England (Playing XI):

42-over contest

Narper 2017-09-19 07:04:12

Toss delayed due to wet outfield

Narper 2017-09-19 08:05:29

12.40pm local: It's proper cold in Manchester, so it's not going to be straightforward to get this outfield dry. Looks like we'll be in for a longer delay than originally thought.

Lunch reduced to 15 minutes to compensate for the time lost.

Also, obviously, we'll start losing overs past the hour mark, which is 1.30pm local.

Narper 2017-09-19 08:18:24

1.15pm local: Okay, so there'll be another inspection at 2pm. This isn't looking good at all, and the crowd, understandably, aren't shying from expressing their displeasure.

Pacy 2017-09-19 08:35:59

Pathetic conditions at the T-20 and now in the first ODI. If this has happened in WI or Asia this would have been a huge issue by now.

In such cold conditions why would you play so many day night matches?

Cole 2017-09-19 08:44:04

Wrong time of the year to be playing cricket in England.

NewsJunkie 2017-09-19 09:10:24

In reply to Cole

Wrong time. Inadequate facilities. Stadium management holding rock concerts that allow thousands to walk all over the field just a short time agao. In short, ECB Mismanagement.

Woakes to Gayle, FOUR, shorter ball, again he's crunched through the leg side, not quite got hold of it but the ball flies past mid-on and races away - 4, 6, 4 and Woakes' tidy start has been rumpled
2.5
6
Woakes to Gayle, SIX, SMASHED! Into the crowd at wide long-on! Not the most sensible line of attack from Woakes, although he tried to push it across from wide on the crease... Gayle just sat back and went blammo, like it was a warm night in Bangalore!
2.4
4
Woakes to Gayle, FOUR, stand-and-deliver pummeling from Gayle, launched over mid-on! Length ball from Woakes, in the arc for Gayle to free his arms and, although it came high off the bat, still nearly went all the way
big grin

NewsJunkie 2017-09-19 10:18:15

I don't blame Gayle. He's old and fat anyway. Getting 37 from him is not a bad outcome.

I blame Evin Lewis even more. He gave it away on a rank boundary ball. Poor cricket sense from him.

WI in trouble here. You need your top order bats to last 10 overs and more at a run a ball.

The two openers are back in the dressing room under 10 overs...Advantage England.

These two Hope and Samuels have to carry WI at least to 30 overs ata good run rate.

Caribbean beaches are much nicer than those at the Algarve, and while the water in the Algarve is cold at this time of the year, the water in the Caribbean is warm all year round.

West Indies 100 comes up after 23 overs....

Shai out to Stokes for 35.

analyst-kid 2017-09-19 11:07:53

Samuels batting exceedingly slow tho ...scoring rate of 38.09...he has to stay there to do his customary acceleration otherwise....

Pitiful batting. Samuels has put WI in a bad state after batting for 17 overs and scoring 17 runs.

Hope again shows he is WI leading bat having bat 18 overs for 35 runs but both him and Samuels NEEDED to bat much faster...WI would have been 200/6 in 35-38 overs if Hope and Samuels had scored at normal ODI standards.

Starzz 2017-09-19 12:03:58

40.4
Willey to Devendra Bishoo, out Bowled!! Gets across and tries a scoop, only to see the bails fly. A comfortable angle for Willey - bowling from over the wicket - keeping it simple and straight. You miss, I hit.

Narper 2017-09-19 12:32:51

41.4
Stokes to Holder, no ball, FOUR, another no ball and another one for height. There's too much width this time for Holder to murder it over point
41.3
Stokes to Holder, FOUR, slower short ball, Holder slogs and gets a thick top-edge that goes flying to the third man fence

Narper 2017-09-19 12:34:06

41.5 Stokes to Jerome Taylor, out Caught by Buttler!! Slower ball, Taylor uses all his bottom hand power

I keep bemoaning the lack of allrounders in the WI ODI squad. Taylor,Bishoo and Williams really will have to bowl well to compensate for their lack of batting prowess.

I might be the last person to defend Samuels, batting or otherwise, but following the score updates on CricInfo, I noticed that for a great part of the partnership Hope had the lions share of the strike. Sure, Hope later pulled away with the scoring rate.

Root and Bairstow batting at a run a ball for more than 10 overs...as I said WI not ready for ODI cricket.....we must have top order bats batting at a run a ball CONSISTENTLY for more than 10 overs.

Only Capt Holder has done this in this match. Gayle need to stick around longer...his presence is pivotal.

Morgan: We came back really well. The West Indies started off really well and our bowlers executed exceptionally well with the slower balls. Joe Root doesn't drop many catches, obviously a difficult one that. Adil managed to bowl well and bowling unit in general have done well. Being there at the end and staying hungry, great way for him to begin the series.

Holder: Probably 30-40 runs short. Didn't bowl as well as we should have. Need to rotate the strike more and that's been an area of concern for a while now for us. I felt we lost wickets at crucial stages and that didn't help the momentum. Just a bit too inconsistent. A lot of work to be done. Want to focus on this series first and come back strong for TrentBrdge in two days time.

Bairstow, Man of the Match:
That wasn't happening again (he got out on 99 during the Test series against South Africa this summer). Said Stokes at the half-way down..said not again, then he ran down and bobbed it for six and I thought here we go, he fancies it. Not a great time to slip, but delighted I got back to the third run(when runnig on 99). Seems a long time ago since I had made my debut in ODI cricket. There's been ups and downs along the way. When you get a chance, you gotta come in and take your chances, especially with the strength in our England side. We got a serious belief in the side and we feel we didn't necessarily do justice in the Champions Trophy and going forward to the World Cup and obviously this series, we need to rectify that. I'm a lot stiffer (in the fielding).

30.5 Nurse to Stokes, SIX, to long on

And Stokes the hero, while Samuels is the goat (for contributing a paltry 17 in 46 balls, count them).

To win these matches the batting has to produce 260-275 runs.

So, when the weather enters the picture before the game begins you should not bat but give yourself a better chance on the drying ground.

In any event, the batsmen must produce. They did not.

He was told he would now have to go through the qualifying stage for the WC....
So the poor chap says he wanted to focus on this series first....

He doesn't want to quit the cappoship...he holds onto it for dear life .....so let him go through this torture game after game....he should note what happened to Sammy

Holder has the potential to be a very good allrounder....he is not going to achieve this if he remains the cappo of a losing WI side

In reply to tops... not looking a head to what will be after the series. And even tho we now have to qualify, we still trying to win here!

Holder similar to Carlos Brathwaite for the white ball cricket. If you are not cappo you are unlikely to play. Want a better reason for hanging in there, it is his livelihood.

OK... the bit on focusing on this series and coming back in 2 days time was confusing me since I didn't hear the interview.
