HEADLINE: Degenerating WICB can't ignore latest call for change

CaribbeanCricket.com Aug 16, 2015, 3:15:36 AM

It has become a habitual question that continues to defy an acceptable answer. The West Indies Cricket Board has twice commissioned reports to recommend changes to its governance. Each time it ignored their main points.

In the meantime, the game in the region has gone into such a state of decline that the team that dominated the world for 15 years now languishes near the bottom of the ICC rankings. Simultaneously, the WICB is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.

The former Jamaican prime minister PJ Patterson, who headed the committee that prepared the first document in 2007, complained that he and his two other committee members had wasted two years of their lives working on the assignment.

Five years later, Queen's Counsel Charles Wilkin of St Kitts-Nevis, at one time a left-arm spinner for Cambridge University and the Leeward Islands, heatedly quit as head of the governance committee after the WICB directors "refused to make any change at all to the current structure". He charged that the incumbents "wanted to preserve at all costs all of their positions on the board".

In my view, the WICB will not accept changes that dilute their power. They like the fact they don't have to answer to anyone. So the only way the WICB will accept significant change is if they are forced to do so.

Time is ripe to go alone!

Step.1: T20 & Olympics
Post WC 2016

step.2: ODI cricket
Post WC 2019

Step.3: Test Cricket

Seriously, we can't do any worse individually, as we are doing collectively under WICB!

There is a lot of T20 money out there
Let each region develop its own talent and make it in the market themselves

The word HAD IS FREAKING PAST TENSE .
WE have had to much freaking Mediocrity
from those in the governance of Cricket in the Region for Years .

Well it seems that Cozier has had a Saul on the Road to Damascus moment ;
suddenly it seems that he has got Religion . What took YOU so Long ??

Perhaps , this may clear the way for
others like Becca to say Mea Culpa ,
I will always insist that those in the Media have been a large part of the problem regarding the Regression of Cricket in the Region .

They have always sided with the Masters of Disasters , who govern Cricket in the Region . In my opinion ,they have been , and possibly still are complicit with those in the governance of Cricket in the Region for the Sad Sorry State of Cricket in the Region .

It seems that now everyone wants to jump overboard , since the Ship appears to be Sinking . I guess Wilkins Article has awaken some of the Sports Journalists in the Region.

Mr. Wilkin's statement regarding what the Supreme Court stated about the BCCI , as I stated in this Forum months ago is very telling ; especially when the Court stated emphatically that the BCCI does not own Cricket in India , it is the Custodians of the game in India .

Therefore the Worst International Cricket Board in the World, ala the WICB , do not own Cricket in the Region , it is only the Custodian of
Cricket in the Region .

The decision of the Court in Indian ,
also reinforces the fact that the ICC
and its member Boards aint above the law . I have stated this several times here , regarding the President of Pakistan firing the PCB ON 4 separate occasions occasions , and appointed a Chairman , and an Ad Hoc
Committee to govern Cricket in Pakistan , until there was elections
for Offices on the Pakistan Cricket Board .

Politically, not all the governments are that bad. Some however, are a little flakey at times, but I would not go that far as to even compare them with this WICB org; however, they cannot do any worse than what is going on with this present crop of lemonade Dave Cameron and his incompetent crew of directors.

Maybe “I will reiterate here and say:” what this Organization need is a massive shakeup where the stakeholders could step in and seize the whole WICB organization and implement the pertinent report/s that everybody kept talking about. They (the stakeholders) should try it for once to show the WICB that they are serious with intent of rescuing this ORG from a dismal display that has been haunting WI cricket for the last Twenty years.

Who knows, maybe this is what the WICB need – to set cricket (especially test and ODI cricket) on a different footing forward in this 21st century.

BTW, I thought Hunte and Hilliare, especially the latter who seems to be talking down to the players, were out to lunch in some instances during their tenure, but this present WICB takes the cake. They are really something else in truth…!

