Heading north of us in Bim, but the outer bands, heavy with moisture will continue to bring rains (heavy rains) well through the night. The occasional winds >50mph too.

Thankful it was not a direct hit.

MARIA CONTINUING TO STRENGTHEN AS IT APPROACHES THE LESSER ANTILLES

Cat3 now

pelon 2017-09-18 12:04:55

In reply to Chrissy

Serious threat to the island. (was near Cat 2 at 6am when I checked... smile and posted... )

the only good news is that the system is very compact:

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles
(205 km).

But with a direct hit, that is irrelevant.

Significant threat with flooding and mudslides pending in Dominica.

In reply to pelon

Just saw that the last time there were twin major hurricanes in the Leewards was 1899

DirtyDan 2017-09-18 13:39:43

What's the estimated time if landfall in dca?

pelon 2017-09-18 13:42:34

In reply to DirtyDan

expect from 3pm onward for the weather to deteriorate significantly. By 10pm... the system should be just over Dominica

This NHC image helps but the RADAR out of Martinique is the best real-time source available to Dominica. RADAR LINK

it is remotely possible that Maria *could* pass between Dominica and Martinique, and because the hurricane winds only extend 15-30 miles... you may not get a direct hit... but the RAINS will do significant damage to the island.

Runs 2017-09-18 13:55:34

Maria could become a devastating Cat 5 hurricane on its way toward St. Croix and Puerto Rico.

DirtyDan 2017-09-18 14:01:25

Thanks Pelon and Chrissy for news and updates

DirtyDan 2017-09-18 14:04:22

...THE EYE AND THE INTENSE INNER CORE IS EXPECTED TO PASS NEAR
DOMINICA DURING THE NEXT FEW HOURS...

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 130 mph (215 km/h)
with higher gusts. Maria is an extremely dangerous category 4

strengthening is forecast during the next 24 to 36 hours, and Maria
is expected to be an extremely dangerous major hurricane during the
next couple of days.

Can you believe the speed of the intensity bro - less than 12 hours.

I hope folks are prepared for this madness? How does this region recover from this?

Unbelievable. On Saturday at 11am was the first official NHC "tropical storm warning"... from then to now at 130 mph... stores closed sunday, I can only hope folk prepared as u stated.

It will be frightening losses if a direct hit.

This thing just sat over us for a long time. Lots of water. Plenty of flooding in low lying areas and the outer bands continue to pound us incessantly even as I type.

It could have been worse.

Official damage report by mid day tomorrow.

........................

Barbados experienced islandwide blackout this afternoon due to lightening strike of their power grid and equipment.

The eye of the storm just touched down on Dominica's back.

May nature spare the Nature Isle.

Schools in Saint Lucia will remain closed tomorrow as the Met office has predicted more rains from feeder bands.

Also, there will be a delayed opening of the commercial sector for sometime around mid morning.

Chrissy 2017-09-18 19:43:57

From Weather Underground:
[7:33pm] Recon finds an estimated pressure of 926mb and surface winds of 160 mph in #Maria's northwestern eyewall.

pelon 2017-09-18 19:45:24

Chrissy: Listening to the radio in Dominica, and the request to god to "divert the storm" rather than give actual advice and information on the coordinates... a bit overbearing.

Every caller is a 10 minute prayer.... and no details about pre and post storm readiness/survival.

Anyhow, as Courtesy says: the eye has just touched... and radar from Martinique confirms.

The intensity is starting to peak, I am continuing to listening via: 93.1 RADIO DOMINICA which has backup power.

Walco 2017-09-18 21:12:26

Jeezas man! You can hear that familiar rumbling in the background whenever the music stops and the announcer comes back on air. Hurricanes have a unique voice. The fear in the announcer's voice is palpable.

Stay safe Brother Commie and family.

I wish they would stop playing music. If the announcers are too scared or distracted to talk, just let the listeners hear the hurricane roaring outside. The music conveys no information whatsoever about what's going on in Dominica.

The eye is over Dominica and the PM posted that he was rescued..

