Priyanka looks sexy in that commercial, definitely would choose her over the "lighter skinned" lady(Neha Dhupia).

I can't believe Bollywood actors/actresses would endorse that shite, even if they use those products, and we know it's widespread throughout Bollywood, they should simply keep it to themselves.

Khary9 2008-07-12 14:00:49

In reply to Devin It seems pretty open in India. I've heard that there is an Indian Dating service that openly advertises the "fairest" women on their site.

I guess this is representative of the school of thought that the WIFAN's of this world come from(cheap shot).

Interesting link. Now could you also explain what is meant by the term 'browning', its origins, use and what it tells us about Caribbean society?

Thanks.

Khary9 2008-07-12 16:22:54

In reply to Verstehen Yes...without a doubt. Skin bleaching products have a huge market throughout the Caribbean.

If you are trying to say that I am unfairly picking on India, you couldn't be further from the truth. I admire and respect Indian culture, history etc. to the upmost.

In fact I have gone on record on this MB to state that the idea of "white speriority" is widespread, world-round as this Bollywood commercial suggests.

I feel this idea is unnatural and unhealthy!

subaltern 2008-07-12 16:23:11

In reply to Khary9
This topic has been discussed ad nauseum in this MB and given the intrinsic sensitivty towards this 'phenomenon' in a Caribbean society, the subtler aspects of this prevalent sexual prejudice in parts of Indian society generally escape the discussion.

First to clarify, this is not an apologia. And I myself never had any such prejudice. This is merely an attempt to make outsiders see the faultlines in a cultural tradition in their true forms and not the mutilated and misprojected versions of them.

Three things are to be kept in mind: a. This is but a sexual prejudice. Nothing more and nothing less. It is somewhat similar to the 'tanned skin is more appealing' attitude prevalent in much of European culture. We can go on and on about the origin of this prejudice but phenomenologically speaking, it is not akin to 'racism' which is often how it is interpreted in west. This doesn't justify or forgive the prejudice.
b. It is prevalent only in some parts and some traditions. India has millions of dark-skinned -- of all shades -- very attractive women (in all strata of society) and they are enjoying their personal lives as well as anyone. This sexual prejudice, even in cultures where it is prevalent, is not ubiquitous.
c. Finally, Bollywood is an over-simplified stereotyped single-dimensional misrepresentation of the Indian experience. Many Bollywood-inspired commercials often become a self-perpetuating myth at the center of which is nothing but a vacuous desire to see the worst in us reconfirmed and sanctified.

I am vividly aware of this pleasant fact! In fact I am proud to claim firsthand acknowledgement of your claim. wink

The purpose of this thread was never to target all Indians but to attack the school of thought that claims that "white skin" is superior at its core...and there are proponents of that disgusting theory on this board(WIFAN). Personal preferrance is an individual's own business.

Personally, I could care less who thinks who is beautiful. I have seen beauty in all shades, shapes and sizes and have tried to sample the various varieties throughout my short life.

I do have a problem, however, with those who take as law or even principle that lighter skin is inherently more "beautiful" and then teach or promote the idea "ad-nauseum" as truth. That to me is undeniably wrong!

Khary9 2008-07-12 16:36:36

In reply to Verstehen My target is the idea of "white superiority" where-ever it pops its head up,not India itself. That would be foolish.

Because of the number of colors prevalent, color is a distingushing feature in Indian society unlike monochromatic societies in the world.
Once it becomes a distinguishing feature (because of the diversity) there is scope for it being used as a metric(rightly or wrongly).

Which societies are monochromatic? twisted twisted twisted
The greatest genetic diversity is???????? Lies, Lies, and Lies evil

jaydee 2008-07-12 18:03:49

Skin color is determined by the amount and type of melanin, the pigment in the skin. Variation in skin color is largely due to genetic rather than environmental causes.
. . .
Several genes have been invoked to explain variations of skin tones in humans, including SLC45A2,[5] ASIP, MATP, TYR, and OCA2.[6] A recently discovered gene, SLC24A5 has been shown to account for a substantial fraction of the difference in the average of 30 or so melanin units between Europeans and Africans

Imagine discriminating against people because of theur genes and then laughing like a blasted suryan clown cool

(Rogers, Iltis & Wooding 2004) examined Harding's data on the variation of MC1R nucleotide sequences for people of different ancestry to determine the most probable progression of the skin tone of human ancestors over the last five million years. Comparing the MC1R nucleotide sequences for chimpanzees and humans in various regions of the Earth, Rogers concluded that the common ancestors of all humans had light skin tone under dark hair—similar to the skin tone and hair color pattern of today's chimpanzees. That is 5 million years ago, the human ancestors' dark hair protected their light skin from the intense African sun so that there was no evolutionary constraint that killed off the progeny of those who had mutations in the MC1R nucleotide sequences that made their skin light. (Sweet 2002) argues that based on cave paintings, Europeans may have been dark as recently as 13,000 years ago. The painters depicted themselves as having darker complexions than the animals they hunted.

