HEADLINE: Davis queries WI team selections for England Test series

CaribbeanCricket.com 2017-07-24 06:41:29

EX-TRINIDAD and Tobago and West Indies opening batsman Bryan Davis has queried the selection of the 15-member Windies team for their forthcoming three-Test series, away to England.

Among the players chosen by the selection panel, headed by Courtney Browne, were Barbadian-born Kyle Hope (who is an opening batsman for the TT Red Force) and Raymon Reifer (a left-handed all-rounder for the Guyana Jaguars).

Both Hope and Reifer are the only members of the 15-man team who are yet to play Test cricket, while Reifer has never featured at the international level.

In a recent interview, Davis commented, “These fellahs are very fortunate because they’re Bajans. There are nine Barbadians on the team. The last time you had nine Barbadians on a touring team like that was to England in 1966.

I remember it well.

“Now that seems to be starting again (under the new selection panel). I’m seeing more and more Barbadians, of very average ability, being forced into the team, and given second looks all the time. I’m seeing a lot of personal insularity in this thing.

Now some Bajans will show up asking where was Bryan when his countryman Carew as head-selecta used to fill up the team with his Trini countrymen.

And if you don’t have the right technique, and you don’t move your feet and get in line with the ball, you’re in trouble

Obivously dont know that the stats...9...5..0..0..6 belongs to mr good technique Daren Ganga in Eng.

..and as skipper to boot.

A lot of top players reckon this "move your feet thing" is BS...or at least overated.

Courtney Browne dropped the ball. He should have picked 11 Bajans. Maybe after the England tour if WI don't get beaten too badly.

How many players have played a full season in England?

How many players can play the moving ball?

The above experience cannot be taught in a couple of weeks
in camp by Law.

This is what Davis is referring to.

Let us post facts.

Ganga made the team based on his middle order batting for T&T.

He was thrown into the opening bat position.

Notice the position he played for T&T.

He was giving the captaincy owing to injuries and had little
support from team mates.

See the difference leading T&T in India.

So who are his alternatives? Trinis with sub 30 batting averages like Lewis,Bravo,Simmons and Pollard?

Kyle Hope topped the Trinidad batting averages in the four day tournament, Raymon Reifer was by far the leading allrounder in the Guyana batting and bowling averages and this man bemoaning the team full of Bajans. (May I add the leading allrounder in the Trinidad four day team was another Bajan,Primus)

I have no beef with Beaton but Cummins for example has played in English conditions and he is a swing bowler with pace...so to me it is touch and go. Beaton for the experienced Roach is also touch and go but Roach and Cummins lead all the fastbowlers in the four day tournament bowling averages.

Bravo, Simmons can't be in the equation as at the time of picking the squad, amnesty wasn't reach as yet. So to be fair to Browne and co, that was off the table.

My biggest beef with the selectors is the apparent easy "excuse" to shove in some, and leave out some. You have a few people who can't even make BIM list A team but been ah play for West Indies. That is utter ******* of the highest calibre.

Kraigg, Shai, Chase, Holder, Dowrich, Cummins all have merit to the test team, so it's nothing against bajan. And as far as i'm concern, Kyle Mayers is a better pick for England than Raymon Reifer. The opener cupboard very bleak as well so can't blame them for trying Kyle Hope. Powell got a good bit of ODI's and didn't capitalise. If you check regionals, not much openers putting up them hands to chose from.

Irrelevant!
His so-call "good technique" was suppose to help him in England.

All it did was made him a walking LBW.

The post was about the current selections.

If you have decided to bring back Bravo there is no cricketing reason he is behind some of that squad.

Pick your team Bryan, then we can have a discussion, the same goes for all people on this mb.
Pick allyuh teams, lets see if we agree to any player, being selected.

I think his point is that they are all mediocre whether they come from Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana or Win/Lee Islands, so why not an equal distribution of the shytehounds instead of 9 from Bim? smile

Base on what? I doubt it performance over the last 2 years, during the regional 4-day tournament.

dayne 2017-07-24 12:54:57

The WI team should be praying for hot late summer weather in England, that would give them a climatic chance, the ball would move around less. However, IMO the Selectors had very little options, the only suspect selection IMO is Reifer, I would have picked a specialist in place of him, either Nurse, Cornwall or invent an excuse for the inclusion of Darren Bravo, the most experience batsman.

jen 2017-07-24 13:48:51

In reply to openning

When you aint have world beaters, I believe horses for courses is the way to go. Kyle Mayers is a swing bowler, consistent line and length. Bowling more suited to english style conditions.

A fella like Johnson Charles will be good for Australia/India ODIs (not so for slower, lower tracks) more so than others. Australia does only pick Shaun Marsh for the sub continent now, we have wusserer players and feel a man must be good for all series.