Maybe I am witnessing some of the old bastions of confederation (that I read about in some of my Grandparents’ teachings) who will not go down quietly. Maybe I am giving them too much credit here because they know not what they are doing.

You are asking for a freaking Miracle ,
the fact is that they do not want to change the current structure .

Doing that will mean that their Power
and Grip on Cricket in the Region will
be diluted ; and that must never ever happen .

The very fact that they have commissioned at least 3 Reports and ignored them , certifies that THEY
are only interested in saving their Hides .

Saving Cricket in the Region & Internationally comes in at a distant second . While Bangladesh & Zimbabwe
have improved , in the longer versions of the game :

WE ARE BOTTOM DWELLERS , and that does not concern them in the least . As long as they can enjoy the perks &
prestige ; they are happy , and are
heartily supported by the International Cricket Cabal aka the
ICC , whose only interest is to rake in a lot of money . Good Governance aint on its agenda nor the WICB's Agenda .

I repeat...At least WI cricket had a heyday.

All of the Caribbean islands have been subsidized by debt and not much else and Trinidad the one exception would like be a cross between Pakistan and Sierra Leone if it wasn't for its commodity resources. There is that much tribalism and corruption.

WI cricket excelled. What Caribbean govt has excelled?

Hunte btw accepted and voted for the Wilkin recommendations. He was out voted by the rest of the Board.

It is wishful thinking that these guys will vote themselves out of usage unless literally forced to.

The ICC Will continue to subsist the WI because the alternative is to support more errant step children in a more complex cricket world.

Hence the WICB and the ICC are inextricably linked. If you want the WICB to fall you have to want the ICC to fall. There is no other way around it.

This isnt some Roy of the rovers story where the hero thumps in the goal on the 90th minute via a fantastic volley.

This is real life deal making in a sport where it is proven as it has by the IPL that all of the arguments become moot when enough money is thrown around.

sunfish Aug 16, 2015, 2:56:46 PM

The WICB makes a valid point that it's pad policy to add another level on top of the current management structure because it would create more inefficiency.

The changes should happen at the regional director level. too many of them, and they should be cut by one half. However, this change has to come form outside because the said directors would not vote themselves out of a job.

I think that the CariCom Cricket Committee are the ones to cut out this fat.. They the Committee, should act in only extraordinary circumstances less they run afoul of the ICC.

Make the cuts then get out of the way and let the streamlined organization run the operations..

the size of the board is not a problem, modern corporations have easily 3 times the number of people on the board. WICB biggest issues are lack of accountability, lack of transparency and planning. Maybe they should do away with the outside president and let directors serve in that position on a rotating basis.

to add another level on top of the current management structure

Said that long time. That was the weakness of the Patterson report. It some how assumed that by making the board report to another authority filled with people from the business community, politicians and lawyers it would somehow make it more accountable. Sounds like a political solution written by a politician. But wait Patterson was a failed ...never mind.

Anyway you are correct part of the solution is sending back these directors to their regional organizations and WICB entering into a real partnerships with these regional bodies.

POINT Aug 17, 2015, 5:08:43 AM

Hunte had no power , as I have stated in this Forum many times the President of the WICB generally can do nothing unless he has the support of the Regional Board Presidents , who gave him his job .

The exception of this rule is Slick Dave Cameron , he is not only the President of the WICB but also the de facto head of the Jamaica Cricket Board . So in essence Slick Dave is wearing two hats simultaneously .

The fact that he & Hinds engineered the Coup that made WIPA a Branch of the WICB , means that in the WICB , Slick Dave Cameron is King David .

the Structure of Operations at Factory Road must change .

IN ESSENCE NO STONE MUST BE LEFT

UNTURNED REGARDING CRICKET IN THE

REGION . UNLESS THIS IS DONE WE

ARE SIMPLY SPINNING A TOP IN MUD .

In my opinion , the Regional Boards ; the WICB & Operations at Factory Road are :

CANCERS IN CRICKET IN THIS REGION .

THAT MUST BE EXCISED TO SAVE CRICKET

IN THE REGION .

