A few capable hands needed

black 2017-09-07 07:03:01

Can we setup our own relief fund right here? We have several capable people on here who can do it.

We are not twitter but we can challenge ourselves to a donation target all of us can be proud of.

black 2017-09-07 07:34:57

We can even get friends and family to donate here.

ray 2017-09-07 07:54:22

I already donated to that $8 billion Congress approved

Noble!

Distribution and responsibility for other peoples donations is problematic. Giving and getting is the easy part. Distribution as an independent fund is tricky.

I applaud your thoughts, but advise caution and make sure you have a detailed plan for distribution. Not all donations get to their intended cause!

Point well taken.

If we cannot do it here, we still need to donate.

Long before the storm YOU can donate in a proactive way.

How many times have you seen Chrissy or the skunt pelon post about weather. How many times have you seen me encourage someone here to take up emergency comms as a side hobby - it saves lives. Look at Barbuda, almost 24hr without contact to the outside world. Why? No portable long distant radio on the island.

We can be proactive "donators" just by leveraging knowledge and information.... and when the time comes... follow up with a donation to the appropriate cause.

I have two meetings today about post disaster communications... in lieu of Barbuda.

Good on you and Chrissy.

I would like to get the most "bang for the buck". Any recommendations on relief organizations that distribute MOST of their funds to relief?

Some organizations use most of their donations on other expenses.

Robert DeNiro. I heard he had a mansion or something in Barbuda... I'm sure you can give him your money so he can rebuild too.

Seriously tho... Red Cross? Maybe?

I mostly donate to the Red Cross, and in the case of the aftermath of the last earthquake that devastated Haiti, I donated to Doctors without Borders.

Cool. Red Cross is 1 of many for me.

Relative to Hurricane Harvey, Houston Food Bank I did donate with recently AND when your company matches your donation, it's a double. Can't beat that.

Found some info on what DeNiro was planning in Barbuda.....

Robert De Niro And Billionaire James Packer Will Transform Barbuda With Luxury Overwater Resort

Robert De Niro And Billionaire James Packer Will Transform Barbuda With Luxury Overwater Resort

At a press conference in Barbuda, Robert De Niro commented about the planned development "I have been coming to Antigua and Barbuda since I was in my early twenties. It’s about the location and the people. It's special. I have been treated very well there by the present government. It’s a new government, they are young and enthusiastic and more development oriented. It just so happened that everything has aligned properly with Mr. Bustane and the Prime Minister who are very much for the development and that is a big help.

They purchased 251 acres of the former K Club and will spend over $250 million developing the area.

In a new statement by Ambassador Gilbert Boustany "Once they start construction of the hotel (phase 1 is 77 rooms, Spa, 4 restaurants), then they would have access to an additional 140 acres, within but no later than 36 months." He continued "They will have a beautification project for Barbuda, where they are in process now of creating a donkey sanitary, and refurbishment of the Government house to be used as a museum. Paradise Found also offered to have a Sustainable Development Plan done for Barbuda at their cost."

A main resort with 50 villas and cottages is planned, each with a private pool. The resorts master building will be no taller than three stories high, with six future planned overwater villas allowed on Eco-Lodge land using LEED eco-friendly technology.

ISLAND PHILANTHROPY
A special philanthropy agreement will create a beautification project for the island including reducing visual pollution and removing condemned buildings. Also, a medical building and clinic for residents as well as 500 homes will be offered to low income families.
All Barbudans are home owners without loans or mortgages, self-employed in their own businesses shipping lobster or fishing and we are no exception."

Regardless of groups protesting, the government after many concessions is finally reaching an agreement with Paradise and development will proceed as planned beginning in 2017. The planned resort on the island of Barbuda is “very much on track,” states Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Minister Asot Michael.

Honestly, I always wondered what that really means when people say it. Seriously.

How the fuck "thinking of people in dire straits" help them?

And prayers... you pray once, twice, every day, when you remember, when?

It's either you donate money or your time and efforts... otherwise "thoughts and prayers" are really a simple cop-out.
