TECH experts: Best virus protection software??

Yamfoot 2017-09-24 15:16:11

My Kapersky is about to expire and I would like to look at lower cost option.

Your best recommendations please. Once in a while I watch movies using yesmovies.to

Apart from that, it is regular emails and web surfing.

"BEST" is subjective. For a very long time I have used AVAST, zero issues.

Newer: Very good

Malwarebytes
Also Very good: Bitdefender

What I use: AVAST
AVAST LINK

Avoid: McAfee, Norton

Elephant in the room: Kaspersky the Great

Summary: any of the three above are good options for your laptop.

If you were a tech geek, I would point you to the old school "Spyware Search & Destroy" app... but that is NOT user friendly.

Yamfoot 2017-09-24 16:43:38

In reply to pelon

I need user friendly fer sure! Brain has to be used on my work for clients.

Avast is free?
The tech guy at worked installed a trial of malwarebytes whrn I was locked out of my computer due to malware. I said to him "but I have Kapersky the Great....how could this happen?"
He poured cold water on Kapersky.

Man I am die hard Linux, but have MAC and Windows too. I knew my Yammy meant Windows - thus the recommendation.

McAfee and Norton are CPU burners and don't have the greatest malware protection

Buy an external hard drive and understand that everything laptop have a life as long as the warranty you buy! There are too many out there to mess you up with the advanced technology, I back up and delete, that a the way to go! cool

Little history for you all, the times I had malware etc on my computer was when I had Anti Virus, Scanners etc installed. One day I realised, is them same programs is what giving you the malware. I don't use any anti virus ever for the last 3 years or so.

Computer's been going better than ever. big grin big grin

I guess once you don't download any untrusted stuff and install them then you good.

smile It is a fact that some malware actually masquerade as legitimate antivirus and anti-spyware software - especially the non-mainstream stuff. Kaspersky is suspected of spying for the Russian government now, to make matters worse.

In the Windows world, Windows Defender or Security Essentials should be adequate for normal use - which does not include visiting shady sites to watch cricket.

If you want to visit risky sites, or are just paranoid about malware, use Linux if it will get the job done. There are adequate writing and graphics tools, compatible with MS Word and other MS stuff to a large degree. A Mac would be even better in this respect.

I use Microsoft's antivirus on Windows, but switch to Linux to get my cricket fix!

I use a mac these days, when I watch cricket from all kinda site, I just close all pop ups and download nothing. Matter ah fact, don't think yo can catch virus that way as mac requires your password to do any system changes for installation.

I would have recommended AVG but it is a real resource hog. Give Eset NOD32 a try. It has a 30 Day Free trial (No credit card required).

pelon 2017-09-26 11:50:23

When this is done, she with have 217 options.

My first sentence was: "BEST" is subjective.

Yamfoot 2017-09-27 09:25:37

In reply to pelon

There are only 216 options. Waiting on 1 more lol

Yamfoot 2017-10-18 23:50:57

Where is the one more?

My birthday is coming up on sunday Oct 22 and that is when it expires. I don't want to be exposed?

The malwarebytes thing keeps popping up on my computer. Maybe the more persistent one wins?

nick2020 2017-10-19 00:52:11

In reply to Yamfoot

Malwarebytes keeps popping up if you are using the premium trial version. Free version without opting in for the trial is reactive and not proactive.

What are you afraid of?

If you are into downloading bootleg software and such practices you are at high risk of catching something unwanted.
If you are the typical user you are at risk of someone hacking into your cloud accounts (think Yahoo) or some Zero Day exploit that chances are antivirus won't protect you from.

Keep regular backups of your important files (preferably on a device not always connected to your computer)
Sleep well.

Kaspersky expired today and I am about to download Avast. Do I have to uninstall Kapersky first?

sgtdjones 2017-10-23 21:04:25

I use free Avira with ABP ad blocker

They would not conflict since they won’t be running together – but since you won’t be using Kaspersky then deleting will free-up disk space.

Yamfoot 2017-10-23 21:13:08

I get a message saying that Windows Firewall is OFF and I should turn it on. Should i?

Yamfoot 2017-10-23 21:13:24

In reply to birdseye

Doing that now.

Yamfoot 2017-10-23 21:23:09

But Ahm....this free version does not block hacker attacks. I would have to pay US$19.00 per year for that. It also stops bothersom spam if I upgrade.

Yamfoot 2017-10-23 21:33:26

Thats is actually a huge discount