From ~1.2 million years ago for at least ~1.35 million years, the ancestors of all people alive were as dark as today's Africans.
The descendants of any pre-historic people who migrate North from the equator will mutate to become light over time because the evolutionary constraint keeping Africans' skin dark decreases generally the further North a people migrates[9]. This also occurs as a result of selection for light skin due to the need to produce vitamin D by way of the penetration of sunlight into the skin (the exception being if dietary sources of vitamin D are available--see the inuit).
The genetic mutations leading to light skin among East Asians are different from those of Europeans, suggesting that, following the migration out of Africa, the two groups became distinct populations that experienced a similar selective pressure due to settlement in northern latitudes.

from evolutionary theory the hairy people were white, then they lost hair and became black, then they migrated and turned white . . . Since the first hairless apes were black, why the hell is fair skin more highly valued . . . evil

Years ago only biologists/geneticists knew this . . . but now any old dog can google it-so what the hell is up with this WIfan nonsense . . . man, i am losing it

Jaipur, India - In India 30% of fairness creams are used by men. You have to be fair skin to be beautiful in South East Asia and the Middle East. Feelings related to beauty and attractiveness and marriage possibility are partially determined by the lightness of their skin of women and men. The top heroes in cinema are fairer than their audience. In India's movie industry scripts often follow a strict skin-to-character correlation, with light-skinned actresses in the major roles and dark-skinned actresses relegated to supporting characters. A fair skin is like education, regarded as a social and economic step up.

Historians trace the preference to Vedic times. Light skin often comes with a high caste, since India's higher caste people trace their ancestry, in part, to lighter-skinned Central Asian tribes that arrived in India thousands of years ago. Old miniature paintings have a rainbow of complexions, but the darker skins are of attendants and servers, while the royalty and privileged class are fair. In India's bazaar art the mighty Gods and Goddesses are rosy pink, except Krishna, who is the blue-skinned. Poems across the ages celebrates the marble-like body and the moon-faced. Ancient texts, which traditionally were read only by high caste Hindus, described various treatments to improve the color and quality of skin. The caste system introduced by north Aryan invaders, fair skin, pushed down the local Dravidic dark skin communities, through the untouchability, and even those who were not untouchables had to reckon with being seen as inferior to others. With the British Raj colonialism race-thinking came to India again.

Skin-whitening adverts ignite race row in India

By Andrew Buncombe in Delhi
Thursday, 10 July 2008

In recent weeks, Indians have been treated to an eye-catching television advert "mini-series" featuring three of Bollywood's hottest talents in a moody love-triangle. All in the name of skin-whitening cream.

The whitening market in India is worth millions of pounds, with men as well as women routinely buying bleaching lotions in an effort to "improve" their complexion. But the mini-series advert featuring Saif Ali Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Neha Dhupia has reopened a debate about India's obsession with pale skin and triggered an angry reaction from some who think the advert is discriminatory and outdated.
"It is strange. There is such a premium placed on pale skin," said Urvashi Butalia, a historian and director of Kali for Women, India's first feminist publishing house. "I am not sure where it comes from. It may have something to do with India's history of being colonised by various people and that there is a hangover of the idea that Aryan people are superior and Dravidian people – those who were already here – are inferior."

The purpose of this thread was never to target all Indians but to attack the school of thought that claims that "white skin" is superior at its core...and there are proponents of that disgusting theory on this board(WIFAN).

You really are one insecure idiot.
When i demolished your arguments re:'civilization developed in Africa' by pointing out NONE of the major domesticated animals necessary for civilization originate or were domesticated in Africa, you come up with more nonsense and then this.

NOWHERE HAVE I SAID THAT WHITE SKIN IS SUPERIOR. I CHALLENGE YOU TO QUOTE ME EVEN ONCE WHERE I SAID THAT.

What i said is that white skin being seen as 'pretty/beautiful' doesnt bother me one iota. Every culture has its arbitary benchmarks of beauty. There are Afro societies where more buxom figure is seen as 'sexy'(is that then discriminating against skinnier women?), there are asian socities where being tiny is seen as 'sexy',etc etc.
So facking what....some socities consider straighter nose to be sexy, some consider bigger ass, some consider long hair....Indian society today considers whiter skin to be prettier...whopee facking ding. Get over it.

