HEADLINE: Reckless fools, says Jones

CaribbeanCricket.com Nov 7, 2014, 2:58:44 AM

West Indies players who took strike action and abandoned the recent India tour, have come in for scathing criticism from former Australian international cricketer and commentator, Dean Jones.

In an interview with PakPassion.net today, Jones described the Dwayne Bravo-led squad as “dummies”. Jones said he fully understood that the players needed to be paid but suggested they just hadn’t thought their actions through or worked out the implications. He noted tours had been abandoned before for reasons ranging from riots to assassinations, but the West Indies were the only ones to abandon a tour over money.

Aussies minimum retainer is $500,000. have they ever gone on a tour without a contract?

Is he incorrect. WI are the only team to abandon a tour because of money.

Yet even after that pay cut these guys are almost 2 times better paid than pakistan for example, who have real reason to strike.

So why your ass not in Jamaica retiring and dying for that flag.

Stop muddying waters. The fact is, WI is the only team that has abandoned a tour over money. What is worse is that they are far from the poorest paid and they are the worst performing of the traditionally big teams.

Its like a perfect cluster fuck.

crapaud Nov 7, 2014, 3:18:27 AM

Painful as it is to read, its difficult to deny the logic of what he is saying. I thought the players looked silly at the time, Bravo was too pompous and that was a reckless and stupid act..You can't down tools when you have a dispute with your union...

I mean....they are just a mediocre near bottom of the table bunch. Even things like Ramdin signing himself West indies captain just looks laughable..

Commie Nov 7, 2014, 3:30:13 AM

The issue is that WI are the ONLY team to abandon a tour over money. Therefore the context of how much they are paid vs other teams who have more strife becomes relevant.

Stick to topic.

Luckily the general public cares less and less about this as time goes by.

Don't expect the delusional to support your claim though. The truth can be a very abrasive thing but the truth is the truth.

No wonder these West Indies cricekters are so mentally weak on the field of play. They just can't think through things. After all, it does appear that they are at times more into the flashing of bling, sunglasses and the display of 'prettiness' on the field of play...

You do understand what the term reckless fools means though.

Once you graduate to telling me about what nationalism means to Pak and SL rather than addressing the core issue I think we have a jumpoff point.

Funny...nationalism means nowt to the same Pak players having the most banned players for match fixing, including the national disgrace, bans and jail associated with small sums of money.

But of course they won't strike cause of love for flag.

Commie Nov 7, 2014, 5:22:16 AM

The statement is a fact. WI are the only set of players to have abandoned a tour because of money in this modern era.

That fact then couches an opinion that they are reckless fools for what has ensued.

Liking Dean Jones or not doesn't change the fact. You could query the harshness of reckless fools but it is pretty obvious they didn't think through the consequences.

I totally agree with you Jones. The truth is the truth.

You have a serious inferiority complex.

Following your way of thinking and looking at the same facts Jones, the BCCI and Michael Holding looked at, the truth is the truth where Jones is concern but it is lies where the BCCI and one of your own re Michael Holding is concern.

It is either guys like you cannot be logical in your approach to simple facts, cannot be objective and lacks the ability to think rationally.

Sad.

The simple fact is to look at what has been gained and what has been lost. You do not cut off your nose to spite your face.

If the problem is you are being underpaid to do a job the solution is not to blow the building up and become a merc. The players did not follow proper grievance procedures.

When others are wrong make sure you stay in the right. The players went wrong like everyone else.

sunfish Nov 7, 2014, 5:39:19 AM

'Reckless Fools' is an accurate and reasonable description of men who down their tools because of a dispute with their own union, without considering the consequences.

May I also add another one: Stupid, Stupid!

