Devon continue to dominate because he simply head and shoulder above so many that we give opportunity to represent the West Indies. It is time we must be rational and give him the oportunities he deserve to help the WEST INDIES get out of this doldrum of poor performance. Hafeez cannot throw in a faster one any more to get him LBW with irrational umpires. Thanks to tv recording Devon can be only legally adjudge out once on the occasion when Hafeez was gifted his wicket on those poorly prepared pitches . Forget the mediocre Marlon Samuels - He was never competing with Devon. Twinkle Toes' competition went by the names Chris Gayle, Darren Ganga and Wavell Hinds, etc. who largely outstripped him at the highest level.

Why am I not surprised that you conveniently ignored the name Chris Gayle, who you were once advocating being dropped -along with Hinds-in favour of the hapless Twinkle Toes ?

Gayle averaged 40-plus and Hinds averaged in the 30s - both some 10 points higher than Twinkle Toes- and Ganga, while averaging in the 20s still averaged slightly higher than him- hence those 3 "largely outstripped" Twinkle Toes!!!

I trust your comprehension outstrips Twinkle Toes' batting at international level!

I agree that Darren Ganga was really not International standard. But when you consider that he had a higher average (24.5 Vs 25.7) it just reemphasizes that Devon like Ryan Hinds and Ganga did not have it in them to step up to International level.

After 30 tests your Boy Leadfoot averaged 30.50 and ended up at 42. After 35 tests the your great the Helegant one averaged 28.02 and ended up 32 at 71 but before that he peaked at 36.28 after 57.

The same way it could have probable been in the 30's or even 40's had he not been given the opportunity like Leadfoot and Helegance?

Devon is 36. For a sense of scale there were calls already for Shiv to be eased out of WI cricket by age 36, despite an average somewhere around 50 and an average since 2007 of well over 60.

Dummy, have a look at Devon's career profile by year- spanning more than a decade-and tell me if anyone but you would hazard a guess that he would have likely averaged even 30 in test cricket, had he been given more than his 38 tests over some 12 years!

Gayle & Samuels were repeatedly dropped and had to earn their way back. But anyway, this is not about them. I am not personally invested in either so whenever they were deservedly dropped I lost no sleep.

But back to the pertinent issue, if nothing else, the ending of Devon's career after such prolonged futility was akin to a mercy killing, to spare him further embarrassment!!

Devon Smith played 36 out of 38 matches versus the best Australia, England, South Africa, Pakistan (Pelter Hafeez). He never was afforded the opportunity like Gayle, Hinds and Samuels to pad his average vs Zimbo and Bangla. So juts like the 32 average Samuels could pad his average by having one purple patch year why you think Devon Smith could not do the same?

Devon Smith must be the most unique opener in the history of West Indies cricket.

Not only does he have the unique distinction of

carrying his bat on 3 separate occasions- as you

so helpfully alerted us- but no other opener can

lay claim to the unique "distinction" of scoring

88 runs in the first inning of the first test of a series, yet

aggregate 103 runs for that entire series (as he did in an away series in 2004 against Australia).

THAT HAS TO BE SOME KIND OF A RECORD !!!!!

No opener in the history of West Indies cricket -not Hunte, not Frederick, not Greenidge, not Haynes, not Gayle- can ever surpass that record, set by the legendary Twinkle Toes

One century in a career spanning 12 years!!

I Say that man should have been given 100 tests like the lead-footed Gayle (or Greenidge, or Haynes)!!

Just for comparison, at the end of their 38th test:

GAYLE had 4 Centuries and an average of 32;

HINDS had 3 centuries and a 33+ average;

GANGA had 3 centuries and an average 26+;

SAMUELS had 2 centuries (plus 2 other scores of 94 & 91) and

an average of 29+ -- all better than Twinkle Toes

at a similar juncture!!!

Btw; Gayle averaged 35+ after 30 tests. His average never dipped below 29 after his first 10 tests.

By the time he reached Devon's 38 tests, he had 4 hundreds including 2 in RSA against Ntini and Pollock and a double against a NZ attack including Bond.

Not to mention he was bringing a lot to the table in ODI cricket as an all rounder.
