2nd Test - Zimbabwe v West Indies

Narper 2017-10-29 01:41:47

Stats and trivia

-The team winning the toss has won four of the last five Tests played at this ground.

-Zimbabwe won the toss 11 times in the first 12 Tests played at Queens, but have done so only four times in their 10 last games here.

-Devendra Bishoo needs two more scalps to reach 100 Test wickets.

-From the current team, Brendan Taylor is Zimbabwe's leading batsman at this ground, with 453 runs including a century and four fifties from the six Tests he has played here.

Narper 2017-10-29 01:44:51

Likely ZIMBABWE XI:
Hamilton Masakadza, Solomon Mire, Craig Ervine, Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams, Sikandar Raza, Malcolm Waller, Regis Chakabva (wk), Graeme Cremer (capt), Kyle Jarvis, Chris Mpofu.

Likely WI XI:
Kraigg Brathwaite, Kieran Powell, Kyle Hope, Shai Hope, Roston Chase, Jermaine Blackwood, Shane Dowrich (wk), Jason Holder (capt), Devendra Bishoo, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel.

Narper 2017-10-29 01:45:34

Did you know?

- Devendra Bishoo needs just two scalps to reach 100 Test wickets. This will be his 28th Test.

- Graeme Cremer is yet to win a Test as Zimbabwe captain in six attempts, but could use some help at the toss given that only one team has lost the toss at Queens Sports Club and won the match since Zimbabwe returned to Test cricket in 2011. Thus far Cremer has won three of six tosses.

- Zimbabwe have scored four hundreds in five Tests at this ground since their 2011 return to Tests. Tino Mawoyo, Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams and Craig Ervine are the four batsmen who scored them.

Narper 2017-10-29 01:46:15

"For us to get over the 300-mark chasing more than 400, there are not many times that teams have done that. So it was good for us to know that if we have to do that in the second Test, we're capable of getting a 300-plus score batting last," - Zimbabwe coach Heath Streak.

Zimbabwe win toss and opt to bat for the first 2days days

Team changes: While West Indies are unchanged, the hosts have made two changes. Peter Moor and Tendai Chisoro coming in for Sean Williams and Kyle Jarvis.

shivnotout 2017-10-29 04:21:47

out Caught by Dowrich!! Three in three for Roach. Against Mire. Lovely delivery from Roach, fuller and around the fourth-stump channel, made Mire play at that. Indecisive footwork, a tame poke and the outside edge is well held diving to his right by Dowrich. The early wicket has been provided by Roach. Mire c Dowrich b Roach 4(12) [4s-1]

zim 4-1

Zimbabwe have two changes. Jarvis and Williams out. Moor and Chisoro in.

Gabriel and Roach account for the early wickets of Mire and Ervine.

Roach gets Taylor for one...big wicket that.

Ok, I'll ask the question.

Why would Holder see it fit to use Blackwood as first change bowler here after the ZIMs were reeling at 3-down for spit?

This after Blackwood hadn't been given a single over in the current or the previous series (England).

Roston Chase to Moor, FOUR, even the rapid Blackwood can't stop that from crossing the ropes. The crowd love it. A low full-toss, Moor gets forward and drives with an open face, beats Blackwood who gave a spirited chase till the last moment and even slid to cut it off, all to no avail. Fifty for Moor and it has been a fine innings

Narper 2017-10-29 10:54:57

The big man got his 5th Test ton, only his second against the Windies. Windies, on the other hand, will rue that they let go of a good start.

Bishoo got some purchase but mostly it was slow turn for him. Roston Chase, though, has managed to extract pace and bounce. Zimbabwe will want to push things as much as they can from here.

Given how they ended the day after having their back against the wall, there is no reason to believe why they can't!

Play will start half an hour early for the next three days and 5 minutes before the scheduled start on the last day. !

Amazing move by Holder, after having Zim's back against the ropes, at 14 runs with three wickets down, he experiments with using Blackwood as the first change bowler. I guess he wants the match to last 5 days.

I am not getting this batting strategy by the West Indies. 13 runs off 9 overs. Surely they are creating extra pressure on themselves instead of trying to rotate te strike. I am not watching, but is the bowling that good?

They won the first test...safeguard this test and their objective will be met. No need for gay abandon. Just pad your batting averages.

yardman83 2017-10-30 08:27:54

In reply to Courtesy

So the plan is to play for a draw? You know what the result will be if they fail at that objective though? I think you can be positive without being reckless. The approach should probably be to bat once, but that would mean surpassing Zimbabwe's score. You know how our batting can be, so being positive should be the priority.

The plan simply is to not lose this test.

If the batsmen can get set then it helps the cause. Obviously they should not get stalled when they have played themselves in 'cause this does not serve them in good stead either.

Blunting the new ball should be the first order of business.

Cremer to Kraigg Brathwaite, out Caught by Masakadza!! That's a beautiful ball to get Kraigg Brathwaite. Bowls the sharp leg break that bounces, and Kraigg Brathwaite ends up fending it to the slip in place. Now, now, the replays suggest that Cremer might just have his foot on the line there. A slight pause but given in favour of the bowler, as it should be.