Besar Nov 7, 2014, 5:41:53 AM

Although you did not ask me the question, I feel compelled to answer. Have you ever considered that while more cricket improves a team's competiveness, that the west indies face problems that are unique? Do you recognise how physically fragmented the West Indies are? Small islands, with small populations; do you know how costly it is to transport a number of cricketers for an extended period from island to island, feeding them, housing them. A few days ago you criticised the Windwards for holding 2 days competition; do you believe that the windwards organisers are so stupid, or they are hampered by serious limitations? These are poor, struggling economies where the Boards are as broke as the governments; often, the 2 day competitions are what they can afford. Do you think it is easy to have 4 days competition which involves total costs and no returns; nobody looks at these matches, everything is cost. Look, a few weeks ago, Anguilla had to forfeit the Leewards finals, apparently because of the expense of travelling from Anguilla to Montserrat. And they have condensed their competition this year to minimise cost

Agreed, as much I want to see the WICB totally reformed into a democratic well functioning board. It is difficult for me to conceive what would possess both sides to take the nuclear option and the obvious mutually assured destruction that would follow. How difficult it is to think 3 steps ahead....too sad..

The simple fact is to look at what has been gained and what has been lost.

You may not be aware of how correct you are with that statement.

It can be a topic for debate that can go on for many, many years to come.

In every debate there is a winner. Contrary to popular belief, there are no ties in debates.

Think about it.

Interesting that some are happy that the players are called by Dean Jones as fools. But just look at his solution

“But don’t bring this stuff halfway through a tour and use that as leverage. What they [players] should have done was say to the BCCI, we want some advice about this from you and can you help us out. They need to understand India provides all the dough and they are the big bosses there whether they like it or not. They should have said well we’re not going to come to India in the first place so can you please fit Sri Lanka, Bangladesh or whoever in that spot and then BCCI would have had time to fit that in,” Jones suggested.

He just says players are to be concerned about BCCI and interact with BCCI directly... Just shows scant regard for WI cricket and WICB in particular.

Yes they are and will always be. However, a competent company owner or a CEO will not allow a few of their employees to bring down the entire company. Only an arrogant one, like Cameron/WICB, will.

And I'm not objective(eewwwww) because my position is in conflict with yours? I have long told y'all these cricketers are plain greedy......and truth be told, they are not smart.

Tell me how much bargaining power they now have seeing that a $42 million US charge is now hanging over the head of their employers. So they way to go about seeking a pay increase is to do something that will bankrupt your place of work and then on the heels of the bankruptcy still demand for a pay increase eh.

Anyways, maybe you have never read this but allow me to repeat the following - PLEASE do not use he word objective in reference to me on this side of this MB. That word and its meaning has been contaminated by its association with certain people on this MB. Hence I do not want to have any association with the word "objective" this side of the MB.

If anyone thinks that the players DID considered the full ramifications of their action and STILL striked then they are bigger IDIOTS than can be imagined.

Personally I wouldn't credit them with enough common sense to have been able to consider the full consequences.

So it goes without saying that they didn't consider the full consequences of their actions before they went on strike, so they ARE IDIOTS!!

The only other excuse is they acted under orders from the BCCI to help kill off Test cricket - my conspiracy theory,,,

Logic Nov 7, 2014, 9:45:20 PM

In reply to Commie

The statement is a fact. WI are the only set of players to have abandoned a tour because of money in this modern era.

It is also a fact that the wicb is the only cricketing authority that having sent its players out without a renewed contract, then submits a new contract to them WHILE ON TOUR for signature which radically changes their pay structure to the tune of an up to 75% reduction in compensation. Come to think of it they are probably the only sporting authority of any stripe that has tried that stunt in this modern era.

WICB's action was unprecedented so no surprise that the player's reaction broke new ground. I am perplexed as to why people expect the players, whose job is to play cricket, are expected to be that much smarter and that much more mature than the wicb leadership whose only job is to preserve and protect our cricket.

Logic Nov 7, 2014, 9:52:20 PM

In reply to Commie By the way you missed or ignored the main point I was making regarding the relevance of Jones' character and agenda. I do agree with the obvious: that a fact is fact regardless of character of the messenger. It was in reference to your constant reference to the boogeyman Ramnarine.

For the record, I detest Ramnarine and his m.o. but, as I have said before, the wicb is responsible for Ramnarine resurfacing, not Bravo.
