Uphill task for Jamaica's batsmen

Jamaica Franchise's batting will face a big test today after leaders Guyana Jaguars scored 298 for eight on yesterday's opening day of their four-day WICB Professional League encounter at Sabina Park.

Asked to take first strike, the Jaguars produced a good allround team effort with left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, the tournament's leading wicket taker, topscoring with an unbeaten 75. The other leading batsmen were wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble, 47, captain Leon Johnson, 41, veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 29, and all-rounder, Raymon Reifer, who also scored 29.

Leg-spinner, Odean Brown, returning for the first time since a knee operation early last year, has so far taken three for 66 with another returning player, fast bowler Jason Dawes, bagging two for 15.

"I think it was a tough day, knowing that we won the toss and put them in," commented Jamaica captain, Tamar Lambert.

Volcanoes erupt

The Trinidad and Tobago Red Force were put to the sword by the Windward Islands Volcanoes on the first day of their fifth round Professional Cricket League (PCL) four-day match at Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia, yesterday.
Tyrone Theophile slammed his maiden first class century to guide the hosts to 388 for eight at the close. Theophile, playing in his 30th first class match, struck 136 to set up his team’s innings before Keddy Lesporis piled on the misery for the T&T bowlers, hitting his sixth first-class half century (83).