It is sad. I am not saying we should play reckless cricket but be positive. I would have felt better to lose a wicket if we were 150. That is about where we would have been if we were scoring at 3 and over or close to that. Zimbabwe's best bowlers are their spinners so i do not understand this taking the shine off the ball business people taking about. Your openers supposed to be two of your more technically sound batsmen. They negotiated the first say 20 overs. It was time to start looking for runs. Now, 49 overs and all it takes is a few early wickets tomorrow, which is not unlike the West Indies for the complexion of this match to change quickly. This has to be a joke. It is not like it is England or New Zealand where they are reliant on their fastmen, this approach does not make sense to me. The aim is to develop the team and the aim should be to win this test match and not draw it.

True. Is like ppl forget that WI still prone to collapses. All it takes is a couple quick wickets for our situation to change. Have to take advantage when the conditions are good. Raza to Roston Chase, out Lbw!! Out of no where, something struck Roston Chase and he decided to deploy the reverse sweep against Raza's turn. Could not get his bat on it and was thudded around the knee-roll. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena took longer than ever but ruled in the bowler's favour.

Roston Chase lbw b Raza 32(45) [4s-3 6s-1]

Raza to Blackwood, out Caught by Cremer!! Raza is bowling like a dream. It's the sharp turn which has got him a wicket here. Turned sharply into Blackwood, who got the length right but the turn was too vicious to negotiate. He did all he could by trying to tuck with the turn, could not keep it down as there was some extra bounce and ended up hitting it flat towards short mid-wicket.

In reply to Larr Pullo

It's unreasonable to expect Bishoo to do everything, when the selectors pick three pacers in Roach, Gabriel and Holder on a spinning wicket.
cool
Cremer bowled well in the first Test, like Bishoo. But Cremer didn't dominate the wicket-taking column this time, similar to Bishoo in the first innings.

Holder should've batted at seven in this Test, and a left-arm spinner included, to give the side balance.

Hopefully, scoreboard pressure will work its magic on the Zimbabwe batsmen. If it doesn't, then we can look to the absence of a left-arm spinner to support Bishoo as the missing link. The selectors seem to be unable to prepare for all possibilities, and these days they should expect spinning pitches.

Bishoo to Chakabva, 1 run, induces the edge, and dropped! Full on off, and straightens after pitching, takes a thick outside edge off the bat, and hits the keeper's gloves, falls just where first slip was standing, but the fielder at slip had moved to his left expecting the catch and not the deflection off Dowrich's glove. Graeme Cremer:
"It feels good, coming from behind in a lot of this Test match. We were behind on the second and third day, today as well. Feels good to know that we are a team that will fight till the end. Lot of positives. We dropped a few catches, which obviously doesn't help. The wicket wasn't doing as much as we thought it might but dropped catches never help. Nobody wants to put catches down but that cost us. (On DRS errors) The biggest challenge in our team is that everyone wants to take the review as soon as they hit the pad. There has to be some thought on it, perhaps more confidence needed from the keeper. It will improve as we play more. (On Raza and Chakabva) Raza was exceptional, especially with the ball. It wasn't his job to come up and take five. He was supposed to do the holding job but ended up proving to be our most effective bowler. Just shows what a great all-rounder he is. Just getting better and better. Chakabva was under pressure going into this game, was short of runs and it was really nice to see him come good. We have got more than just 1-2 players putting their hands up and that is a good sign going forward."

Narper 2017-11-02 14:30:23

Sikander Raza, Man of the Match:
"I think we put huge emphasis on our fitness and to take it seriously. That has shown in our performances and it is nice to see our focus being rewarded. (On being just the 2nd player to have two 80s and a 5-fer in a Test) I wasn't aware of that to be honest. To have your name next to the legend of the game is quite humbling. I am lost for words to be honest. It is a really proud feeling. We have a Test match in December, I had an awful first Test match and I am glad I came back well. It was something my teammates expected and I expected as well. To come back personally so well and also as a team gives us a huge confidence. (On the DRS errors) I said to skipper that there is no chance that I'm going up for a review anymore, it is the keeper's call."

Devendra Bishoo, Man of the Series:
"Very happy. After England, it was good here and I made the most out of it. The second Test pitch was slower than the first one. The ball wasn't spinning much as the first game. I keep on working in the nets on my variations, especially the googly. It is just a matter of time before everything comes out well. I am looking forward to New Zealand."

Jason Holder:
"(On his first international series win as captain) It feels really good, the guys have put in a really good effort. Since a while, we have done well but not been able to get across the line in an entire series. Credit goes to the entire team for their efforts. (On not closing out this game) Obviously disappointed not to bowl them out twice. The conditions were really tough, they batted really well as well. The DRS errors didn't help but that is how the game works. It evens things out eventually. Zimbabwe played some really good cricket throughout the series and I would like to commend them for it. Hopefully they can keep it going. It wasn't easy at all, credit to Cremer and his boys. Their spinners kept the pressure on us. (On the DRS challenge) It is difficult, I remarked to many about the Hawk Eye cameras, sometimes ball tracking shows differently from what we feel with the naked eye. We just have to go with our judgement, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. (Future of the team) The team is going in the right direction, we will have a training camp in Australia before going to New Zealand. The tour won't be easy at all, so it is important for us to adjust properly and get fit physically as far as mentally."
