A brilliant century on Test debut from Adam Voges has helped Australia recover from another disappointing performance against the turning ball and be in a dominant position after the second day of the first Test against the West Indies in Dominica. Voges finished unbeaten on 130 from 247 balls to become the oldest man in history to score a hundred in his first Test and the 20th Australian to achieve the feat.
 Voges was the only frontline Australian batsman to resist against a quality display of leg-spin from Devendra Bishoo, who took career-best figures of 6-80.

The Windies lost both openers before stumps to be 2-25 at the close, a deficit of 145, with 22 wickets falling in a chaotic opening two days of the match.

That's because Australia knows how to build their team while the home team knows nothing about building a team. They are more known for breaking down than building. Take for example the last time these Aussies played against the West Indies in Dominica, three years ago. The 2012 match was a hard fought one in which Australia won by 75 runs. Amazingly only Brathwaite and Daren Bravo survived. Others, especially those who played a meaningful role in that close match were all cutoff by selectors. Where is Chanderpaul who scored 68 and 69? Where is local boy Shane Shillingford who had 10 wkts? Where is then captain Sammy who scored 61? Where is Narsingh Deonarine, who along with Shane almost carried us through? They have all been cutoff by Lloyd and selectors. We are good at breaking what we trying to build while Australia knows how to build. If only our selectors were following stats West Indies would be a far better team and would not be almost in the bottom in ranking. But selectors have no patience and they don't seem to be computer literate to follow stats, which would serve as a guide to them when picking a team.

Yes, I was at Kensington Oval the last time Australia toured, and we were much more competitive than this time around...at least for the first three days.

The WI is rebuilding at the moment, so expect rebuilding pains. This team should be more competitive at the end of the year when they visit SL.

Dayne, are you are regular follower of West Indies Cricket? If yes, how long does it take to rebuild a team? For the past 5 yrs we have been rebuilding and every year we have a new team. Is this how we rebuild? Take for example the last time we played Australia at this same venue in 2012. Do you realize that ONLY Brathwaite and Darren Bravo are the survivors, with only Chanderpaul was in his 30's and now fired? Our selectors clearly does not know where they are going. Here they are selecting Chandraker to open the batting and chose to open with Hope, a middle order batsman. Let us not even mention the injustice done to Dominican opening batsman Tyrone Theopile, who got the most runs in our just competed tournament. They dropped Chanderpaul because of age and out of form according to Lloyd. Yet, they left out Tyrone Theophile who is 25, and in great form. This is madness and Dominicans should have boycotted the game just as Bajans did when Cummins was not seleted.

Australian test debutant, 31 years old Adam Vogues, was for sure the hero. Compare his age to that of Shiv who is 40 and was sacked. Also, here is how Vogues picked himself according to Australian chief selector: "Marsh explained that Voges' sheer weight of runs had pushed him ahead of Joe Burns...where did vogues get his runs? Here is Marsh again "He had a magnificent Shield season, absolutely no doubt about that," Marsh said of Voges. "I looked at him on four or five occasions, maybe more, this year.Here is Mark Waugh: "Pure weight of runs, and the way in which he got those runs [put Voges ahead of Burns]. You could just see Test player written all over him. Mark Waugh saw him bat, Trevor Hohns saw him bat, I saw him bat, all the state coaches, all the state talent managers. Everyone said the same thing - surely we can't all be wrong.
I asked how many times did Clive Lloyd and selectors watch Tyrone Theophile? Young Hope picked himself when he got the double century against Windward Islands. But that in that same game Theophile also got a century and had a record opening partnership of 269 with Devon Smith, another young windward island player that was discarded after 2 games against England, with scores of 11 & 65 in the first test and 15 and 2 in the second test. There is a lot of prejudice in the WICB and I wish they would be investigated like FIFA.
