Just learnt why Gayle played.
Reliable sources say it has nothing to do with sense suddenly breaking out in CWIn circles.
Gayle played because the Indians said they wanted him to play. They felt this would draw bigger crowds but far more importantly, bigger Indian television revenue.
I assume they also called for the inclusion of the other big stars.
They also overruled CWI on the time of play... to meet Indian television preferences.
With Gayle making a statement today as to when he might retire (2019) and his plan to play more Tests for West Indies one might wish to conclude that Indian tv revenue just might have something to do with it also....
In the meantime Mr. Evin Lewis is making a great name for himself. Congratulations! Gayle's boots are beginning to look a bit smaller now.

Why Gayle played - the real reason

The early start is what stopped the match from being a sellout. Jamaican people go church in the morning. Those who don't go to church like to sleep in a little late on a Sunday morning.
This was geared to Indian television.
At least the CPL is geared to maximising spectator audiences. That's why my extended family is more interested in the CPL than the west indies.
can we get them to pick our team more often?
Maybe we should also get them to work the gates to ensure that all monies collected are accounted for when the crowds are so huge....

To make a long story short:
India tek ova!

Jamaicans going to church? Is the church teaching them to kill in a hurry? 43 in five days.:.

You really think dat if Indian cricketers were allowed to play in de CPL dat de organisers wud opt for filling small stadia in de Caribbean over TV revenues? If you think so ah have a bridge selling cheap.
By de way ah understand dat dey raising de price of admission dis year

What you say makes sense...but have you considered that the Windies players who excelled in the IPL were also selected?...Pollard, Narine, Badree? What's more believable is that BCCI demanded Windies best available players..not just Gayle.
Gayle's is on the decline and, like Mike Tyson after the Buster Douglas fight, his destructive aura is diminishing. Today's modest returns serve as an example.
In reply to Kay
Apparently they did! My sources tell me that the people collecting money at the gates were all Indian. He could not say if they were Jamaican Indian but said they looked and spoke more like Indian Indian.

Yes, that is true.
But according to my sources The Indians specifically wanted Gayle because he is a biog draw for their audiences.

Dang yuh have nerve... no self respecting Yardie will ever go to Kensington oval when England are on tour. .... it is a virtual home game. for them. The former colonial masters are assured of a warm welcome from the locals.... more often than not at the expense of the home team and their supporters
I remember us touring England when Lara wanted a break from the game and England demanded that an unfit Lara make the trip.
Difference then would be that England didn't have us by the balls and that an unfit Lara was still gonna be better than anyone else we had available.
Wow, all that venom being excreted.
...and all because the Kolhi's Hindians were on the receiving end of a sound cut-arse.
Only real surprise here though is that the venom is not being directly spewed at the WICB/CWI (for a change).
In reply to WestDem... imagine if we weren't going. However, eave this one alone.
In reply to Drapsey... them true colours shining through.
So how come the BCCI didn't make demands when it was the ODIs?
In reply to archangel
Probably because they wanted to make sure that India won the series!
In reply to WestDem Everybloody knows what talks N what walks!

You didn't know that?
