HEADLINE: Ryan Hinds out of Carib Beer Series

CaribbeanCricket.com 2008-03-27 09:10:06

Barbados all-rounder Ryan Hinds will miss the key Carib Beer Series match against Trinidad and Tobago starting tomorrow and is also certain to miss the second Digicel Test against Sri Lanka a week later.

A strained hamstring sustained on the opening day of the first Test last Saturday at the Guyana National Stadium will keep him out for a minimum of two weeks, according to West Indies team physiotherapist C.J. Clark.

Like I said that man must be allergic to test cricket. everytime he gets selected he gets sick or injured.

I hope he realizes that at 27 with the way west indies selectors and fans generally consider players he is old approaching over the hill and the chances going to become scarcer and scarcer. Plus in my opinion Shamar Brooks coming for both his Barbados and West Indies spot in the next two - three years.

He has always impressed me with patience and technique.

I'll pick him over Samuels any day.

In reply to Tizzle_Dndee SOme people for get that some players, who were way bigger than Hinds is right now, were great players in the past. Everygame I see players pull up with injuries. Now there is this bias because the man isnt as slim as some would like.

Can the man play cricket or not that should be the question. If you can perform what is the problem. We have carried a lot of fit men for far too long now. If Rampaul is playing at a top level then he should be there also.

I remember seeing Tom Greavney, K. Barrinton and C. Cowdrey lay waste to our bowlers as a youth. Our slim guys couldnt stop them.

Tizzle_Dndee 2008-03-27 11:34:37

In reply to seaegg99 if he could've carry his weight it would not be a prob....every time he gets a call up he play one match and then get injured....Waste...he should take his cricket serious and get in shape, he is not gettin ne younger.

To be fair it has not always been injury....illness has kept him out sometimes.

But I do beleive he has a curse on him evil

I remember Aussie David Boon taking some great catches & his batting skills were unquestioned

He was of considerable girth

I would like to believe Ryan's problems lie elsewhere

A bush bath perhaps?

seaegg99 2008-03-27 14:06:07

In reply to Tizzle_Dndee Did the weight stop him from being in contention for a WI play? Previously he had gotton sick and prior to that the man had a broken finger. What does that have to do with his weight. Hinds and Samuels have allways been two of the better young batsmen in the region.

I would hope that at some point they become fixtures in this team because they are sorely needed. Hopefully they will mature and take advantage of their obvious gifts.

Ryan's problem is that he doesn't have half of the batting talent that David Boon had.

As a True-Blue, Ryan bats too defensively.
I always remenber a game he played with Viv at Mona, Viv saying after the game that some players are survivors.

Ryan need to come out get his eyes in, and then get control of his innings.

That what I expect from an Empire batsman.

seaegg99 2008-03-27 14:27:54

In reply to openning Right about now I think Larry GOmes would be of great help don't you think. This is test cricket enough of the constant attacking. All it does is make these fools give their hands away.

Maybe if they learned a little defense first they would bat longer and save a match when it should be.

Larry was a batsman, who never looked like getting out to any bowler, these batsman seem to be so timid and give the bowler the upper hand.

Our wickets are too flat for Murli & Vass to be allowed to dominate a game.

Seems like a common WI problem

seaegg99 2008-03-27 16:02:50

In reply to openning Funny thing is he played the spinners better than some of the others. He was confident in his stroke play. I really didnt see him being timid at all. I thought the sweep shot wasn't needed at the time. Figured he would wait until after the break for that.

Not too many people are as confident as VIV so you have to cut him some slack. Even when VIV started and wasnt scoring regularly he was fully confident of his ability. WI batsmen these days are really lacking in the mental aspect of the game. Natural ability is there but mental part is lacking bigtime.

powen001 2008-03-27 16:09:13

In reply to seaegg99 he attempted the sweep shot..didnot make contact..and was given out.

The highlights reel i put up from the 2nd day attest to his skills at the sweep shot...not a LARA but he executes it well most of the time.

The sweep shot is not advisable when you are carrying a hamstring injury.

There were past greats who were over weight Ian Botham and Wally Hammond come to mind. Botham has been out of the game for almost 26 years now but things have changed quite a bit. Now the international schedule is packed and fitness is a key to success, being fat and overweight as Hinds is, contributes to injuries and since he did show good technique during his short stint in this match proves that he is capable but lacking fitness means he can't be used to good effect as a left arm spin option.
