How can a man play many match winning innings when his team can't win. Gayle made a ton in barbados in 05 against sa and them still lose recklessly with that langeveldt hat trick. Aryo go say that knock wasn't match winning?

Surya 2008-08-07 12:33:19

In reply to jen

A knock is not match winning if it doesn't win the match. lol

Amnesiac 2008-08-07 12:33:49

In reply to larafan

i'll help them

in 73 Tests Gale has been on the winning side 16 Times

Overall he averages 38.12 in Test cricket, 31.38 in Tests WI have won.
He has scored 1 Hundred in that time, 175 vs Zimbabwe.

Seems that outside of that 175 vs Zimbabwe he's only contributed to a WI victory with the ball 5/91 vs Paki

Link Text

In fact if one takes out his performances vs Zim and Bangladesh it would seem that Gayle has been part of a team that has only won 9 times against Teams ranked higher than the WI.

In those 9 Tests he has contributed 408 runs at an average of 25.50 with a highest score of 66.

Was that not a 50 over ODI?

Samwells 2008-08-07 12:34:42

In reply to Amnesiac I can think of the one in SA..I still think his attack against Steyn caused us to win that match...A man dont have to bat through an innings to play a "match-winning innings"

jen 2008-08-07 12:34:47

In reply to Surya Yeah, that's right but but there couldn't have been a much better knock from gayle there. just saying, all this thing about match winning knock is shit. Put any great player on the current zim team and they would never be heard of as a match winner.

I am not going to get into this debate but I will say one thing, your premise is a bit flawed, for I have seen many football matches here a striker has turned in a fine performance and scored 2 or 3 goals in ONE match and STILL end up on the losing side.

Carry on smartly.

Amnesiac 2008-08-07 12:36:38

In reply to Samwells

Right

u know u just lowered the standards there eh

So basically almost any WI with an average over 30 cud say he has played a matchwinning innings

Samwells 2008-08-07 12:48:08

In reply to Amnesiac How do you determine what is a match-winning innings?

during that period of 73 test... how many opening batsmen around the world played match winning innings?

Surya 2008-08-07 13:08:10

Cool Carl Scored 149 cool

jen 2008-08-07 13:16:34

That innings i'm talking about is odi's indeed folks. just making a point about this thing about who played match winning innings isn't quite bang on target. a man can make a real damn good 200 and lose. he needs a good team to play regular match winnings knocks.
