Kuhn out for 34. So, he's scored 44 runs from three Test innings at an average of 15. I know it's early days, and he needs a run, but at 33, his time span will probably be as long as the guy he replaced - Stephen Cook. If this is the best of the cupboard, you can see why Duminy had such a long run in the side. Yes, a Test average of about 33 might seem mediocre, but if your replacements are Kuhn and de Bruyne, who are both yet to notch up a half-century, then Duminy was not really keeping a talented batsman out of the side. I hope they both prove me wrong, but I'm not holding my breath....
37.4
Dawson to Amla, SIX, down the ground, and that is seriously handsome! Hands through the line of the ball, a lofted drive, right onto the rope itself, which means Amla has his fifty! Only 108 more to lift his average to the same...
HM Amla 50 (93b 6x4 1x6)
In reply to Narper
Didn't some of the Indian brigade tell us that Amla done?
In reply to mikesiva
Don't understand the selection of Kuhn tbh . I think they want to want to reward a guy that has scored well in the domestic.Mike Hussey he ain't.
Aiden Markram is there , but I think the selectors are scared of throwing such a young guy against Broad/Anderson ? Only thing I can honestly think of.
There is actually pretty good young South African opener in this game.Just a pity he is playing against us
I've seen De Bruyn play quite a bit.Very good player against pace and hits the horizontal bat shots with massive power.I have serious reservations with his technique against spin. He's gonna have a tough time with that backfoot technique of his against good spin.At the end of the day they gotta give the guy the opportunity to see if he can sink or swim at international level. Will need some technical guidance if he's gonna make it on the international scene.
The fact that someone that was averaging low 30's and batting 4-6 for 10 years should be pretty eye opening how poor our standards have become.

Broad to de Kock, OUT, strikes first ball! As so often, the interval does the trick. A length ball outside off, de Kock goes after it, aiming to play square through the off side, and it flies off the top edge to Cook at first slip

Broad to Amla, OUT, and this time he's found deep square leg! He's been flirting with that dismissal throughout the innings. A short ball from Broad, around off stump, Amla can't keep it down and the top edge this time reaches the fielder - Wood near the rope

Stokes to du Plessis, OUT, fantastic catch down the leg side! Wonderful take by Bairstow, but du Plessis has reviewed straightaway. Given very quickly by Reiffel. Looks like it's come off the hip from front on. Well, well...there's a mark on Snicko! It's taken the glove on the way. He's gone. Super decision on-field and an even better catch by Bairstow to flung himself to his left

Have to say Verns batting has really impressed me so far this tour. His defensive game is so much better than before.
Some of our so called batsmen could learn a lot from how he focuses on putting away the bad balls to transfer pressure back onto the bowlers.
In reply to djdrastic
He looks as good as all the batsmen who batted before him, even looks better than some.Who is the last fast bowler we have seen bat like that.

Two wickets each for Philander, Morkel and Maharaj so far, Root out, South Africa on top at tea.
So far, it looks like Olivier may be the one to make way for the return of Rabada. Olivier isn't really doing much to date.
The batting of Morris is no worse than the batting of de Bruyne.
WTF are the Saffies appealing for and the idiot ump must be really deaf an blind to give that out! stupid and embarrassing cricket!
In reply to NineMiles
The embarrassment is the England batting!
England 205 all out....
Morris wrapped up the tail....
Good contributions from Philander, Morkel and Maharaj.
It's looking likely that Olivier will be the one to make way for Rabada in the third Test.
Let's see if Kuhn can save his place in the side with a better batting performance....

When he bowled Bairstow he was compared to the great Bishen Singh Bedi for that delivery.
Miller and Permaul are never encouraged but actively discouraged....with non selection in spite of sterling performances..credit to dem they still deliver year after year at the regional FC level
In reply to Narper
I have to agree with you, absolutely no encouragement, I forgot the other left arm othordox spinner Moti.
In reply to Narper
In this unusually dry English summer, it makes sense to carry more than one spinner in the squad...England have played two spinners in both Tests so far - Moeen and Dawson.

Bat out the opposition is the first order of business.
