LONDON, CMC – Opener Evin Lewis has been ruled out of Friday’s fifth One-Day International against England after picking up a hairline fracture of his ankle during his superb hundred in the fourth game here Wednesday.

The left-hander picked up the injury in the 47th over when he drove a full length delivery from pacer Jake Ball into his right ankle.

He immediately collapsed on the crease in obvious pain and had to be subsequently stretchered from the field.

Lewis made 176 – the fourth-highest score by a West Indies batsman in ODIs – as West Indies racked up 356 for five off their 50 overs after being sent in.

He slammed 17 fours and seven sixes to register his second career ODI hundred.

However, the Caribbean side went on to lose by six runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method, after rain ended the contest at the Oval with England on 258 for five in the 36th over.

Captain Jason Holder will also miss the final ODI at the Ageas Bowl as he returns to Barbados for the burial of his uncle.

In his absence, Jason Mohammed will lead the side with all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite expected to be called up as cover.

Sympathies to Holder and speedy recovery to Lewis who demonstrated to the world that he is a world class batsman and deserves to be on the test team as well. I would also use this opportunity to rest both Gayle and Samuel, while they long overdue batsman from the windward island by the name of Sunil Ambris, to show case his talent.

Samuels has rendered himself useless, but don't deprive Gayle the opportunity to make yet another dead-rubber ton.

While I give kudos to Holder for a very good game with both bat and ball, I will also slap him on his risk for losing yesterdays game after scoring 356. England won because they understood the DL while we clearly showed the that he did have a clue of how D/L works. We lost in the last 5 overs because he captained the game as if he expected to bowl all of his 50 overs, though it was clear the clouds were building and it was a matter of time for the rain came. Why he persisted with Nurse when he saw how the English spinners were handled by us? Why only 2 overs from R Powell? Why did he not bowl out Joseph to see if he wouldn't break the partnership?

Remember I used the word "Rest" and not drop. I just want to see Sunil Ambris because this guy has been overdue. He showed us his talent since when he played under 19 for WI and has an average on over 50 in list A games, but keeps being denied selection on the senior team