Walco 2017-09-18 22:11:43

In reply to Chrissy

I guess, but that is very dangerous for the rescuers and the rescued in Cat 5 winds with objects flying through the air. That's why I said the eye must have gone over Dominica. I heard a radio interview of an American who was in St Martin during Irma. This guy said Irma picked up a stove and hurled it through the wall of his hotel room.

'Dominica’s Prime Minister has said Hurricane Maria has stripped the island of “all what money can buy”. The Category 5 storm slammed into the small Caribbean island overnight. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit captured the terrifying power of Hurricane Maria in a series of Facebook posts, writing that he was “at the complete mercy” of the storm. After being rescued, he said: “We will need help, my friend, we will need help of all kinds.” He added: “Initial reports are of widespread devastation. So far we have lost all what money can buy and replace. So, far the winds have swept away the roofs of almost every person I have spoken to or otherwise made contact with. The roof to my own official residence was among the first to go and this apparently triggered an avalanche of torn away roofs in the city and the countryside. My greatest fear for the morning is that we will wake to news of serious physical injury and possible deaths as a result of likely landslides triggered by persistent rains.” Maria’s sustained wind speeds reached 160mph, with higher gusts, on Monday night.'

I hope lives were spared

Jabari18 2017-09-19 05:41:55

The outskirts of Maria is absolutely terrifying. We in Trinidad barely got a taste. I cannot begin to imagine what those in Dominica and others throughout the Caribbean experienced and will experience over the coming days. cry cry cry cry

He added that these guys would have to take care of immediate family needs before trying to set up radio equipment. He also mentioned something about
digital images at lower frequencies.

Its astonishing but there seems to be virtually no communication between Dominica and the rest of the world. What ever happened to Sat phones ?
Years ago, it was common practice for Cable & Wireless to use mini earth stations for situations such as these. Its remarkable that with advance in technology
that for 12 hours there has been a virtual communications black out.

The Government of Saint Lucia has moved swiftly to allow the country to be used as an operational base for the humanitarian efforts, as coordinated arrangements continue on that island in an urgent effort to assist hurricane ravaged Dominica. Acting Prime Minister Lenard Montoute said because Dominica's airports are not operational; neither are the sea ports, his government has spared no effort in making this a reality.

The Ag PM said reconnaissance flights will have to be made to ascertain the actual situation on the ground and for immediate preparation to be made for the landing of helicopters and other craft.

The Saint Lucian Government has agreed in conjunction with the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Port Authority to waive any fees and to facilitate the use of warehouse facilities for the receipt and distribution of relief supplies and equipment.

Saint Lucia is also coordinating with the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Secretariat, the Venezuelan and French authorities with the response efforts.

The Cabinet of Ministers met Tuesday morning for the sole purpose of discussing the preliminary situation in Dominica following the passage of Hurricane Maria on Monday September 19th and Saint Lucia’s immediate response to provide relief.

The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) is deploying a contingent to assist the Commonwealth of Dominica in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

Captain Moore added that Barbadians could also provide support to Dominicans by donating bottle water, medical/first aid supplies, canned foods, baby items and general hygiene products to the BDF at St Ann’s Fort, The Garrison, or the Barbados Coast Guard at HMBS Pelican, Spring Garden. These items will be taken when the Coast Guard vessel sets sail with BDF and Barbados Fire Service contingents.

Thanks for all the Information , You have really been helpful in helping us
know the Dire situation that Dominica
is in .

In the BVI there are many persons who come from SVG . The Government in SVG
and the General Public collected a
Lot of Stuff to go to the BVI .

Unfortunately the Boat had to turn back to Kingstown because of Hurricane Maria .

The tragedy is compounded by the fact
that the current American Government
does not believe in Global Warming .
As far as I am aware , it is only in
the major Cities in America & in Canada where people from the Caribbean have sizeable Caribbean populations , are there currently activities to raise Funds & and Foodstuff for the Region .

In New York there are over 25 different Vincentian Organizations .
That however includes , Cricket Clubs ; Football Clubs ; Netball Clubs , and Philanthropic Organizations . They are all very active .

I believe that may also be the case
in other Islands . Time will tell if
the American Government helps , since
it is more than likely to focus on Puerto Rico and the American Virgin Islands .