Sending this team to play England without Bravo or Samuels, will be like a lamb to the slaughter, which deeply aggravates me for my desire is for WI to beat England every time we play against them for their partly responsibility in the demise of WI cricket.

However, I totally agreed with my Trini friend, the team could have been more evenly selected. For they are all mediocre players.

Che, what Bryan Davis should have realized and admit, all those Bajans on that 1966 tour deserved their pick. They were some of the top performer in the regional tournament.

Here were the top performers for the previous season.

I wonder which one of those Bajans he would have dropped.

Bunch of loud (FAKE NEWS) talkers! Funny thing, as a youth back then this was never a conversation piece. Once the WI was winning and playing well, where the players was from was never an issue. Cricket brought us all together back then. I can never remember going to a cricket match not looking for great players to do well against Barbados. I went for the show of great cricket not this country against country pull down. I didn't care if Maurice Foster bat two days, or Freddo hooked all day or Roberts put the fear of god in the Bajans batsmen. I went for the everlasting memories the great players left me with.

A very good post bro, I felt the same way
One of the best regional centuries I saw, was by a Jamaican wicketkeeper batsman, he took his blows from the bajan attack, but went on to score a ton, and was applauded by the entire Kensington crowd.

When folks like Davis get into this kind of talk it makes you wonder because he came from a time when cricket talk was about cricket. Not the kind of garbage that goes on now.

Freddo walking out with BIG AfRO and fellows trying their best to give him a shave only to be hooked all over Kensington or any ground in the Caribbean! Pity the arguments now from those that never got to see all of the greatness from all over the West Indies.

pelon 2017-07-25 15:23:18

Nothing good can come off of a heavily one sided selector/his national team ratio.

If we lose: cuss and blame bajans
If we lose badly: cuss and blame bajans, point rightfully to the myopic preview of the selector/chairman.
If we win (chuckling): you've alienated a region already torn to the seems with insularity. How do you celebrate the win in a regional context, if it feels like a "Bajanized" team?

I rather balance talent over the region as we rebuild, than to lay a heavy hand and picking from any singular country. It does not promote regional team/fan unity.

WI History has it recorded that it does not work in your favour. I present a different perspective: the team is no stronger with 9 Bajans.

Anyhow. My half ass opinion is open to scrutiny, yet completely irrelevant smile smile

Cleg 2017-07-25 15:26:26

In reply to seaegg99

I agree with all you said there ...even though insularity still exist back then.....ask Sobers.

The difference is ...that was back in the day when most of the players if not all merit their pick.

With these mediocres...the least they can do is use the "quota".

sudden 2017-07-25 16:30:11

In reply to pelon

that makes no sense and in itself could lead to discrimination. in other words you seem to be selecting players on a quota system and not on ability.

at one time Ja had 6 men on the side and there wasnt much complaints. at one time TT and Antigua another time.

it is only when it is Bim that it causes issues.

i say Fuck um who vex vex.

Really I just want to see the youngmen develop and get us back to some semblance of a competitive team. These guys all have the physical part but are lacking in the mental areas of the game. Really don't care where there are from just let me enjoy cricket again!

VoopsandOut 2017-07-25 21:46:18

In reply to CaribbeanCricket.com

Bryan,

These guys do not have the benefit of playing for Glamorgan for years like you did and the talent pool may not be as deep as in your time. However, the last time 9 Bajans were picked was 1966 tour which has always been labelled as the Golden Summer of English cricket. We didnt do too badly then and with some application and attention to the basics we will not do too badly next month. I am going to England to support our guys.

Right, they have to be corrected everytime,at the time Ganga was the only batsman who could stay at the crease for considerable times,he was just used to hang around and get the shine off the ball. The fact that he scored centuries in both innings of a match against a top Oz attack, showed he could bat in the middle where he was supposed to play.As Emir said this is not about what an individual did some years ago,it's about selection criteria today.

Cleg 2017-07-26 12:36:34

...and what was his average for that series?

I will give you a clue....Ganga aka 96002 never average 28 at any instance over his entire 48 tests career!!

both innings of a match

Funny match that..1 innings in Georgetown and the other in Port of Spain.

CITYBOY 2017-07-26 12:44:43

Hola....
Its very distressing to read previous /retired test players comments like these. How does it make those selected to represent West Indies feel?..If these players cannot get the respect and support of past players then something is terribly wrong.
We may disagree with some of the players selected, but to suggest its " BIASNESS" because a majority of players are from one country is just absurd.
If Mr.Davis wants more of his country people selected then I would recommend that he gets involve in raising the standard of his countrymen.....and let them(as they say)..tear up the PCL.
Time to stop this nonsense of calling for your own..
Adios

I have observed that those who push the various conspiracy theories, have short memories and have little regard for facts. I also think that because we are loosing, the frustration level is high and as a result, it becomes easy to blame the Chairman of selectors who apparently has sole responsibility for team composition.
