This is the strongest one day team that could have been selected. The only weakness is the lack of a batting all-rounder who can spin- Samuels don't fit the role.

Well done selectors

Timpy Sep 23, 2014, 4:19:05 PM

In reply to Emir

So gives us some reasons why him no fit the role no.

timeless99 Sep 23, 2014, 4:20:29 PM

the best odi 15 available expect when cg is fit either of johnson or smith would make way good team

I calling it now! Simmons will be the star on this tour.

Meh done talk.

Emir Sep 23, 2014, 4:57:25 PM

In reply to Timpy

Marlon doesn't fit the role of a batter who could spin because his action was questioned and his bowling isn't good enough to trouble the Indian batters.

Emir Sep 23, 2014, 4:58:23 PM

In reply to timeless99

Agreed, but Smith of Leon can outperform Chris on current form.

Cowcorner Sep 23, 2014, 5:00:15 PM

Ravi should be in the XI

Commie Sep 23, 2014, 5:50:16 PM

Still picking a t20 team and trying to pass them off in ODI cricket.

Good luck with that.

Headley Sep 23, 2014, 6:05:58 PM

In reply to Jabari18

Ravi is too fat. I have a difficulty with fat fast bowlers. He is no use after the initial spell.

We will need Big B because unfortunately the stats show Roach is not very effective away from home and Taylor is not very effective period. Russell is a work in progress.

We will struggle to get 8 wickets. After the Indian tour we will find our senses and be brave enough to pick Holder and Cotterell who are young and with experience will be better than a reconstituted Jerome and an unfit Ravi.

I Totally agree with you.
This is a T20 team.
The selectors are scouts, these guys should only give recommendations

VIX Sep 23, 2014, 6:19:27 PM

one pacer too many methinks. Benn shouldve been there. Anyways, same licks either way. WI cant compete at that level.
sad

Commie Sep 23, 2014, 6:20:45 PM

In reply to Headley

For 5 overs Ravi can be about the best fat bowler in the world.

Its the remaining 5 and all that pesky running and fielding that might kill him.

This is International cricket, what are you talking about?

You don't experiment at this level, unless the player has done it locally

Nice 11

DIEHARD Sep 23, 2014, 7:32:07 PM

All y'all complaining about this not being an ODI team. Who are the 5 batsmen you would pick to make up WI ODI top 5? I'm OK with four all rounders in a squad of 15.

Pollard Bravo Russell and Sammy are the four. Are the major objections Smith and Simmons?

Are the alternatives that much better? Consider as well Simmons and Smith's form record and experience in Indian conditions. It's a damn good squad

Was wondering what kind of nonsense this is and had to read it again. But then I saw.

The team that should play the 1st ODI

Dwayne Smith
Simmons
Samuels
Darren Bravo
Pollard
Ramdin
Dwayne Bravo
Russell
Roach
Holder
Narine
12th man - Taylor

I am really worried about having D.Bravo and Sammuels coming next to each other Brian. Both have the potential to kill the game right away.

I would say Have Ramdin / Johnson at No.3 to Buffer the game.

Dwayne Smith / Russel / Taylor
Johnson
Samuels
Simmons
Darren Bravo
Pollard
Ramdin
Dwayne Bravo
Holder / Russell / Taylor
Roach
Narine

In Case a bowler has to be added my Choice would be Russel in place of Holder or Dwayne Smith or Sammuels as per the need.
12th man - Russel

Who fatter,Ravi or Botham?

Cowcorner Sep 24, 2014, 1:44:53 AM

Although Ravi is not in the best shape, he is still one of our best bowlers. Hence the question should be is he one of your best 4 bowlers. If the answer is yes then he should play.

Also the more he plays the fitter he "should" get.

I can only assume that since he has been selected the selectors believe that he can bowl 10 overs.

In my view Ravi is ahead of Taylor he may not be fitter than Taylor but the bottom line is I want the best bowler and that bowler may not always be the fittest bowler.

The numbers tell a clear story - Ravi can be useful for his first spell, he is of no use for any subsequent spell.

Managing a fat fast bowler is a novel problem. Based on familiarity, Bravo is the right man for the job. Can WI afford to use him (Ravi) for only 6 overs?

Maybe a smart captain should give him 5 or 6 overs on the trot, give him a 1 - 2 overs rest and let him bowl the rest and finish for the day. If WI is serious that experiment should have been conducted already.

Ravi's bigger problem like Sammy and Taylor is that he is not skillful enough to vary line, length and pace to be effective during the last ten overs. Russell is a runs truck but he does try to bowl yorkers and if properly handled may be the better than Ravi or Taylor for the final 2 or 3 over spell.

The only guys who are better than these based on stats are Gayle, Chanders, and Lil B.

BTW Simmons, Samuels and Russell all average around 31.

See my reply to Commie on Ravi.

You're kidding right?
Ravi has proven to be more skillful bowler at the than any from the WI in this generation.
Its all in his head, thats what's messes him up these days.
That Champions League match with the super over messed him up.
Needs to see a shrink.

Comparisons are difficult and most times of little value. To compare two players who are so unlike can only be justified if drinks are involved. lol

The truth is WI missed the boat so they are committed to this group before they can move on after the WC.

Instead of blooding specialists with the capacity to function otherwise, they have stuck to the same model of using the T20 players and cross match them into ODI cricket.

There are two players I would have liked to see as part of the World Cup mix.

Carlos Braithwaite. Because he is a genuine allrounder.

Jonathan Carter. Because he is a genuine batsman who like Marlon can actually bowl, except his specialisation is medium pace. He is not an allrounder. He is a batsman who can bowl.

The issue with the WI bowlers is that there is going to be alot of cricket played over the next few months leading up to the WC. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to calculate that workload management is going to be key.

Stats can be misleading, especially career stats
This year BigB batting stats in the 50 over tourney was 23.00 after five games, Simmons 28.00, Gayle, Samuel, Sammy or Pollard did not play in this format.
Check these stats against England last year, I am shock to see Sammy and Smith in this squad.
