David Murray....one of the best WI wkprs!

The last cricket match I played in Bim, I kept wickets and David bowled.
It was a charity match, put on by one of Yorkshire members
We had played cricket, and was coached by Foffie Williams, when he was at Wesley Hall and I at St. Matthews

I knew nothing about weed, when I left bim.
The guys wanted a dabbed of the brush, it was about manliness.
I followed his career, while in Canada, was having lunch in either 95 or 97 with my sister, who had just moved back hom, David saw me, and asked me for a dollar.
I did not know at that time, he was into drugs, the weekend I was at a cricket game at Wanderers, I was having a drink with Richard Stoute, Kevin Stoute's dad, David was there, he told me about David's situation.
We are all from the same era, Richard being about 3-4 years older than us.

David as a schoolboy was among the best keepers in bim, we all knew that, and was not surprise of him being selected.
He I must say, was selected base on ability and productivity.

Fate is a cruel thing. A one off injury, the presence of Dujon, the fact that there were no specialist spinners in the WI side at that time, all worked against David. Had anyone of those elements not been in play at the same time, Murray would probably have had a successful career with WI and might have been steered clear of the drugs and apartheid SA.
What about Boozer King as a schoolboy wicketkeeper, could David bat better than Andy?

Dujon made the team as a batsman.
Murray place was assured when he returned from injury, but he chose to go to RSA.

Thats not my recollection. Dujon kept wicket and made a good impression with some acrobatic diving catches that Murray would have skipped across to. But with 4 fastbowlers and no spinner Dujon was more than good enough as keeper. And of course his batting was sublime.
Outcome: no specialist keeper needed.
Murray was a better batsman than keeper, didn't he open on occasions. thought he was dropped because of the incident with the skipper's luggage?
In reply to LogicHe still holds the number of catches behind the wicket. Went to South Africa got a lot of money from the illegally tour, married a beautiful Aussie girl. And lost every thing through drugs.

That's just plain wrong. He was a top class keeper. He was an ordinary batsman.

Correct. He was an excellent keeper. As a batsman, both he and Emerson Trotman as well as Tony King were top class players of spin bowling particularly.

Murray could have been the backbone of a champion West Indian side. Instead, he lives in anonymity, poverty, and virtually a wreck — simply because he never realised the importance of discipline in a sportsperson’s life.

I was waiting to see who would point out his batting prowess against spin bowling.
Top class keeper who could keep to extreme pace and equally adept at keeping to spin bowling...thats why I said one of WI best wkprs ever!