I know that in the OECS Countries they generally assist each other . Prior to the advent of the Treaty of Chaguaramas , the OECS Countries had freedom of movement granted to enter in their Countries if your passport was from an OECS Country ..

CDEMA aerial footage can be found here

"The mountainous and volcanic terrain of Dominica will provide a challenge for the relief effort, according Chris Austin, head of the UK Taskforce on hurricanes Irma and Maria. The UK is currently trying to get an assessment team on Dominica after initial reports of widespread devastation and some fatalities."

"It’s difficult to determine the level of fatalities but so far seven are confirmed, as a direct result of the hurricane. That figure, the Prime Minister fears, will rise as he wades his way into the rural communities today, Wednesday."

Antigua Observer

"There are unconfirmed reports of six deaths in Dominica following the passage of Hurricane Maria. This is according to executive director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, CDEMA, Ronald Jackson. OBSERVER media spoke to Jackson moments ago. He says information on the casualties and the devastation has been slow in coming in."

Curtis 2017-09-20 07:07:15

ABSOLUTELY LEGIT REPORT - Hi All!! This is Hartley Henry - Principal Advisor to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica. It's 4 30am and I Just Spoke with Prime Minister Skerrit via Satellite phone. He and family are fine. Dominica is not!! Tremendous loss of Housing and Public buildings. The main general hospital took a beating. Patient care has been compromised. Many buildings serving as shelters lost roofs, which means that a very urgent need now is tarpaulins and other roofing materials. Little contact has been made with the outer communities but persons who walked 10 and 15 miles towards the city of Roseau from various outer districts report total destruction of homes, some roadways and crops. Urgent helicopter services are needed to take food, water and tarpaulins to outer districts for shelter. Canefield airport can accommodate helicopter landings and it is expected that from today, the waters around the main Roseau port will be calm enough to accommodate vessels bringing relief supplies and other forms of assistance. It's difficult to determine the level of fatalities but so far seven are confirmed, as a direct result of the hurricane. That figure, the Prime Minister fears, will rise as he wades his way into the rural communities today -Wednesday. The urgent needs now are roofing materials for shelters, bedding supplies for hundreds stranded in or outside what's left of their homes and food and water drops for residents of outlying districts inaccessible at the moment. The tarmac at Mellville Hall was not too badly damaged so the strip should be opened in a day or two for larger relief planes to land. The Prime Minister is hoping to make contact with ABS Radio in Antigua this morning to speak directly to the outer world as to the state of Dominica and its urgent needs. The country is in a daze - no electricity, no running water -as a result of uprooted pipes in most communities and definitely no landline or cellphone services on island, and that will be for quite a while. In summary, the island has been devastated. The housing stock significantly damaged or destroyed. All available public buildings are being used as shelters; with very limited roofing materials evident. The country needs the support and continued help and prayers of all. Will update further as new information is received. HHH

This way people got out of the way saving lives.

I never had reason to think about it but it's a good idea. I do not doubt Chrissy. I will get details from my bro who is a part of the CEDEMA disaster management team in a Caribbean country.

The deaths appear to be in double figures.
sad
CDEMA helped Antigua to completely evacuate Barbuda. Chrissy can correct me if I am wrong.

The European colonial masters seem to have no evacuation procedures in place for their colonies in the event of a hurricane.

When Caribbean governments screw up they get a cussing. And they deserve it. But during this hurricane season they seem to be better prepared than the European them. Credit where credit is due.

You are correct. CDEMA has been on the ball. It's not perfect but it's way ahead of the colonials. Note that the video of Dominica's destruction seen across the globe was from CDEMA. Just like Barbuda they got there first.

I read what Chrissy posted

What I noticed in Canada

If Bad weather is suspected this emergency system run by Environment Canada

kicks in on all radio stations in that area that may be affected.

Residents then call into radio stations to give the latest reports.

Areas to be affected are asked to seek shelter until the emergency is lifted.

In small islands, CARICOM should have designated services that pelon gave.
Now people can tune in with a battery power radio and be given info .

