Pat Castagne composed the National Anthem

Pat Castagne (1916-2000) composed the National Anthem. Castagne led an amazing life and was a prolific composer though not one whose other work is appreciated as much these days.

Born in Guyana, he spent his formative years in Trinidad and at times he spent substantial parts of his career in England, Canada, Barbados, even the United States. He was a prolific composer of a number of different styles of music.

He grew up in Woodbrook and joined the government Customs office in September of 1939, but with World War II joined the Army and stayed for eight years. He started as a private and by the time he left was a captain, married with three children. For a time, he moved the family to Canada but his wife disliked the long and cold winters so they moved back after a couple of years.

Castagne worked for Radio Trinidad from 1949 to 1952. He was first a script writer, then a programme administrator and finally the station manager. He was very proud that while there he pushed through a provision that calypsonians got paid for the live broadcasts.

Poachers killing a symbol of Independence

The scarlet ibis is Trinidad and Tobago’s national bird, our people’s symbol of freedom, to see it is a joy and reminder that as a nation, we have since 1962 we have enjoyed soaring higher and higher at our leisure, to wherever we wish to and all for our pleasure.
And yet there are some who cut down the scarlet ibis, felling it from the skies to satisfy fleeting yearnings.
We hunt, we kill and we eat our national bird. We celebrate Independence, Republic Day, holidays! Do we know, understand or care what it all means?

No matter what I ever say about TT I will always feel Trini and love Trinidad, won't ever forget my time there, especially San Fernando. My regret is that I didn't grow up in TT,i missed so much, especially all dem sweet Dougla gurlz.I wish TT a very successful 55th birthday and an end to some of our ills,we are a unique little country and everybody will understand what I mean,no need to explain.
Respect!