In my opinion , at this point , the only option is radical Surgery if Cricket in the Region is to be saved .
A lot of years have gone , Reports have been commissioned & Ignored , and while other International Teams are making progress , WE are still Bottom Dwellers in the longer versions of the game .

Now this aint figment of my imagination. It is simply a brutal honest assessment of what I believe must be done to save Cricket in the Region .

With all due respect, your last post like many others before it, resembles a generic rant.

The imperfect WICB don't deserve to be the whipping boy for every ill in West Indies cricket because we live in a region which lacks discipline, good management and well rounded education.

The Board needs streamlining for sure because bloat equals inefficiency. However, our schools and general society don't do a good job of shaping our youngsters early, so it's unreasonable to expect the WICB to wave a magic wand and make everything ok when the cricketers get into the system..

We can all agree that changes should be made to the WICB, but it is the local boards that are responsible for the development of the cricketers.
Sending youngsters to Academies, then returning to no program in their Islands, will not help the youngsters.
Satellites academies and contracted players, coaches and structure is what needed.
The HPC is needed, but it should be for the Internationals, A team, or players sent from the satellite to work with coaches.

" Fish never rots from the Tail up ;
It Rots from the Head down "

YOU can call what I state any freaking thing You want . The fact is however what I state is True .

The WICB had Sponsors for all the Regional Tournaments . They abruptly left ; No One who are Sports Journalists sought to find out why
they left . In this Forum , some have stated that they had to leave because
their Sponsorship came into conflict with a Major Sponsor of the WICB .

Let me once again state a fact , that
you and others can never dispute . The longer versions of the game cruelly exposes the deficiencies of our Players .

Lack of Stamina - Mental & Physical ;
Lack of Concentration for long periods , in all aspects of the game ; the inability to build an Innings when batting ; the inability
to build fruitful Partnerships .

These are skills that have to be learned ; they cannot be bought in a Store or Super Market . The only method that I know of that can make
our Players proficient in those skills is by playing a lot of Cricket ,especially at the Regional Level .

So when I look at the stats of Players on International Teams ranked
above our Team , and then look at the stats of our Players , the disparity
is so great , that the outcome of these versions of the game is seldom in doubt .

The Windward Islands Cricket Board , has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous , for some years now , it
has mandated that the Windward Islands Tournament be played over 2 freaking Days .

In essence , 4 innings are crammed into 2 days . Now I know for a fact that the Windward Islands Tournament used to be played over 4 days .

Now in God's name tell me how the Hell any Player from the Windward Islands acquire the necessary skills
that are required to be competitive in International Cricket .

The Recent tour of both Australia &
England proved without the shadow of a doubt that our Players skills are
below what is required in International Cricket .

It is the WICB that is the Custodian of the game in the Region , therefore
it is incumbent on the WICB to make
our Players fully competitive at the
International level .

The Windwards tourney stopped being a 4 day tourney since the 70s.

In the 80s it was 3 day.

The majority of non fc club cricket, which the Windward Islands tourney falls under, GLOBALLY, is now 2 day. That is Grade Cricket in Aus, League cricket in England, Plate cricket in india and Club cricket in the Caribbean. EVERYWHERE.

Get that into your thick skull.

It is when Our Players get to be over
19 that their skills start diminishing . It is my understanding that the HPC
in Barbados has closed .

In the Region , some Islands are blessed with Flat tracks of land , and as a result of Colonization by the British years ago , there are some Islands , that not only have Clubs , those Clubs have their own Grounds .

This is very important , because Youngsters who join one of these Clubs get an opportunity to get advice and wisdom from former good &
great Players . Sadly that aint the case in ALL the Islands .

The question in my opinion is this :

WHAT REALLY IS THE ROLE OF THE WICB

REGARDING CRICKET IN THE REGION ????

For many years the WICB has conducted
itself in a 19th century Model , its
Members are Masters , & the Players
their Servants .

There must never ever be amicus relations with the Players , and they
have the power to hire & fire as they please .