And i have said before, there are societerial reasons why most societies consider whiter skin to be prettier(INCLUDING MANY AFRICAN SOCITIES-Ethiopia for eg). The reason is simple : till just over a few hundred years ago, most of the world was divided by class through heredity. People focus on the caste system in India (coz it still remains today) but fact is, the same kind of 'son becomes apprentice in father's profession, daughter gets married off to best suitor' is present in EVERY CULTURE. And in India, amongst the brown people, most people do not tan easily (ie,negligible tanning in a day exposure) but do develop a deep 'farmers tan' over the years ( farmers tan = where legs/arms/face/neck are much darker than rest of body coz its the exposed part).

And the people who develop deep tans are people who spend a LOT of time under the sun in their lives....which in pre-modern context in the world would translate to the lower classes- the farmers/labourers are the lowest class denomination from the pre-modern world- from Africa to Asia,Europe, new world -EVERYWHERE.

The people who were the fairest in society were usually the rich class- because the rich do not spend as much time in the sun as your farmer/labourer but sit inside their homes most of their lives- again, true worldwide in the pre-modern world, from subsahran africa to the civilized old world.
Over millenias, where son inherits father's position and so on, this class divide also becomes a color divide.
If i am king, i spend most of my life indoors, being lighter than most of my people. When my son becomes king, thats true as well and so on and so forth. Same applies if i were a farmer and dark- my son tans heavily too and so does his son and so on and so forth.

And lets face it - people not just today, but since time immemorial have coveted the ways of the rich/influential and tried to copy them. One of the aspects of rich in our society is that they tended to be fairer than the society( one of the chosen few, through generations spending very little time outdoors) and through time, this has been absorbed in the collective psyche as 'white = fairer'.

Unlike your ignorant, insecure self, i understand the phenomenon and i have ZERO problems with it.
EVERY definition of beauty is arbitary.

Desiring big boobs in a woman is just as discriminatory towards small breasted women as desiring white skin/black skin/blue skin.
Desiring men to be tall and ripped is just as discriminatory towards short pudgy men as it is preferring white skin to black or black skin to white, etc etc.

We don't moan about your culture finding a fat-a$$ed manly figured Serena as 'hot'. Wht the fcuk do you care if we find white skin/blue skin, straight hair/kinky hair as titillating ?
None of your facking business.....there is definitely enough indians around to not worry about your prefferences and your future contribution to our genepool....so take a chill pill and let the chips fall as they may...one culture finds stick figure to be sexy...another a fat lady as sexy...another as kinky hair and there are countless sexual benchmarks...ours happens to be fairer skin amongst many....whopee facking ding.. It doesnt even affect most people anyways, because there are many more important issues to a relationship than the color of one's skin-get over it and live with it.

Monochromatic? Not even Jamaica in terms of colour . . . but in terms of everything else-read about what others have observed here

I spent five months in Trinidad and Tobago beginning in January 2006 interviewing Muslim Trinidadians on this issue. Trinidad and Tobago, a country in the southern Caribbean, has a truly multicultural, vibrant society where religious and cultural tolerance and assimilation are an intrinsic part of the community. Muslims represent around 6% of Trinidad's population, but together they stand as a powerful force in the diverse population on the island. The two largest religions are Christianity and Hinduism. Originally settled by Spanish, British and French forces, it has had a strong European influence and a history of slavery and indentured servitude, both of which have contributed to the country's multiculturalism.

dude, what TT is, is the kind of diversity you see in Mumbai- people of several ethnicities, religions, food, dress, beleifs, etc. living in one city. Hell, more because the linguistic and culinary diversity of mumbai is far greater than your dot, nevermind the cumulative of indian diversity and diversity as encompassed by the word 'indian'. Your dot is nowhere in the picture, really. And that is not just some 'trash-superiorist talk', thats true factually.

What you fail to appreciate, is the SCALE of this diversity....

