HEADLINE: Cameron and Pybus need to answer for West Indies' on-field problems

CaribbeanCricket.com Dec 6, 2015, 8:20:33 AM

By inadvertent yet timely coincidence, the directors of the West Indies Cricket Board hold their quarterly meeting in St Lucia on December 12 and 13, in the middle of West Indies' first Test in Australia in a series long written off as destined to be embarrassingly one-sided.

Their first order of business is to come to a position on the CARICOM (Caribbean Community) review panel's report on its governance. WICB president Dave Cameron was slated to meet on the issue with the head of the CARICOM sub-committee on cricket, Grenada prime minister Keith Mitchell, on December 4. Since the report recommended the board be "immediately dissolved and all current members resign", to be replaced by an interim board, their response is easy to predict.

As potentially critical as it is to the future of the WICB, the continuing, and seemingly escalating, weakness of the team requires the directors' equally urgent attention. It has caused such overall anguish that it brought an emotional reaction from Sir Garry Sobers at a media conference during the team's recent tour of Sri Lanka.

The Australian media, if not Cricket Australia itself, acknowledged West Indies' dismal record in proposing that the more competitive New Zealand replace them for the showpiece Tests in Melbourne and Sydney. Because of already set international itineraries, implementing that proposal was impractical, but it did reflect widespread opinion.

POINT Dec 6, 2015, 1:45:32 PM

The failures of our Cricketers in the Region , are mainly due to the
Management of Cricket in the Region .

Most people love to be critical of the easiest target the Players ; blithely
ignoring the fact that it aint the Players who are in control of Cricket in the Region .

The do not set Policy , the duration of the Regional Tournaments ; the duration of Camps & Warm up Matches . It is those who are in the governance of Cricket in the Region , who must therefore bear the brunt of most of
the criticisms regarding the State of
Cricket in the Region .

The main reason for the failure of Cricket in the Region , are the following :

1. The WICBC's failure to understand that when in the mid 1980's England
limited the number of Players from playing Cricket in England ; it was going to seriously affect the competitiveness of Our Players .

2. The WICBC failed to understand that this policy by England , turned our Professional Cricketers from full time Players to being Part time Cricketers . Obviously their skills over time became Dull .

3. At that juncture in the mid 1980's
Our Players & Team were the Best in the World . That being the case ; it
would have been relatively easy to
form a Regional Pro or Semi Pro League . Sponsors love Winners & also love their Brands associating with Winners . So getting Financial Sponsors would not have been a problem .

4. The WICBC did absolutely nothing
regarding this dire situation until 3 freaking years ago . Obviously this
must be considered as wilful neglect by the WICBC .

5. The WICBC also failed to realize
that when the International Cricket Cabal changed the Schedules of International Cricket Tours , that benefitted Countries that had in place Pro & Semi Pro Leagues .

Let me say this , in the days when
International Teams went to England , they played many matches between the Test Matches . In those days when our Players toured England ; they played over half the English Counties & and other Matches .

Those many matches kept our Players skills finely honed and made them very competitive . It was these many matches that made our Players & Team Great , in lieu of having a Pro or Semi Pro League .

More importantly , those matches also assisted in making our Players acclimatized to the Conditions of both the Weather & the Pitches . Unfortunately , that aint the case these days .

These are the main factors that have
contributed to the current Abysmal state of Cricket in the Region & the
performances of our Players in the International Cricket Arena .

Who is defending Wavell Hinds in anything? Is Hinds part of the WICB, which sets policy for West Indies cricket.

Tell me, in which professional sport is the leader of players' union responsible for the administration of the sport?

Just so you know, I do not focus on the passport so, from the outset, I never supported Dave Cameron; neither when he was part of Hunte's administration nor when he ran for the presidency in his own right.

I knew, with him at the helm, it would merely be more of the same and nothing would change. He and all the other are all the same-including all the WICB directors who voted to confirm him.

By the way, again, what's with this "Jamaican Dave" nonsense?

Are you sure your only issue with Cameron is merely with his competence, or lack of it, or is there something else at play?

Why do you think "Jamaican" should be used as an epithet?

Maybe this latent prejudice gives some insight into why the Jamaican visitor, Shanice Myrie, was abused by that immigration officer in Barbados!

Let me remind you , that Fish never Rots from the Tail Up , but from the Head Down . This is precisely why WE
first have to deal with Cameron & Co.

It is the WICBC , that is in the governance of Cricket in the Region , it aint the Players . If the Players were in the governance of Cricket in the Region , then I would call for them to be removed .

These guys should have been fired long time. Is only in the west indies cricket lovers will fire key players before the administrators. In the NBA if a team is not performing the first person they get rid of is management / coaches.

Under Cameron/ Nanthan/ Pybus, our cricket keeps getting from bad to worse and based on the trend, we are all but dead! yet they seem untouchable while we have lost players like Gayle, Bravo, Powel, Chanderpaul, Fedel, Kirk Edwards. and others. It's almost too late for us

sandisha Dec 6, 2015, 3:53:45 PM

In recent years when our test players were on strike we still had some young players to turn to. But who do we turn to if the Holder team decides to strike? My point is, this year they decided to get rid of the college team from our domestic completion, which in essence is getting rid of our farm system that was used to develop and expose our young cricketers, instead of making it better. Everything is just a mess and something needs to give. We need to fire the entire board and replace them with people that have our cricket at heart.

Regarding your assertion about the lack of opportunities for our players in England from the mid-80's is a myth. More West Indian cricketers were playing cricket in England from the mid-80's through the 90's than at anytime in our cricket history.

That is just the basic issue. It is a same bunch over decades, with same mindset and approach driving WI through downward spiral. only thing is that with every leadership change the arrogance and disregard increases further.

These guys are too proud to work with players but don't feel ashamed where wi cricket is today and they were incapable of making any difference for decades. Leeches

What about the change in the Schedules

First these many matches honed the skills of visiting Teams , and also
allowed them to get acclimatized to both the Weather & conditions of the Pitches .

For clarification, the individual accused, and "found guilty" (he was not criminally prosecuted), in the Myrie incident was a policeman stationed at Grantley Adams airport, not an immigration officer. It might interest you that this individual (the same policeman) was recently arrested and charged with murder for summarily executing a fellow Barbadian citizen in broad daylight in front of a crowd of onlookers. There are bad apples everywhere bredrin.

We have all been unavoidably conditioned to view as beautiful or good looking a European ideal that for the most part does not resemble our people. This is why if you have two otherwise identical twins with different complexions the light-skinned one will be viewed as better looking; and it is why someone with "African" features like Gibson or Junior Bennett will general be viewed as not handsome or even ugly, and someone like Jimmy Adams who is closer to the European ideal is more likely to be viewed as handsome. It is for this reason that I will never refer to someone with African features as ugly.

Finally skimmed through this thread -

Two comments

1. TC - go easy on the PCL. It would not fix our cricket "overnight" and it should not be the only measure used to address it - but it is a step in the right direction.

2. Otis Gibson is ugly (in many people's opinion);)
That does not impact his ability (positively or negatively) as a coach!
