points table in tests.

Ireland beating WI easy in tests

Tryangle 2017-06-22 13:47:56

What's a bit concerning is that with this 'decision', Afghanistan and Ireland's revenue shares is still undefined except as coming from the (already diminished) Associates pot.

They're still second class citizens (well technically third-class).

My next question is, does this close the door on other Associates? Does a Scotland, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, now have to jump through even larger hoops for a chance to play at the highest level?

With regard to gvenkat's comment about getting the opportunity to play Tests, maybe teams touring England will deign to play Ireland in one or two Tests before or afterwards. Afghanistan's tougher, but then again Pakistan don't play home Tests either. Maybe Sharjah and Abu Dhabi get new 'tenants'?

Where does Pakistan play Tests?

Until a venue within Afghanistan is approved, it shouldn't be a problem for UAE to host matches.

VIX 2017-06-22 15:35:40

fantastic be this embryonic stage of tiered cricket!!

hastening the demise of tests and eventually ODIs.

Only the one true form will remain!! big grin

Exactly...Afghanistan already host matches in the UAE, where they get good attendances for their limited overs games. A lot of Afghans work in the UAE....

Pakistan's Test cricket will continue to attract only three men and a dog in the UAE...much like the West Indies, then.

granite 2017-06-24 06:39:40

Pure fcukeries dat,if that goes thru then I hope to see Jamaica,Bim,Guyana and TT in the ring, shouldn't be a problem, but still I say, pure fcukeries.

Maybe those countries should go it alone....

This is Afghanistan's progress to Test status:

2008 - started in Division Five, won it that year

2008 - promoted to Division Four, won it that year

2008 - promoted to Division Three

2009 (January) - won Division Three, promoted to Division One

They skipped Division Two! So, in just two years, they reached Division One....

2017 - Test status.

Within nine years of starting at the bottom of the ladder, they achieved Test status. Some folks in the Big Four of the Caribbean should be chewing on that....
cool
Having said that, what's the point of getting Test status, if nobody's going to watch it? The money and the attendance is in T20 cricket, and they already have the CPL....

Future is T20 cricket and a little bit of ODI cricket, tournaments mostly, not bilateral series.

GOING ALONE is the WRITING ON THE WALL.

Tryangle 2017-06-27 10:26:36

In reply to thefacts

The point is respect. Look at how people here and elsewhere show disdain to cricketers from non Test nations. People on this board call Afghanistan and Ireland by the derogatory term of minnows in spite of what their teams have to go through just to compete.

And even though Test matches have lost popularity, it's still considered the most pure form of the game and the standard by which great players are weighed.

So let Rashid Khan and his stablemates get the opportunity.
