HEADLINE: Creating a culture of leadership for West Indies captains

Judging from noises emanating from media, insular cricketing personnel and representative cricket boards too, West Indies present cricket captaincy came down to being nearly a mano-y-mano affair, at least an imaginary one, featuring Barbados’ young fast bowling all-rounder Jason Holder and Trinidad and Tobago’s seasoned wicket-keeper batsman Denesh Ramdin.
Even in cyberspace that would be a no-contest but that supposition of one versus the other is also far from the truth. This recent captaincy appointment of Holder to lead WI to Sri Lanka and onwards is all about efficiency, complete effort, hopeful and anticipated success, and most importantly, the future of what could positively transpire in WI teams over the next decade or so.
Paraphrasing actor Michael Douglas in the film “The American President” describing attitude, fight and determination needed when acquiring American citizenship, these are also required to be good present WI ODI, Tests and T-20’s captains. You have to want it bad but it is not at all easy!

My opinion is, if the WI develop better cricketers at the developmental level, they would have players who are better equip to lead when they get to the international level. The article by Croft is challenging to read.

Holder is far from the finished product. While Lara and Viv endorses the kid I still think he should have gone in as Ramdin's understudy on the rest of the tours this year and he should have skippered the warm up matches stc.
Then again Ramdin's imagination and guile was lacking in the recent tours. He seemed docile in his tactics.He was not aggressive enough and Holder does not seem aggressive enough or "wanting it badly enough" type.
Then again why appoint Braithwaite as vice captain if the WICB making all kinda excuses for not picking Ramdin as skipper?
Ramdin should withdraw from d squad.

I understand what you have stated , and it makes sense . The Problem is that the people in the WICB do not think like that . The first order of business for them is to get rid of those who they perceive as being Trouble makers .
Making Ramdin just a Player on the Team
rather than the Captain reduces his salary , and they are signalling that
they wish he Retires . In essence they are sending Ramdin a Message .

Did the TTCB not took the captaincy away from him last regional?
If your local board don't want you as captain, why should a regional board keep you?

If Ramdin not leading T&T is reason enough for him to be sacked after a good outing against the English, I just am curious to know what has Holder led so far to be catapulted to this role.

Let me again put the record straight, I think it is too early in Jason's career to make him captain, I said the same when he was appointed captain of the ODI TEAM.
I do think Ramdin should had captain the team to SL, with Jason as his VC.
My address from my previous post, is in response to posters and you, Yes if he is release in T&T, why should anyone retain him?

I am with you on this...Still you are talking about when T&T reject why should WI retain. But what happens to his performance in the recent Test series against the English? This is just a facade created by the WI management.
Sammy was built up as a great leader without any captaincy experience and nothing worthy happened for years togather. Now Holder is being built up as a great leader while he has no experience whatsoever at te leadership level. He sure is better than Sammy with bat and the ball. But I feel this is just the WICB setting him up for a long haul like how they let Sammy.
If Sammy can have an uninterruppted run at the top for 3 years why should Ramdin (Who has a good 3-4 years of International cricket in him) be discarded within a year? Because no one will question taht move

I find this portion of Croft article quite interesting,
n 1976/7, when Barbados’ Joel “Big Bird” Garner and yours truly, Guyana’s Colin Croft, became No. 160 and No. 159 WI international cricketers respectively, then WI captain Clive Lloyd, almost word for paraphrased word, said all of what Coach Meyer and Coach K repeated in 2015. Totally uncanny!
“Each player in this team”, intoned Lloyd before our 1st Test at Kensington Oval against Pakistan, ‘is a captain onto yourself. I can only guide you but you must know yourself and understand the culture of WI cricket and its teams. All of us are not from the same countries and are from different cultures. Not only must we play well, but most importantly, be at our best and win!”
Then WI vice-captain Deryck Murray handily supported. “Crofty and Bird, you are joining a team that has become accustomed to winning and may be setting records as we go along, who knows.
You do not have any time to settle in. Either your produce or you can be gone, as we in this room, now including you two, must work not just for good cricket but for total excellence!”
After those two speeches, and while trembling, we knew that we had to produce. We did. But do you get the impression from recent WI teams that such situations still exist. Again “Nah!”
Instead, WI’s recent cricket has become so bogged down in individual personalities and insularities that all we do now is squabble about “our” individual country’s players, not the collective whole of prioritizing the team’s culture for better efforts, hopefully huge successes too.
I wonder of the culture today, is the same.

This is not a culture that can come the moment you get selected in the WI side... This has to come from the junior grades.
I see a few guys showing spark here and there but challenge is the lack of system to develop them.