On basis of EVERYTHING that can be considered diversity of humanity- from looks, to food, clothing, beleifs, level of material wealth, etc. India's scale of diversity transcends all other nations.
It is scientifically acknowledged, that India is the most diverse nation on this planet- EVERY WHICH WAY- linguistics, food, genetic diversity, culture and looks. And that too, by far- even if we were to up the ante and compare just the nation of India to bigger political entities like 'regions and continents', India is STILL more diverse than ALL except the continent of africa.
Thats right- the diversity in the abovementioned qualities you will find in India, is that of a greater magnitude than you'll find in rest of entire asia, entire europe, entire north america, etc.
Only entirity of Africa is more diverse than India but unlike India, Africa has no common uniting factors and that is reflected by the reality that Africa has never had a stable civilization for very long after the egyptians- struggle in Africa has not been a dynastic challenge (this is a feature of the great-belt civilizations: dynastic struggle but exceptionally large periods of social stability followed by periods of instability) but that of a civilizational scale.
For eg, the mali, great zimbabwe, axum, meroe, etc. have very little evidence of dynastic struggle ( many claimants to the throne, sons fighting for faddar's crown, etc) and rulership transitions have been much smoother than the great-belt civilizations.
But African civs in post-pharonic egypt had much shorter life-spans: the great zimbabwe didnt just evolve into a different society- they were exterminated...so were mali, so was meroe, etc.

Realizing our differences and commonalities help us understand ourselves better- but unfortunately, too many are too sensetive to undertake this learning experience and hide behind PC-talk. Highlight the differences and talk about the different social orders in different society and its discrimination....*SIGH*...unfortunately, its the likes of you who cannot face the truths of humanity and instead largely hide behind your fictional God are the cause of much of our suffering, for the fundamental adherence to that psychological ASSUMPTION (God) is a remarkable underlying trait in your type of goobledegook talk.

Hey Key Mon! If you think that 10 or 100 people of each color and race represents diversity (possibly so), think about millions of people belonging to different religions, variation in complexion (due to various reasons), vastly different cultures, practices , thought processes and belief systems!
Do you think any western measure of "diversity index" will do justice to India's diversity given the fact that clowns, who have no idea about all this, are pervasive?
Look, we don't need you metrics.
India is and has been the Greatest secular country in the history of mankind. Take the assimilation of parsis, muslims, creation of Mughal culture , multiplicity of religions that got inspired from Vedanta and branched off from Hinduism , I can go on and on.
India has been thru this assimilation process on a much larger scale centuries ago. Your region is going thru it on a smaller scale (I am NOT being condescending about the scale) now and here you are wagging your tail. lol

ELF as "the probability that two individuals chosen at random from the population (country) will be from different ethnic groups. It increases as the number of groups increases and their proportionate sizes decrease. So a country with many ethnic groups, each of which has about the same number of members, would have the highest ELF. As one ethnic group comes to occupy a larger share of the population, the ELF declines."

Even if the Ethno-Linguistic Fractionalization index for India is above 80 (the 1986) figure) and for titty it is (60+), the point is that integration and difficuion of cultures is a subjective phenomenon . . . and i am telling you the tiities are more integrated . . . It is a subjective feeling-the one you get when you walk the streets, the one you get when people can't be married or remain in that grouping

Monochromatic societies (that fool Surya) will not apply to the titties . . . instead of playing with himself he should come to the islands . . .

Such arbitary ratings mean zilch...look you fool, i am a serious student of science, not your artsy-fartsy quasi-science of opinions namely, social studies....

Fact is and it is NOTED in the critical benchmarks:

In national terms,
india has the LARGEST DIVERSITY (this is factually assessed and accepted even by the UN) in:

1. Languages
2. Cuisine.
3. Genetics
4. Religion

Face that fact and fact off....nomatter how much you bray or pull laughable opinions outta your a$$ ( you are nowhere-NOWHERE- close to challenging my authority in science, kiddo), but fact remains, India is more diverse than TT can ever HOPE to be.

Monochromatic societies (that fool Surya) will not apply to the titties

An absolutist view is laughable...no society is monochromatic- by definition it'd mean descendance from the same family with same beleif...no society is based on that outside of tribes.
But fact is, compared to India and many other nations, TT is at the very low end of the scale of diversity and is 'relatively' monochromatic.

and i am telling you the tiities are more integrated

Keep pi$$ing into the wind..if you think that a nation of 200 odd years with far bigger discrimination issues in recent times is 'better adjusted/integrated' than a nation that invented humanism in the first place and has coexistence and integration at all levels in society for thousands of years, you are the fool.
And not a single scholar of repute or credibility will give credence to your nonsensical idea of that tiny dot being more diverse or even comparable to the diversity of india.
Look, India leaves US or Britain in the distance when it comes to diversity and social integration....you are talking about a nation where there are DOZENS of national languages and HUNDREDS of national dialects for eg.

And forget the whole of USA, your likke dot is nowhere as diverse as even NYC....bannuh, whether you like it or not, know that your likke dot is just a likke dot in the spectrum of humanity....in every which way....doesnt make you or your nation any less human, but its the stark truth that dotties like you hate hearing.

