Tropical Storm Gert ahem Harvey

Chrissy 2017-08-13 21:50:23

will be a fish storm

Pay attention to the one behind Gert.

1. A large and complex area of disturbed weather to the south and
southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands is associated with a broad
trough of low pressure and a tropical wave. These systems are
forecast to merge over the next day or two, and environmental
conditions are then expected to be conducive for development of
this disturbance later this week while it moves westward at about
15 mph over the tropical Atlantic.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...40 percent.

Chrissy 2017-08-14 05:13:30

up to 50% chance in five days.

Oddly enough, the word "Gert" is a local Bermudian slang term meaning "large/enormous". But yeah, we're watching it but not expecting anything from it.

Gert will be harmless on this side of the pond.

Watch the one behind.

Did Gert affect you? The remnants of ex-hurricane Gert are approaching the UK now, along the jet stream....

Chrissy 2017-08-17 05:10:24

In reply to mikesiva

Gert will be a bigger problem in Britain and Europe.
Bermuda probably got some big waves.
We have to watch this one although I'm not sure yet whether we'll have to worry about a TS or a hurricane.
The experts are flying in today.

Our worry will also be whether it shifts NW - right now it looks more like Central America, but our South-East and South Coasts folks better pay attention.

Chrissy 2017-08-17 05:11:13

In reply to dale_staple

Up to 70% now.

We got a good chunk of rain last night and this morning in patches, and expect to see more later today and tomorrow. Winds are a bit higher, but nothing to fret about by any stretch.

Chrissy 2017-08-17 09:52:19

80% in 48hours
90% in five days
1. Morning satellite imagery shows that shower activity associated
with a low pressure system centered about 550 miles east of the
Lesser Antilles has become better organized overnight, and buoy
data indicates that the circulation is becoming better defined.
Environmental conditions appear generally conducive for development,
and a tropical depression could form later today or tonight as the
system moves westward at about 15 mph. Regardless of development,
locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected to spread across
portions of the Lesser Antilles and the eastern Caribbean Sea
tonight and Friday, and interests in these areas should monitor the
progress of this system. An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter
aircraft is scheduled to investigate the disturbance this afternoon.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...high...80 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...high...90 percent.

Barbados is now under a tropical storm warning.
In an advisory, the Barbados Meteorological Services said the area of low pressure east of the island has been upgraded to Potential Tropical Cyclone #9.
At 11 a.m., the centre of the system was located near 13.1 degrees North, 54.1 degrees west or about 365 miles east of Barbados.
The system is moving westward at 17 miles per hour and on that track, the centre is expected to pass near or over the island early tomorrow morning.
Maximum sustained winds are near 35 miles per hours with higher gusts.
The Met Office says Barbadians can expect moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds to spread across island from tonight into tomorrow.
A small craft warning will also take effect from 6 p.m. The system is expected to generate large easterly swells of at least 2.5 to 3.0 metres (8 to 10 feet).
The forecasters warn that some flooding is likely in low-lying areas and they have urged residents to be alert and take all necessary precautions.
The next weather bulletin will be issued at 2 p.m.

Headley 2017-08-18 08:06:24

Harvey produced the longest thunder and lightening storm I have ever witnessed (and I have experienced some in Florida) 3 continuous hours from 1:30 to 4:30 am. (What Florida has and is very unusual in the Caribbean is forked lightening.) The brightness of the lightening and the loudness of the thunder was amazing. The lapse time between light and sound suggests it was right above my bed.

Rain 3-5 inches, enough to create 4 feet of water at the traffic lights in Speightstown. As usual the main drain in Speightstown was full almost up to the bridge at Fishersman's Pub.

Videos in circulation. Should be on You Tube.

Yes especially up in the north. Heading up Maynard's later will report

All clear given. Public sector to report at work for 12 apparently. Some roads are impassable so they still have to clear. Buses are starting to be put on routes that are clear

British people don't respect bad weather. If it was coming on a Monday people would be going to work and about half a dozen people would die. Thankfully it seems to be coming on a Sunday.

Chrissy 2017-08-18 12:40:56