I tuned in to radio stations and all I got was gospel music. Then they were
off the air.

This is horrible service by Caricom and Governments.

The Canada Caribbean Disaster Risk Management Fund (CCDRMF) is one component of Global Affairs Canada’s (GAC), previously the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD), larger regional Caribbean Disaster Risk Management Program. The CCDRMF is a competitive fund which is designed to support community-driven projects that seek to enhance the resilience of communities and reduce risks from natural hazards (e.g. floods, droughts, tropical storms, hurricanes) and climate change.

I inquired today about this and will be given information by the Government of Canada.

My topic was setting up what you have on various islands in the Caribbean, prone to be
in the hurricane belt. Think how useful that would be if such could be funded on a permanent basis. We would have communication and information available.

I saw 50 amp generators that are selling cheaply to farmers by their Co-op.

The director told me that they would look at funding such
a project if a proposal is made.

National Public Alerting in Canada - Backgrounder

Federal/Provincial/Territorial (FPT) governments in Canada have been working toward a National Public Alerting System (NPAS) for many years. In 2007, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) issued a public notice that it would remove regulatory barriers to alert services and take a voluntary approach toward distribution of public alerts.

In June 2009, the CRTC approved an application made by Pelmorex Communications Inc., which included a commitment to broadcast emergency alerts at no cost to subscribers, and established a one year limit for launching the National Alert Aggregation and Dissemination (NAAD) System. FPT governments worked with Pelmorex and private sector broadcasters to address the actions required to make the system operational and on June 9, 2010, the NAAD System was officially launched.

This is an important safety system for Canadians. Governments continue to encourage broadcasters, cable and satellite companies to deliver relevant emergency alerts to their subscribers. As the system expands to include the participation of cell phone companies, social media web sites and other internet and multimedia distributors, even more Canadians will be alerted to emergencies that could affect their safety.

Just a little clarification. It was the Venezuelans who helped with the mass evacuation. They sent in a military plane which landed
on a private grass airstrip and then left with hundreds of folks. Others left via helicopter and boats.

I understand that the Venezuelans are again at the forefront of relief efforts for Dominica. I read somewhere that among other things they are providing a number of motor bikes to help with search and rescue and access to remote areas.

I see why Courtesy makes you look like an foolish.

August 28, 2011: Hurricane Irene crossed into Canada as an extratropical storm bringing heavy rain and strong winds to parts of Quebec and New Brunswick. Parts of New Brunswick received over 80mm of rain and wind gusts peaked at 93 km/h in Moncton.

September 16, 2011: Hurricane Maria made landfall near the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. Due to Maria's rapid forward speed (90+ km/h), rainfall totals were kept to a minimum and strong winds remained offshore, confined to the eastern semi-circle. As a result, little damage occurred.

Hurricanes do hit Canada the difference they are prepared.

We know your affinity toward Canada as you were one of the 'persecuted' of the 80's who sought refuge

You claim you provide facts I have been asking you to provide such?
Where is it.

You gats to be poorly Educated. Did you graduate from High School yet?

Google and see what Canadians have done for T&T you might become knowledgeable.

1866 Rev. Dr. John Morton, a young Presbyterian minister from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia arrives in Trinidad and is deeply concerned at the social conditions of the population of 25,000 Indians working on the plantations. Morton receives approval of the Maritime synod of the Presbyterian church to found a mission to Trinidad.

Canadian Mission elementary schools. The "C.M." schools, large one-room wooden constructions, are established in a large number of rural communities in Trinidad, and flourish, eventually numbering over seventy.

1898 Rev. Grant purchases "Oriental Hall", land and buildings adjacent to his home, which serves for years as a base of operations for the missionaries, and a home for the early Presbyterian College, Naparima Training College, and Naparima College.
1900 Naparima College is formally inaugurated, affiliated with Queen's Royal College in Port of Spain, and loosely modeled after Pictou Academy in Pictou, Nova Scotia. Enrollment is 50, staff complement 4.

