Russell is a great comedian.

What I loved about Carlin is that his humour/commentary was deeper than just attacks on political personalities.
He commented on systems.
His indictments of American education and consumerisn are brilliantly done.

i've watched almost everything there is on the subject on youtube 
and none yet close to Carlin imho
the man was a genius...the way he captured systems, as you noted above was really very nuanced.
Russell said sometime back something to the effect that his style took something from Carlin and something from Eddie and mashed it up (or something like that)

TBH, never heard of Bill Hicks before...will try to catch him on youtube...but it's hard to appreciate satire fully if you are a non-contemporary.
