The President of Guyana has stepped up to the plate in a most unique and creative aid plan for his fellow CARICOM citizens.
He is offering land and aid for victims to relocate to Guyana, and presumably citizenship.

We are going to have a green economy pillared by the pumping of some heavy crude
In reply to Chrissy
I was still in H.S. when my parents seriously considered an offer from the Guyana gov't to relocate there. Biggest talk was of snakes! You know Yardies and snakes, right? (We were into yam farming and livestock.) But I think the idea couldn't muster enough weight to overcome extant comfort. A cat-4/5 hurricane passing through likely would have made a difference though.
Good gesture from the Guyana gov't. Great opportunity to the industrious ones for a restart.

At times like this politics needs to be put aside. There is nothing to suggest his offer was not sincere and in fact I am impressed.
In reply to Emir
Its not the first time Guyana has offered land to people, we are severely underpopulated
In reply to steveo
True.
Guyana has so much potential but such a tiny population is detrimental to economic growth, it is why I believe the Presiden's offer is a win win for everyone.
If Guyana can attract a few hundred thousand new citizens over the next decade it will significantly help to move the country forward

The coastland, a narrow strip of land where the majority lives is overpopulated and the interior which is mostly dense rainforests are hardly inhabited and the native Amerindians claim large areas. Where exactly does he plan to place these people?
Jonestownlike communes?
Guyana does not have infrastructure at present to encourage any type of mass immigration.

Migration or immigration will help development as pioneers will open new frontiers.
Remember the United States of America and what european immigration did to the landscape .., and I am not referring to genocide of native population in this case but to the great development that followed over years
In reply to JayMor
LOL for the snakes.
Loads of Bajans moved to Guyana

Goodluck, they are living like crabs in a barrel on the coastland. The rainforest is harsh, dense jungle, plus the Amerindians will be hostile to foreigners on their reserved lands. They are presently fighting the govt for titles to these lands. It is a noble gesture but am just trying to keep it real.
The US had large fertile plains, etc with wonderful climate, completely different areas geographically. Go research Amazon rainforest, 3/4's of Guyana is such.
Will indeed take a special breed and am not sure how the climate changers will deal with the rainforest being cutdown.
Lethem and the Rupununi Savannas is best bet but even there are prone to flooding as we recently saw.
In reply to steveo
Bingo!
It's an old tried and true tactic used also by his godfather Burnham.
In reply to Emir
and I am not referring to genocide of native population
You are certainly hoping though..
In reply to Chrissy
What did I say? I am not against it.
It may be a political move, how do you know, are you Granger's conscience?
And what do you mean allyuh?
In reply to steveo
It does seem political as thousands of Guyanese do not own land and many are on waiting lists for house lots.
In reply to Runs
Sister Chrissy our resident seer has determined that its due to his undisputed goodness

Good point, I am living in a new housing scheme that is not fully electrified yet. I have electricity though. Been checked out by the new govt to see why I got too.

Peeps see 83k square miles and under 1m pop and make assumptions. Have to break it down for them and keep it real, many educated Guyanese are in this group also.
Maybe the plan is to convert the sugarcane fields into houselots? I noticed the rice industry once the backbone of the economy is being neglected. Looks as if we are banking on oil alone, contrary to advice from other nations that did not diversify such as our neighbor to the west. We love to learn lessons the hard way, it is a Guyanese thing.
In reply to steveo
Funny I just saw this

Bring back the Guyanese living in those hurricane islands. That's at least 50,000

I hear you. Keep in mind the American frontier was more harsh- sever winter and deep forest and today many cities have sprung.
Pioneers in a free society can make wonders.
I a talking of large numbers here.