Again you know so little

In terms of Canada’s trade relationship with Trinidad and Tobago, bilateral merchandise trade totalled $577.8 million in 2012. Merchandise exports to Trinidad and Tobago totalled $329.6 million and included mineral ores, machinery, paper and paperboard and copper and copper articles. Canada imported $248.2 million worth of merchandise from Trinidad and Tobago in 2012 which included organic chemicals, iron and steel.

Canadian investments are concentrated in the petrochemical, oil, gas and financial sectors. The official stock of Canadian direct investment stock in Trinidad and Tobago in 2012 was estimated at $893 million. A number of Canadian oil and gas companies have made significant investments in the sector between 2010 and 2012 and two Canadian companies are petrochemical world leaders with a long-established presence in T&T's Point Lisas Industrial Estate; between them producing methanol, ammonia and urea.

'At least 15 people have died on the Caribbean island of Dominica and many homes are destroyed beyond repair after Hurricane Maria devastated the country this week, Dominica's prime minister said Thursday. In an emotional interview with ABS Television, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said the death toll is likely to rise and search and rescue missions are ongoing. At least 16 others are missing in some communities, he said. “We have many deaths, but it is a miracle that we do not have hundreds of deaths in the country,” Skerrit told ABS Television. The storm has led to at least 26 deaths thus far, including 15 in Dominica, nine in Puerto Rico and two in Guadeloupe.'

Canadian organizations sending aid to victims of Hurricane Irma

Local volunteers came out Saturday morning to aid in the much-needed relief effort for victims of Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean.

The Category 5 hurricane smashed into the eastern Caribbean last week, flattening entire towns and leaving locals desperately in need of basic sustenance.

The team, which included crews from Global Medic and Air Canada, spent the morning packing and assembling 1,000 family emergency kits made up of 240 packets of water purifiers and hygiene items.

"These kits are so important because it's going to give those families about three months of aid," Rahul Singh, Global Medic's executive director told CBC Toronto.

At least 15 people are confirmed dead on Dominica, and dozens more remain missing.

imusic 2017-09-22 13:03:10

Woodman said the second hurricane that hit the British Virgin Islands further shook up the islands — leaving the place unrecognizable. The night, now, she said, is eerily silent because the frogs and crickets are no longer there.

“It just looks like a landfill, as if someone has just taken their hand and wiped it completely across the island, it’s brown and bare, it just looks dead,” she said. “It’s sad and heartbreaking.”

"Hurricane Maria is passing the Turks and Caicos Islands as it continues its destructive path across the Caribbean. The storm, now a category 3, is north-east of the island of Grand Turk with winds of 205km/h (125mph), the US National Hurricane Center says. Puerto Rico has completely lost power, and is being subjected to heavy rain and flooding, with possible mudslides. At least 13 people are said to have died there, bringing the death toll so far across the region to 33. Among that figure at least 15 lost their lives in Dominica, and 20 are still missing after the storm swept through on Monday. Two others perished on the French island of Guadeloupe, and three people were reported to have died in Haiti."

After the passing of IRMA , SVG Government decided to gather supplies etc to send to the BVI , there are many Vincentians living in the BVI .

The Aid was put on a Barge , and set out for the BVI ; unfortunately the Advent of MARIA , to the Region caused the Barge to turn back .

The Government of SVG , has stated that Students can come to SVG to continue their Studies . Those who lost Passports would be granted Free
Passports .

The residents of Dominica are beginning the grim task of picking up the pieces of their shattered lives after Hurricane Maria tore through the island, flattening buildings, destroying infrastructure and killing more than 20 people.

Many were still in a state of bewildered shock at the sheer savagery of the disaster – Dominica’s first category five storm in recorded history. The tiny fishing community of Scott’s Head, on the southwest coast, received its first supplies of drinking water and food four days after the storm when a private boat captained by a former villager arrived from Antigua.

Latest reports state 27 lives have been lost, with dozens more still missing. Heartbroken Ashton Thomas, 75, described the moment his wife of 52 years, Lucy, slipped from his grasp to her death as the couple tried to escape the gushing water.

“I was holding onto Lucy with one hand and the wall with the other. I managed to get her back once but she slipped away again. If I hadn’t let go, she would still be alive. I loved her so much,” he said.