Interestingly , after Recklessly pulling the Plug on the recent Tour to India ; It had to take a Commission created by the WICB to tell the WICB that players must be paid in a timely manner .

Always just around the start of Tours
there was disputes about money . Yet
WE expect that our Players would be in a good frame of mind ; and be fully competitive , never mind the fact that they are playing less Cricket than their opponents .

The People in the WICB are Arrogant ;
Incompetent ; Inept ; and have no Business Acumen .

I invite you to read what Mr. Wilkin, QC stated about the WICB , HE WAS A
MEMBER ; and the author of the WILKIN
REPORT , that was rejected by the WICB.

You seem to be trying to persuade people in this Forum that the WICB is
a model of excellence , when the truth is that it is absolutely the Worst International Cricket Board in the World .

Some might buy that Kool Aide you are peddling , but I will not buy it . I
simply want you to state what exactly is the Role of the WICB regarding Cricket in the Region .

My take is that when England decided to limit the number of Overseas Players playing Cricket in England , the role of the WICB changed drastically , and to this freaking day the WICB aint recognized this fact .

As I have stated several times in this Forum :

MORE CRICKET IS PLAYED OFF THE FIELD

THAN ON THE FIELD ; AND HAS A MORE

LASTING IMPACT THAN CRICKET THAT IS

PLAYED ON THE FIELD .

The move by England to limit the number of Overseas Players playing
Cricket in England was aimed mainly at OUR PLAYERS . The Players from other Countries were merely Collateral Damage .

Now if you don't believe that , tell me who had the fastest Bowlers in the World when it was decided to limit
Bouncers to 1 per over ???

Now what England did happened about
30 years ago . Our Players & Team were the best in the World . It was therefore easy for those in the governance of Cricket in the Region
to form a Regional Pro or Semi Pro League .

I am very sure that they would have had Financial Sponsors , because as I stated our Team & Payers were the Best in the World .

Those in the governance of Cricket in the Region sat on their Asses , and did not do a blasted thing . Today WE
are now sowing the Seeds of that lack of Foresight & Vision .

Had the WICB formed a Pro or Semi Pro League , Our Cricketers would be today still be among ,the Best in the World . I defy you or anyone to dispute this .

Short seemed an anachronism. He was a white Bajan with a trademark handlebar moustache, who had served in the British Army and risen to the rank of his enduring title, captain. As a useful club player, he captained Wanderers Club, then all-white, to the 1959 Barbados club championship, later to become its president.

In other words he was as much English as West Indian.

Look West Indians, who have been surrounded all their life by cronyism, corruption and and the willing acceptance of low standards, can't manage the game in a competitive international environment. It doesn't matter who is president, director etc, they will fail, all the while living the high life.

In many ways that's the source of the generational failure that followed.

A sterile educated class developed, bankrupt of practical ideas for real development. The education itself was based in a colonial past. So much of the education was to solve a system long gone and it soon became education for the sake of education.

Lawyers and doctors and more Ph.ds...but few agriculturalists while our agriculture failed and remained unproductive and unable to compete. None existent technical education, as we remained using methods from bygone eras.

That's a big part of what gave us these failed societies and the present lost generation.

As this region goes so does our cricket.

POINT Aug 18, 2015, 8:52:18 AM

Thinking outside the Box is needed . Also having a vision , and foresight
to take opportunities to do better .
In essence when you get lemons , you can make Lemonade .

Now if they had foresight , they would have realized that this was going to eventually affect the Standard of Cricket in the Region &
eventually the competitiveness of our
Players in the International Cricket Arena at some point in time .

In the mid 1980's England gave us lemons when it prohibited the number of Overseas Players playing Cricket
in England .

That presented a Golden Opportunity
for those in the governance of Cricket in the Region to be Pro Active . They did nothing .

The problem was that the Golden Eras
of West Indies Cricket were spawned
by the fact that most of our Players
were Full Time Cricketers , when not
representing the Region , they were plying their trade elsewhere .

When representing the Region , a lot of matches were played before & between the Test Matches ; including playing more than half the English County Teams .

