HEADLINE: Qualifier not an embarrassing route, argues Holder

CaribbeanCricket.com 2017-09-15 06:36:55

BELFAST, Ireland (CMC) — Captain Jason Holder does not believe West Indies having to play in a qualifying tournament to reach the 2019 World Cup in England is an embarrassment for the Caribbean side.

Hosts England and the remaining top seven teams in the ICC rankings at the September 30 cut-off date will earn direct qualification to the showpiece.

But with the Windies languishing ninth, they face the increasing likelihood of having to contest a 10-nation qualifier — comprising ICC associate nations like the Netherlands and Scotland — in order to secure one of the last two World Cup spots.

“I don't think it is embarrassing,” Holder said following Wednesday's rained off One-Day International against Ireland.

“The World Cup is of such that teams like Ireland have come into world events and done really well and beat big teams before, as well as other smaller teams, so I don't think it's embarrassing.

It might not be an embarrassment for captain Holder and his Caribbean side but as a west Indian I am very, very, very embarrassed because we have always enjoyed direct qualification.

Looks like its that quality of having no shame that has made him captain for life.

Holder has the worst ODI win loss ratio of any WI captain..in history..yet he refuses to resign..and ..won't be fired.

This culture has accepted and is ok with the current status quo of being perennial losers, of course he isn't embarrassed. But we are

I think the high class cut and thrust of debate and the resulting exhausting intellectual exertion aside, the most important question is, wtf kinda name is sandisha?

What good would it do for the players and management to feel embarrassed?

They have a job to do and right now it's make it to the tournament.

Be embarrassed if you fail to qualify.

It's insulting not just to the Windies but also Zimbabwe and the Associates to even ask that kind of question.

Only in international cricket does this kind of nonsense even exist.

analyst-kid 2017-09-15 09:50:43

Right now Argentina in danger of not qualifying in COMMEBOL for World Cup 2018....they may have to rely on the playoffs with the Oceania team if they should place fifth...but with Columbia, Chile,Peru and Argentina literally fighting for two qualifying spots and a third playoff spot...it aint easy for Argentina.

Netherlands (Holland) in Europe also in danger of not qualifying out of their group and are in the same boat as Argentina.

These things happens...if you are good..you will qualify even by the playoff route.

It is not an embarrassment for him. He's not even an automatic pick in the starting eleven in my opinion.

if Jason is not an automatic pick, who is?

with the upcoming inclusions of Gayle Samuels and eventually Darren Bravo the ODI team becomes very competitive....fortunes for WI should change.

natty_forever 2017-09-15 11:28:32

In reply to analyst-kid... no it should not, we have not been a good ODI team for some time now.

Of course we realize it. The rankings are what they are.

But the ICC, which included the WI, agreed to the qualifying parameters. WICB did not object to a ten team tournament or top 7 ranked teams and England getting automatic invites.

It is what it is. So up to the team to get through the qualifiers (I understand they'll be played in Zimbabwe now) and get to the World Cup. Feeling ashamed helps nobody (well maybe it gets the other teams excited at the chance to inflict real misery on the team).

Time for the squad to get to work.

big grin

In reply to Leman

it took ten years to get to the bottom, why should he embarrassed,

if he is not embarrassed, it would be like the team is entitled to a berth without meeting the minimum standards.

analyst-kid 2017-09-15 11:36:16

I am quietly confident we will do much better.

natty_forever 2017-09-15 12:02:57

In reply to analyst-kid... well against tier 2 anything but a topping of the table, will not suffice.

The rankings are based on the last 36 matches played by the Windies. Matches played since the World cup in early 2015. Jason Holder has been the captain since India in 2014.
In 2014 with the full team the record was 7 wins from 13 matches 54% win percentage.
Since Jan 2015 they played 43 matches and has won only 11 or 26%.

DO NOT SAY THAT WE WERE AT SAME RANKING WITH THE OLD GUARD IT IS UNTRUE.

THE CURRENT RANKING MUST BE PLACED AT THE FEET OF WAVEL AND DAVE. AMNESTY TO SAVE THEIR REPUTATIONS FOR DAMAGING THE PRODUCT

Jason Holder is a PREMIUM QUALITY TOP DRAWER BOOT LICKER, him only second to the LEGEND and THE GOD OF BOOT LICKERS, Floyd Reifer

“I don't think it is embarrassing,” Holder said

If Holder had said anything different he would have had to resign. He was the captain during the entire period under review and therefore commenting on his own stewardship.

What was the rank before Jason told over as captain, no 1, 2 ,3,4 ,5 6 or 7 ,

What's embarrassing if you fail to qualify? You tried atleast..

Tryangle 2017-09-15 15:00:18

In reply to Khaga

Being the prohibitive favourite, and failing to qualify, could be seen as an embarrassment. So if the Windies fail to reach the WC then I can see why it would be seen that way.

If it was Sri Lanka in this predicament, then I'd expect the discussion forums there to have a similar tone.

In reply to natty_forever

.... that's like Federer playing qualifiers.

lol

although it's funny also to think that Windies are similar to R-Fed right now. Maybe 1997-era Agassi?

natty_forever 2017-09-15 15:01:45

In reply to Tryangle... not similar, just thinking the great Fed playing in qualifiers for a grand slam. Unimaginable!

I did not say that Jason was responsible. I blame the administration. Jason Holder period as captain is just a coincidence as it occurred after India and is the start of the free fall in rankings.

The ppl at Wiki puts it this way.

Cricket after ICC World Cup 2015[edit]
West Indies would not play a One Day International after World Cup 2015 until after 30 September, which caused them to be eliminated from the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. A scheduled Triangular series with Zimbabwe and Pakistan was cancelled after the Pakistan Cricket Board refused to risk their hard-earned spot in the same competition. West Indies' first game after World Cup was against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka whitewashed West Indies in both Test and ODI series as 2–0 and 3–0 respectively, which cause them to fall down the rankings.

Neither here nor there

He would be criticized if he said he was embarrassed

He's criticized when he says he's not embarrassed

At the end of the day, we have to qualify. The focus should be on ensuring qualification. Not whether you embarrassed or not
