Granger has decided that he has the right to choose Election's Commission chairman.
The laws were deliberately set in such a way (I think by Jimmy Carter etc) that the govt cannot dictate this sensitive position, that a collaboration is required by both sides to fill the position. The opposition would provide a list of qualified persons and the president would appoint from that list.
The president has so far rejected 2 lists of candidates, saying that the persons are unfit without providing any reasons WHY they are unfit.
Now that the third list is submitted he is making clear his intention to unilaterally appoint the chairman.
The future is looking dire in Guyana. The appetites are whetted by the promise of oil and morals, integrity are going out the window.
Dictatorship is back.

Guyana: The return of rigging
Guyanese need to get some backbone
In reply to steveo
Stalin said it ain't the people that vote that counts, it's the people who count the votes that count.....profound wisdom here

A certain poster here on this MB will be well pleased, suits him fine.

You will notice a certain doctor and a certain US govt worker no longer critical on Guyana govt activities...
Very instructive
If these learned individuals demonstrate such one-sidedness what can we expect from the common man.
Because these things are not called out by these same set of people, the cabal feels they have a free pass and will continue on this tangent without thinking twice
At least the PPP had people from their own circle that stood up and called a spade a spade.
I feel, its much more difficult to find a fair thinking individual, oil profits to be shared and all
In reply to ray
They have but they are crooked
In reply to steveo
I do not forget the accusations they tossed at me. A banas who left Guyana as a youth, and called a spade a spade.
Hola..I aint the doctor...but I do know this...the alternative is a bunch of thieves..yes thats the PPP..all of a sudden they are trustworthy...man all you give me a break...sad thing is they still garner support..so what that makes you??..A crook too..
Look PNC will theif and rig...they are in power and they can manipulate...but I do not want any of those PPP boys around for a long long time...they have no blasted shame....Granger let them off the hook..
Anyway we know the PNC will thief...but its their time now...PPP ..I cannot stand with anyone that steals...and they were good at it..

You cannot justify one over the other, Guyana needs to get young, honest, educated politicians. Fresh blood.

There is "thieving" and there is tyranny
While human nature will exhibit itself in all govts, a lot of "Thieving" sometimes is a perception fostered by malcontents
For example, who was fighting for land in "Pradoville" before the PPP boys bought it and built big houses on it? Thats an issue deeply rooted in jealousy.
To the issue
Tell me which time the PPP unilaterally appointed their own elections chairman?
In reply to Runs
That fella just demonstrated the mind of the people who voted for Granger.
Our fella, our thief.
In reply to steveo
Not him alone, I have heard many say the same thing. Sometimes I truly have to go wtf am I hearing.
In reply to steveo
Hola...Let me tell you about this fella...I am a nationalist..it dont matter who ruling...but it must be fair...we are in this mess because of CHEDDIE JAGAN...yes CHEDDIE JAGAN...
we are sitting around in Florida...Cheddie on the phone he is about to win election and become president...
He said there will be no retribution or vengeance taken....and we told him he was wrong...he should have had gone after the PNC for mismangement ,teefing.corruption, race riots etc...but the man said .."NOT UNDER HIS WATCH"".
Fast forward..the man dead and a bunch of yahoos hijack the party and its mandate...Janet J walked out of a minister's house after she saw what he claims his ministerial salary bought...the party was hijacked and the teefing was rampant.Janet could not had done nothing...she died and we know what happened..
PPP eventually lost and as nationalist it was my hope that Granger would had gone after those teefing buggers..but he has'nt...and the cycle will go on...
As a nationalist people need to get jail..throw away the keys and let them rot...you dont clean shit by merely throwing a carpet over it...the shit still remains...you got to clean the shit out...and Jagan and now Granger has not....NATIONALISM HAS FAILED...but you are a party card member..I doubt if you will understand that.

It takes 1 term to get corrupt and 2 to get absolutely corrupt. I am so disappointed in the PPP, but then again I realize that this isn't the party of Jagan anymore it's just a bunch of tiefing yahoos. The amount of tiefing Jagdeo and company put pon Guyana made Burnham look like a choir boy.
From here on things will get interesting since this Oil thing filling everybody eye and they all licking their collective lips. The PPP will have 1 chance and 1 chance only to win the next election. If this oil thing take off look for mass immigration from the various islands of the Caribbean to Guyana, and if that happens the PPP are finished.
In reply to Ninetenjack
Am sorry to say this but a lot of the population is the same. Dog eat dog mentality and do what it takes to get ahead. Morality and ethical behavior lacking on that mudflat.

Who do you think is better for the country?
In reply to steveo
Who do you think is better for the country?
Are you even suggesting that the present PPP might be good for Guyana?
In reply to doosra
What has the current govt achieved other than closing sugar factories and putting people out of work?
They have very let the most dangerous man in Guyana walk out of prison.
They have also scuttled the amaila falls project.
Not a rhetorical question, I would like to know.
But wait, you are employed by govt sectors no? at least u get wuk bai
In reply to steveo
How did the head of SWAT got carjacked n gun taken away from him?0
In reply to steveo
no i have been doing the one job i got from graduation and still on it to now....i do not need wuk
now that that is out of the way
i would like you to give us a balance of the achievements of the PPP over the past 23 years
balance = good + corrupt
we can roll from there if you care
let me start with one that you;ve asked..
Let's start with Sugar + Skeldon for the PPP 23 years
In reply to Runs
Do you remember the police they had tailing brassington, crashed his car and if I remember right killed someone during the operation
In reply to steveo
Yep
In reply to doosra
The root of the issue with skeldon factory is a lack of people having the technical knowledge and experience to operate a more modern factory
Whats your theory, the PPP's plan was to build a inoperable factory?
I shouldnt have to explain the sugar problem to you.
The PPP had the vision of laying fiber cable so Guyana can have a viable ICT sector, a whole lot of young people have employment at the various call centers because of those cables.
What about the stadium where you get to watch your cricket? I remember a lot of naysayers criticizing before that project. How is it now?
In reply to steveo
I am all open to listening to new views on the sugar factory story
it seems bizarre that that huge investment went the way it did
it was under the PPP
should there be some level of responsibility for it?
In reply to Runs
Competence and professionalism by the new govt
In reply to steveo
The oil business will make some people rich, corruption going tek over.
In reply to granite
Everybody should get rich off of the oil money.
In reply to steveo
Hola...you think this is lil boy's game...you had gold, diamond, bauxite, rice, sugar .....who geh rich????
Guyana will not see nothing from that oil....
Chinese will manouvere and take over the portlands...yes that same portland in Houston...who you think putting up cash????Lots of I O U;s going on...Chinese call in debt..no one can pay and they take over the whole equity position...you control the portland..you control the economy....Guyana not getting out of the dray cart business for a good while more.
This is big man bizniz...Guyana still playing marbles with awara seed.

It would be most unfortunate for Guyana if the new PNC returned to undemocratic practices, but I am confident that the majority would not tolerate that. The current Guyana population has gotten used to democracy, and there is now a very significant proportion of people of mixed (Black and Indian) race.
Supporting government thieving or rigging by any political party is the very backwardness that will keep Guyanese in the low regard that they are held by other countries - including the tiniest Caribbean countries with almost no natural resources.
We can choose to remain backward, or work to improve the lot of all Guyanese through fairness and mutual respect. PNC-style quasi-dictatorship or PPP-style unfettered looting of public resources should not be tolerated by any Guyanese.
Guyanese deserve a better lot, but they need to stand up and do it for themselves, without afro- or indo-centric politics.