I cite this because the Players in those days had opportunities to get acclimatized to the Weather & the Pitches . In the various Countries
they played .

Today WE live in a different Era , getting acclimatized to the Weather &
the conditions of the Pitches are not
in vogue these days .

All this is compounded by the fact that there are now 3 versions of the game . So as I will always state the
fact that Players on Teams ranked above our Team , play more Cricket than our Players , means that in the
longer versions of the game , in International Matches , the outcome is seldom in doubt .

POINT Aug 18, 2015, 9:17:17 AM

Now if those in the governance had started a Regional Pro or Semi Pro League , the disparity of matches Players on Teams ranked above our Team would not be as great as it currently is , and I have no doubt that our Team
in the International Cricket Arena , would be much more competitive in the
longer versions of the game .

Those in the governance of Cricket in the Region have yet to understand , that because Tours are truncated , in comparison to the Golden Eras of West Indies Cricket , Players have to be ready to play within 3 or 4 days after arriving in the host Country .

That being the case ; having a 1 week Camp & 1 warm up Match is the height of Stupidity .Especially when most of our Players are playing less Cricket than their Counterparts on Teams ranked above our Team .

Worse yet , the standard of Cricket in the Region is PISS POOR ; the very recent Tours of England & Australia proved this freaking fact .

Obviously , this means that any new Entity , & Personnel , with not much effort can & will better the Worst International Cricket Board in the World ; aka the WICB .

Therefore , there must be no wailing & Gnashing of teeth , when these people demit Office . THEY have brought Cricket in the Region to a new Low .

This constant denigration of countries which in real terms are not even 100 years old as independent states is always justifiable when you live out of them.

Care to examine the state of the US in 1876, a mere 100 years after their independence ? Or the trajectory of the UK ? Or Russia. Or Australia ? Or would you care to look at Africa and Asia.

The reality is that despite all the hot air, these are small vulnerable states whose prevailing main products are people who are exported en masse to add to the productive economies of larger countries.

Whilst debt fuelled in the main, the living standards in the Caribbean are way higher than the actual productive means that are supposed to be backing them. In other words the Caribbean is actually punching above its weight on the whole. Trinidad is the exception but its endemic corruption makes it analogous to Nigeria in Africa, and creates its own context.

With regards to cricket, what has India achieved vs its actual obsession in the game and its playing population. What has New Zealand achieved ? Pakistan ? South Africa ? Even England.

WI Cricket have OVERACHIEVED and future generations are being assessed vs that unfair platform of excellence which like many other patterns in history was a golden age for an underdog. And yes the investment into cricket by Government in Australia and England etc is MASSIVE in comparison to the Caribbean.

We do not have a commercial infrastructure to even sponsor sport properly. All major investments are local to each island except for a small group of sponsors, ie Flow, Digicel, Neal and Massey, etc. who span the region.

The Canadian banks have been threatening to exit because of the ongoing debt crisis across the region. This is on the background of criminal interest rates at a time when the world libor rates have been at its lowest.

In addition the economies of the Caribbean are under attack, with everything from offshore banking to tourism being destroyed by that so called friend the US.

So Im not sure what the angst is about. If your cricket fanship is beginning now...my sympathies, because I have seen and experienced the best we could do and it will never be as good.

Evidently , none here can find anything , wrong with what I stated ,since there
has been no criticism , or refutation
of what I have stated .

That being the case so far , I believe
that those in the governance of Cricket in the Region , were & still are asleep
regarding Cricket in the Region , from every conceivable aspect of Cricket.

I am aware that there are many things
& Issues wrong in the Region , Governments ; Corruption etc . However , with all due respect , I prefer to drill down specifically on the Topic of this Post ; WE are in the Rum Shop , where discussions on Cricket is discussed .

My disgust is with those in the governance of Cricket who it seems have learnt little or nothing from its mistakes ; and we have concrete
proof of this fact .

