RIP...one of the best!
Sad news. I remember the John Holt performing "Sweetie Come Brush Me" at the Sports Hall in Georgetown around 1980, that was the first concert that I attended.
One of the greatest and the nephew and grandson of West Indies cricketers JK Holt,Sr & JK Holt, Jr.
Really loved his work with the Paragons
Maybe Someday
Memories By the Score
is this for real this time?

Be at peace John
In the Morning
My all time favourite recording by him. RIP JK Holt
RIP indeed. I never heard him live, but he was a great singer from our golden age of crooners. Few of them left now. Even sadder is that there are very few identifiable replacements.
In reply to FanAttick
Condolences...Another cultural icon gone
In reply to FanAttick
Truly one of the great ones. An icon. I still play his tunes. Those with the Paragons are extra special.
RIP John Holt. Great innings.

Tribute to John coming up on Irie FM after news - including his recent interview with Ron Muschette.
In reply to Chrissy
Par for the course is show biz!
When Bob Marley collapsed in NY, and was given a few weeks to live, his record company released a statement that he was suffering from "'exhaustion".
Bob even appeared on radio to dismiss 'rumours' that he was sick.
In reply to FanAttick
Rest in eternal peace John
Oh my. Sorry to read dis one. An icon. RIP star.

RIP Mr Holt, known your music from hearing my pops play them

RIP, John, and condolences to his survivors.
I am currently in Hartford, which was his N.A. home base back in the day. I'm betting there will be some kind of musical memorial.

R.I.P. John Holt. The first 45 I ever bought as a teenager was 'Ali Baba' by the Paragons. His voice had a quality that just appealed to me.
Still listen regularly to his live performance backed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Voice sweet like molasses. Really glad I saw him live...RIP
Irie FM rocking wid bolts of Holt.
Sweet fi days.
In reply to Doncaster
I think Ali Baba & Tonight were among his first solo efforts after leaving the Paragons.
In reply to jacksprat
Seriously he has one of the most beautiful voices on dis planet.
In reply to Chrissy
RIP to the legend...and my neighbor!
Tears flowing now for the family and kids.
In reply to Chrissy
Yeah, I put John Holt right up there with Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Sam Cook, etc.
In reply to Khary9
I can imagine I mean John was barely 60.
In reply to Chrissy
I think John was mid- to late-60s!
He had been singing for more than 50 years

All the time I had thought he was JC man.

Check this vid from the same concert with the LPO . For me this is his greatest tune and this version, with the full, lush strings and brass of the LPO in counterpoint to the percolating keyboards and Lloydie on bass, is reggae at it's finest!
Desmond Dekker, Alton, Gregory and now John Holt ......legends all gone.
Who leave .....Ken Boothe, Toots, Leroy Sibbles, Beres ....?
When this generation of singers pass, who will step into their boots and carry on the tradition of great reggae singers? There are many good artistes out there but not many good singers.
Taurus Riley and Romain Virgo are genuine contenders. But who else will carry the torch that these legends have borne all these years ....?
In reply to JohnBull
YES YES YEES ... JB ... that's the one I was looking for but I had limited time before starting a meeting i was running and hadd to settle for the one i put up ... Jah Bless!! Tenks ... is the other day I played that for an american friend and him ask who dat sound so good .... that recording is WICKED stuff!! And John 'the man" Holt was in spendiferous form - elegance and all.
A true legend has passed ... believe that .... his days as a paragon was great, but man his solo career rose to higher "Ites, Gold and Green".
Right now ... I don't feel many of the upcoming newcomers (and some are good) have the voice range of a john Holt ... not yet!!!
A Thousand Volts... RIP Holt!!!
RIP John Holt.
Thanks for "The Memories by The Score".
"Stick By Me & I Will Stick By You", wicked tune. Yes, it was 1971, and the first time I ever called a radio station to request a song and Winston Barnes obliged with this monster hit, that Saturday night.
In reply to CWWeekes
Big tune dat
In reply to jacksprat
Nuff errors on radio today still 67 is young these days.
And yes his voice was up there with the best on the planet.
In reply to JohnBull
I am sure that you recall that A Love I Can Feel is an old Temptations' song that John covered.
He really was outstanding in doing cover version. His cover of the Four Tops' Left With A Broken Heart is one of my favourites songs of his.
In reply to jacksprat
shows you're human.
In reply to Wally-1
LOL!!!
In reply to jacksprat
A friend asked me last night who had more covers Holt or DB?
In reply to Chrissy
I would have to say John Holt.
Among his most prominent albums, 1000 Volts of Holt & Fistful of Holt, he had almost all covers.
I must say he did them all justice and even improved on the originals!!
In reply to jacksprat
Our singers are notorious for covering foreign tunes ....notorious!
And if you ask me, btwn the reggae-fication of the beat and the natural soul of the vocalist, it very often sounds as good as or better than the original.
In reply to JohnBull
I concur!!!!
In reply to JohnBull
That's coz so many tunes need reggae treatment in order to sound extra sweet.
RIP Mr Holt.
I was going to ask if her was related to Lester Holt Jr, but it looks as if he's only 'Jamaican' on his mother's side.
In reply to JohnBull
In reply to JahJah
Lester Holt Jr. ... related to me and Wackie from his Jamaican mother's side(the Heron/Wilson link up). A few years ago he went 'home" with his mother to JA to visit the homegrown hometown in Manchester/St.Elizabeth area. It was televised via his station some while back.
In reply to np
I saw that program. There was also a white reporter from NBC who grew up in Jamaica as well.
Im feeling sad...all my reggae heroes who I grew up on has gone...Dennis Brown,Sugar Minnott,Gregory and now John Holt. As a teenager they hooked me to dancehall reggae.
In reply to np
Cool Cool. Too bad I didn't see that one.
Yu related to nuff people boss.
In reply to JahJah
It should be on Youtube or somewhere else on the 'net. It was around the time of the anniversary of JA's 50th anniversary
