Great article, great analysis and well written. Only blemish is the claim that the :"Caribbean (economy) was devastated by the fall of Stanford.

...Only surprised though that all the bigger more established Test playing countries already had the tech and the databases and you mean to tell me they didn't use them effectively at 2 world cups??!

That is why Phil and Co were so eager to ram down 'No brains' down Nicolas et al throats! lol

True.

When T20 was first gaining prominence, I was really struck by how innovative Daren Ganga and Trinidad was in their creativity and innovation.

I recall Ganga playing in a few matches in Staten Island after the league flew him straight from LA.

In those days, T-20 was still in infancy but you could see Ganga knew this format was special.

All the innovations-opening with a spinner, crazy hitting at the death, massive risk taking at the front end of the innings, festive ground atmosphere, cheerleaders, on field player interview, on field commentary were WI innovations that the IPL adopted.

POINT 2017-09-16 17:41:03

I beg to differ , because Ganga's
contribution , Pales in Significance
when compared the The Former Great
Players who were the Architects in
making Our Players in this Format of the game , the Best in the World .

First of all Those Players were in control of this format of the game Regionally .

Secondly , they had a Camp , that lasted , I believe a Month . At that
Camp , Coaches in all aspects of the game were in attendance to Harness &
Hone the Talents of Our Players .

They made sure that Our Players warm up matches were played . I do not recall reading or hearing that Ganga was at any of those Camps .

Most of the Players that Ganga had to
deal with had already been harnessed
& honed by the Former Great Players
who were Regionally in control of the
Shortest Version of the game .

I find it very despicable that Many
in this Forum bluntly refuse to acknowledge the Contributions these
Former Great Players made to make Our
Players very Competitive in this Format of the Game .

It was not Ganga who made Our Players
win 2 consecutive World Cups in this
Format of the game . It was Our Former Great Players who did that .

I've been saying this all along, this is ours,we are miles ahead of others, embrace it..

In our wildest dreams we wouldn't have been hearing about Santokie,Badree etc, such talented men now given an opportunity to play among the best in the world rather than languish in the shadow of false promises of WICB awaiting a stipend.

T20 is the future and the future is now...very soon it will be 5 T20's in a series and one or two of the other formats..

Headley 2017-09-16 19:17:49

From 2012 to the end of 2016, the seven players with the most T20 appearances in the world were all West Indian - each with at least 188 T20 appearances in this time.

The stark fact is that Ganga was only following the Template that the Former
Great Players in West Indies Cricket made for their Players .

BTW , as a Player Ganga can never ever be described as being a Great Player in West Indies Cricket . Does
anyone in this Forum care to dispute
this Freaking Fact ?????

You completely miss the point, POINT. The article is simply acknowledging Ganga's tactical leadership. Notwithstanding the fact that his own style of play was unsuitable for 20-20, he led the T&T team successfully, making T&T an early force in the game, and oversaw the development of a team that included Badree, D J Bravo, Pollard, Narine, all of whom became significant contributers and innovators to the game worldwide, as well as Ramdin, Rampaul, Cooper and DM Bravo.

The dude is unaware that T&T represented the region 2-3 times, at the tournament after the IPL season.
Ganga was one of the best regional captains, in every format.

POINT 2017-09-18 14:56:17

I dislike belabouring the fact that
ALL Our Players in the shortest version of the game were not harnessed
& Honed by Ganga , he & Trinidad & Tobago were merely the beneficiaries
of the Skills of the Players including those from T & T who were
Harnessed & Honed by the Former Great Players who were in charge of the
Shortest version of the Game Regionally .

Give Jack his jacket POINT.

All teams benefitted from the greats yes...but TNT was at the forefront, and a lot of that had to do with their brain trust, whether it was Ganga who decided to open with Badree, as well as to swing for the fences when batting..i dont know, but as the skipper, and according to the writer who researched (we hope) credit must go to Ganga

The Headline of this Post is this :

" GANGA -THE ORIGINAL T20 THINKER "

I invite You & others to look up the
word Original in a Dictionary .Now
if Ganga was a member of those who
were in charge of the 20/20 version
of the Game Regionally , I would accept the heading of this Post .

The stark fact however is that he was
not . It is that freaking Simple . BTW I have no hatred or malice towards Ganga .

Now if when Columbus came to the " New World "and there were no people living in the "New World" it could rightly be stated that he did indeed
Discover the New World .

The fact is however he met people in
the so called " New World ". Those
in charge of 20/20 Cricket in the Region set the template for Ganga et al to follow .

My recollection is that the match vs
England happened before Trinidad won
the Regional Tournaments in this version of the game .

I am not implying or saying that Ganga has not made a worthy Contribution to T & T cricket in its Team being dominant in this version of the game . HE has done that .

My take is the use of the words ORIGINAL 20/20 thinker , is not accurate regarding Regional 20/20
Cricket .

Name another captain that did what he did so early on with a unknown team?

In 2008 English media wrote off T&T, Ganga's tactics then...

Lost to England by what 1 run?
Beat Middlesex by 5 wickets
Sherwin Ganga took (6 wickets) Denesh Ramdin top scored with (41)

Again in 2009 media wrote off T&T. Didn't give the team a chance vs IPL teams
Say what you want Ganga's tactics had a lot to do with leading his team to the final. Yes everyone remembers Pollard but...

T&T beat

Somerset
Deccan chargers
New south wales
Diamond eagles

In semi's vs Cape cobras he used Lendl Simmons who got two crucial wickets.

Remind me again how other WI teams performed at champions league?
Did any other WI T20 champions win a game in this tournament? It ran for 4 more years after those results.

It took West Indies 3 world cups & 4 years later to become champions.

For those claiming we only won cause of likes of Chris Gayle lets not forget

Semi final Badree 2-27 Rampaul 3-16 Narine 2-17
Final Narine 3-9
Ramdin's outstanding wicketkeeping in both those matches.

But I guess Ganga's tactics was nothing
lol

Windies just knew how to use Pollard who after 2007 WC was written off in WI, Narine a windball bowler or even Badree.
lol lol lol lol

Haters will be haters
cool
