Its hard to compare ODI batsmen of this era, with ones of the past. Current ODI batsmen have it easier because:
1. Wickets are deliberately prepared for batsmen to score runs. In world cup in Bim, ICC called and said wickets were too fast and were ruiniing some of the contests
2. People seldom use their best bowlers. They use a lot of all rounders whose job is to keep the run rate down. The only time you might see the best bowlers, is in a world cup

Was there more variety 20-30 years ago? Was cricket a real grind in terms of the schedule? Were players suffering from burnout?
It is hard to compare, I agree, but when someone is simply dominant in a certain format, you have to give him his full due.
This guy bats at #3 in ODI's and averages 55.74 after 200+ ODI's. His numbers are truly staggering.
When teams play India, they don't show up with lampy pampy medium pacers. He's dealt with Steyn and Morkel, Broad and Anderson, Boult and Southee, Johnson and co., Starc and co., as well as the Pakistani fast bowlers.

He is the dominant ODI batsman of his era. Without a doubt.

In early days of ODI, 220 was a good score
With millions of dollars worth of contracts at stake, this is the most competitive era of cricket..
What were the older generation players playing for? They were showing their manhoods can be hard while playing against England..
Notice how less polluted this MB is today? Kohli is doing a great job cleansing!
In reply to Baje
How do you choose to look at that? One person can say that runs were hard to come by, but another can say that you could bat for 50 overs to score a century. No pressure to score freely or accelerate.
In reply to Devin
Thats why it is too hard for me to compare those eras.

Andy Ganteaume scored 114 in his only test inning, is he de greatest WI batsman ever?
In reply to WestDem
Did you know that Andy's bat handle had nails coming out and bbatting was like being on the cross?
