A one-off T20 against West Indies in Durham in September... why exactly?

On a chilly Durham afternoon, the West Indies were certainly wrapping up warm this afternoon as they prepared for tomorrow's Twenty20 international against England. The last tickets were sold earlier this week, and a capacity crowd of 17,000 will brave the cold to watch a fixture that is crucial to both teams as they prepare for… well, what exactly?

England (probable): AD Hales, JJ Roy, JE Root, EJG Morgan (c), DJ Malan, JC Buttler (w), LE Plunkett, DJ Willey, CJ Jordan, TK Curran, AU Rashid.

West Indies (probable): CH Gayle, E Lewis, CAK Walton (w), MN Samuels, KA Pollard, R Powell, CR Brathwaite (c), AR Nurse, SP Narine, JE Taylor, KOK Williams.

England leave home fans cold by resting Ben Stokes for West Indies T20

The latest perceived slight for the one-off evening Twenty20 match to be played against West Indies on Saturday night – temperatures are expected to peak at 13C at around 6.30pm and decline steadily from there – is the omission of the local hero, Ben Stokes. It has been deemed by the selectors that their most precious asset urgently needed a rest and could not be risked in 40 overs of cricket five miles up the road from his home.

When WI played against England in May a few years ago it was deemed (by some posters on here) to be too early in the season. I suppose mid-September is too late?

Ranking will determine who get to play during "prime time"

Australia - no more boxing day test
New Zealand - rather play one day match during lucrative Christmas period.

Notice any trends.
