The story is reminiscent of another black surgical pioneer, before there was a Ben Carson, and that was "Dr". Vivien Thomas for whom there is the movie - "Something the Lord Made"

There was a docu-movie thing made about this (German or swiss movie), but if I recall there were a lot of factual inaccuracies.
There are also hospitals and medical scholarships named after him in South Africa.
