T&T cricketer and Guyana Amazon Warriors captain Rayad Emrit was on the cricket field in Kabul, when the suicide bomber blew himself up outside the ground in Afghanistan yesterday.

Emrit is the only West Indian cricketer taking part in the Afghanistan T20 league called the Shpageeza. He is playing for the Boost Defenders and was on the field when the action occurred. Speaking to Guardian Media Sports the former T&T captain said: “We were in the field bowling when the situation occurred. It was the second over of the innings and we heard a loud explosion go off on the outside. I felt the stadium shake, such was the force of this explosion. When I looked outside I saw a tall building shaking and broken glass all over. The entire area of the building was in smoke. We were told by officials that it was a gas cylinder that went off.”

Pakistan and Afghanistan are very different both in terms of the level of safety and the ability of the authorities to provide security. I understand the guys going to Pakistan--it is for a very limited number of games that are being organized at the highest level. But Afghanistan?

Is he that strapped for cash that he is willing to put his life at risk for a payday? No amount of security guarantees can compensate for going to volatile areas like Afghanistan and Pakistan.

i can tell you first hand that if you have certain things to take care of you have no choice but to take risks...and i mean legitimate things to take care of

Is Afghanistan any more dangerous than Caribbean countries or Lain American countries? We have some of the highest murder rates in the world. Yes thee are terrorists, but there are also security to protect you.

Dey ain go see dat post..but I believe a lot of goodwill was involved in Emrit's decision also..of course he would've gotten a stipend,but this wasn't about no cash reward,this was more than that..how much friggin Afghan league paying anyway?


Emrit is a T&T and WI ambassador and I'm very proud of him for supporting the real people of Afghanistan and that region.

We've heard about 'mercenaries' but Emrit is a true soldier here..

Exactly, the stupidity on this MB never ceases to amaze me! How the fack can you compare Barbados to Afghanistan that is considered one of the highest risk countries in the world by almost every foreign embassy in the world? It is war ravaged and is the top breeding ground for terrorist activity next to Pakistan. Take a visit and see for yourself you bunch of numbskulls (and hopefully you make it out alive and hopefully other countries won't then look at your passport and wonder what you been doing there in the first place!).

Would he necessarily have been 100% safer on the Tube.London Bridge or Paris on the wrong day?

even if a person is your brother, you should always try to have an honest discussion.

Describing Emmrit action as a goodwill ambassador is your way of defending the young man, for going to Afghan.if Afghanistan was not at war, the story would be different.

By the way, Emrit played for my home team Maple with Kemar a couple years ago.