Do you know that India is the only non-Muslim country to allow Muslims their own civil code? Now, that's what is called freedom and being "respectful". Don't talk about fugging integration when you are in constant denial about discrimination against "higher standards".

Your sense of diversity is limited. Your brain is too small to handle big numbers.
Your overwhelming addiction to "finite mathematical induction" and propensity to draw sweeping conclusions based on your myopia and a "snapshot view" based on your troubled past is laughable.
There is only one reason why I am not resorting to quoting some arbitrary news articles on Trinidad or Guyana or Jamaica and that is I don't believe in "finite mathematical induction" as applied to real people and societies.

No, you are not. What you are like, is a retarded fool who is a clown despite not wanting to be a clown.

NOT A SINGLE Indian- or non Indian gives ANY credibility to your opinion about India. Its based on pure prejudice, personal insecurities, jealousy and a narrow mind. You have not been to India, you don't have an inkling of our cultural background.

You don't know Sociology .

No, we don't. But we don't know the opinion of every tom dick and harry who lived in this world either and every manjack who tried to convince others he knew better. Thats what your itty-bitty fields of sociology, politics, etc are: opinion driven, fluctuating in paradigm, objective and objectivity.

What Surya does know however and is FAR SUPERIOR to you in- (most of humanity is, btw) is in logic and its application with objectivism.
Therefore, we are more than qualified to rip your manjack sociology, polsci, etc. opinions to shreds when it evades objectivism and logic. And in this case it does.

Nomatter what goobledegook you throw around in your desperate attempt to equate TT with India, fact remains:

1. India is the most diverse nation on the planet for languages.
2. Ditto for culinary diversity
3. Ditto for genetic diversiy
4. Ditto for religious and philosophical diversity.

All these are accepted as facts and proven so- by the sheer prevalence of the numbers of languages, dishes, viewpoints and genetic drift in our society.

So nomatter what idiotic googledegook you pull outta your a$$, those facts don't change and those facts define what diversity is.

And as far as social integration goes- our current level of social integration is not very high but on a historic perspective, we, hands down, have been the best integrated society for mankind.
Since you love to believe in your hokey-pokey Jah God character, let me put you in this way: If God is watching from the time man started working tools and farming, India would hands down be the most integrated human society on this planet.
Period. No contest. None whatsoever.
We've scaled that pinnacle before- we will be there again.
Unlike your newborn dottie culture, ours has been around for countless years...and we've been through this more than once...just a cycle...(horsey, if you are reading this, THIS is the reason most indians are quite chilled in person: we know this is a cycle...been at the top, been at the bottom, many times over and over again...)

Its easy to move smoothly when you are an unmitigated fool and coward who skips along the surface in ignorance instead of plunging the depths of the ocen and finding out.

When someone's mind is as devoid of logic and reason as your's, frack God and sciences, it'd be easy enough to move smoothly between reality and dream-world!

Its called being 'beyond you'.
Take a facking hint: not everyone can run 100m in 10 seconds or less...not everyone can understand Subby's perspective either. You simply do not have enough knowledge and/or intellgence to understand life to such a level.

Don't worry, we are a pacifistic people. Even though we think you are an idiot and a loonie bin with defective brain function, we'll still keep you around.

News flash for jaydee! IEEE has defined a floating point number system using 0s and 1s. Perhaps too complex for jaydee to conceptualize and define degree of diversity using a weighted index and factor in aspects like language.

If any nation on the face of the planet achieves as much as Japan does in the face of such a devastation, lets talk.. May be Japan's accomplishments are difficult for populous and bigger nations, but how about smaller nations? Do you think you can achieve a percent of what Japan has achieved after being nuked? twisted

You continue to laugh at these small countries-but pound for pound they have and have had their world beaters . . . I am sorry you feel that way . . . My US experience tells me to value creativity ahead of copying . . . and these islands are creativity and innovative . . . led by the titty
Do you have any respect at all for your host? if you were educated you would, but because your are morally deficient, senslessly obstinate, obsessed with your own pale self and your superiority, you will never grow to love these islands like I do-You will be forever doomed to think that smallness is a blight and populous hunger is not a spite razz razz razz razz razz

You talked about Japan being nuked, these islands were raped, built and infested with hate, but here we are in a new day, loving and integrating (at least in Tiity) in every way. The stinking titties continue to rise and they are tackling poverty although crime is on the rise -- They must rememver never to discrimninate-to create a lower caste and a symbol of their hate-They must love all and work hard, reinvent themselves, and try never to be had, by imperialsist in any form, pale, brown or silver, or even aliens looking forlorn . . . Love all but watch your back-some strangers come like HIV, with a knife behind their back . . .