Many here state that to make our Players fully competitive is going to
cost money . When I state that I am
unaware , of any impediment that
prevents the WICB from seek Financial Sponsors I am told that it has contractual obligations .

I have no idea whether this is true or false , however if true ; that means that those in the governance of Cricket in the Region have exceedingly poor Business Acumen ; and has possibly tied itself up in knots .

It also demonstrates , at least to me that those in the governance of Cricket in the Region are not only very poor Stewards of Cricket ; their
emphasis is mainly on ensuring that its current Structure never changes , and also ensuring that their power &
grip is never diluted .

One can only come to this conclusion when the WICB has commissioned , the Lucky Report ; the Patterson Report &
the Wilkin Report .

ALL these Reports were swiftly rejected . Recently Mr Wilkin , the main author of the Wilkin Report , in a moment of Candor , in essence stated that the reason why these Reports were rejected was that those
in the governance of Cricket in the Region are fearful that their power & grip on Cricket in the Region will be diluted .

The fact is that in order to attract
Sponsors , Our Players & Team must be attractive to them . This then begs the question ; What must be done to make
Our Players attractive to potential Sponsors ????????????????????????

My take is that also in the mix , the
WICB & the Players must demonstrate ,
that they have harmonious relations .
currently that is very easy since Cameron & Hinds engineered a Coup
that has now made WIPA a branch of the WICB .

Our Players must win International Matches against opponents ranked higher than they are . However this
is impossible , if our Players are not properly prepared by playing
more Regional Cricket in all the versions of the game .

It seems to me that those in the governance of Cricket in the Region
have yet to grasp this freaking fact .
Perhaps saying that they have no money will one day magically fill their Coffers , but this aint Grimms
Fairy Tales . WE like it or not must face facts .

I have stated here many times that what ever money is spent to make our
Players fully competitive , can be easily recouped , when our Players & Team start climbing the International
Cricket Ladder in all versions of the game .

The gist is that , in order to make money you have to spend money ; now this aint Rocket Science . But so far
those in the governance of Cricket have refused to consider doing this .
This is why in my opinion , WE are currently BOTTOM DWELLERS in the longer versions of the game .

You should quit

Players and team must be performing for sponsors to be attractive to them, a guy like Gayle and Bolt, has options.

In reply to openning

YOU obviously did not read the paragraphs that followed what you stated . If you had done that you would not have written what you wrote .

The use of the word attractive here , implies winning matches, Simpleton .
In essence make Sponsors wanting to have their Brand associated with the Team .

Because not much has been done to make our Team fully competitive ,to Sponsors , it has become Bottom Dwellers in the longer versions of the game , and therefore unattractive to potential Sponsors .

Frankly the recent Tour by both Australia & England proved that the standard of our Players & Team is below what is required in the International Cricket Arena .

I have on many occasions stated in this Forum , what I believe needs to be done . So those in the governance of Cricket in the Region have a very serious & momentos decision to make .

Quite frankly the WICB is between a Rock & a Hard Place . It needs to get
Financial Sponsors ; however , to get them , my view is that there must be tangible signs that our Players &
Team are on an upward trajectory '

Let me once again state an Axiom :

SPONSORS NOT ONLY LOVE WINNERS

THEY LOVE THEIR BRAND BEING

ASSOCIATED WITH WINNERS .

Obviously if our Players remain at or near the bottom in the longer versions of the game in the International Cricket Arena ; that will not attract the attention of Potential Sponsors .

I recall that about 7 or 8 years ago
the WICB stated that it had repaid 10 million dollars to a source or sources it had borrowed money .

Perhaps it can again go to that Source or Sources , and borrow some money to do what needs to be done to make our Players fully competitive in the International Cricket Arena .

The current state of Cricket in the Region and in the International Cricket in the Region is just not going to improve , or get better unless our Players are more competitive & successful in the International Cricket Arena .

That is a decision that those in the governance of Cricket in the Region
must make , the ball as they say , is in their Court .

One thing I know for sure , thinking that magically one day our Team will
be the best in the World is a Mirage .
