BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Ramnaresh Sarwan is far from washed up and can still feature in future West Indies’ Test teams.

That’s the belief of Gus Logie, who last week drafted the stylish out-of-favour Guyana and West Indies middle order batsman into the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force side for the upcoming Professional Cricket League (PCL) in the Caribbean.

“I believe so. You never say never and at 34 years old, once you are hungry enough, once you are willing to put the work in, I have no doubt his talent will come to the fore once again,” Logie said when asked in an interview following last Monday’s draft at the Accra Beach Hotel whether Sarwan can force his way back in the regional team.

With the current lack of solid middle order batting, every decent batsman is relevant

Relevance will be established by performances and results not only for Sarwan but for some others, provided that they are selected by their teams:

Powell - Needs at least three centuries and a good average to put his blip on the radar again.

Sarwan - Needs to score heavily and be very athletic and sound in the field to wake up selectors to considering him again. This has to be convincing not marginal.

Barath - Cannot even get onto an 'A' team. He needs to survive for long periods at the wicket and score heavily. If he slices to point and is back in the hut after scoring 30 that will not do it.

Pollard - Can he establish himself as a solid 4-day batsman again and be the heir-apparent to Chanders ?

K. Edwards - Out of form and out of favour now. Heavy runs can cure his ills and this is the only way to get back on the test team. Will he show up ?

Cummins, Beaton, Cottrell, Johnson, and even Fidel - all need to tickle the selectors with performances that prevent people over-looking them.

Young guns Blackwood, Evin Lewis, Carter, Tagnarine need to validate people's suspicions of their talents and address the selectors with the preponderence of runs.

The problematic spinners Shillingford, Narine need to demonstrate their problems are behind them.

The fledeling 'allrounders' - whom will emerge ? DJ Bravo, Sammy, Russell, Holder, etc.

It's a much longer season; the potential earnings are substantial if picked for Windies and there is a lot to play for. It should be a very exciting season.

One more thing: We really, really need some pitches with pace and bounce. We will face such pitches in South Africa and Australia in both upcoming test series and the World cup; and we should place England under arrest with these surfaces when they visit too.

I am a big fan of Sarwan but he has not had any significant performances in the last 2-3 years. At this time he should have been playing some club level cricket to get back into playing form. He should not have expected the Guyana Board to select him based on his performances 2-3 years ago, regardless of issues he has with a Guyana Board member.

Permit me to add the name, Ambris, to your list. Many pundits feel he has the talent, technique and temperament to play for West Indies. However, these days it seems he can't even make the A team. Let's hope the young man stays focussed and doesn't get discouraged.

Agreed. He is a potentially exciting, aggressive batsman but needs to put it all together.

In fairness to Sarwan he has been plying his trade in the English league first division for Leics. So he has been playing cricket.

Yes, but his performances were not significant. He should have been playing at some level in the last 2-3 months. I haven't heard or read about him doing that.

Sarwan played only a handful of cricket so far in 2014? He need to get into game shape to really do well...I wish him well but its all on him now!
