NELSON IS NOT A NATIONAL HERO. PEOPLE ARE MORE ANGRY ABOUT PUBLIC PROPERTY BEING DEFACED.

Correct! It's Bajan mythology that Nelson ever had anything to do with Barbados. Indeed even though he managed British interests n the West Indies, he did NOTHING to be considered a national hero and have a statue erected to him. Matter of fact, they should take the statue and ship it to England so it could stand next to Nelson's column in Trafalgar square. Or at least ship it to Nevis, he at least got married there to Mrs. Nelson.

More importantly research shows that Nelson is an ENEMY of black people, having fought against William Wilberforce who spent time and money in an effort to abolish slavery, which arguably continued on until 1807, not without the critical support of people like Nelson!

Thank Haysoos for the few free minded people in Bim who would throw paint on his statue. In my view they didn't go far enough!!!

The IRA blew up Nelson's statue which stood on a 40 metre pillar one of the main strrets in Dublin back in 1966. I met the man who did the deed - Liam Sutcliffe - a few years ago. Sadly he died three weeks ago.

FuzzyWuzzy 2017-11-30 08:08:43

I know it is fashionable to make fun of Bajans on here. But recognise when that statue was commissioned Barbados was still a colony of Brits loyal to Britain.

Many prominent black Bajans including Hilary and Owen have agitated to have it removed. But the remnants of the plantocracy have convinced a number of Bajans that it would be a mistake to move it. Much like the confederate statues in the USA the government chickened out.

Not all Bajans are backwards

Ray123 2017-11-30 08:21:56

Most Bajans honestly don't see Nelson as a hero of any sort and they could care less. It's just a very old piece of history that is being maintained.

Move it yes but I don't think it should be destroyed.

tc1 2017-12-06 16:02:22

In reply to Norm

To show Guyanese appreciation for Gandhi's outstanding efforts against British imperialism.

Why is Nelson's statue in Bim?

Gandhi fought for India Independence from British, he thought of himself as British first, Indian second and often believed that Indians were superior to black.
he fought for a specific cause - Independence of the Indians people.

Nelson Statue was in Bim as that island was a colony of GB, founded by such, however, as Bim became an independent nation, it should have removed and place at some other location.
P.S, he later colluded with the African people to fight against the apartheid system.

cedaw 2017-12-09 09:31:02

Where did you get THAT from?

I haven't read it yet, but there is a recent scholarly work on which Gandhi's opinion (at least his early opinion) of black people features quite prominently.

The South African Gandhi: Stretcher-Bearer of Empire

Thanks

Many Black scholars pointed out this trait in Gandhi early years and his refusal to join the freedom fighters in their apartheid movement during his stay in SA.
