Play has been abandoned on day three of the third Test between Australia and West Indies at the SCG without a ball being bowled due to persistent rain. Umpires Ian Gould and Chris Gaffaney made the decision at 3.30pm (AEDT), well before the scheduled close of play at 5.30pm.

Rain swept across the ground all day on Tuesday and the covers were never taken off the centre wicket square. West Indies will resume their first innings, weather permitting, at 10am on day four on Wednesday on 7-248, with Denesh Ramdin on 30 and Kemar Roach yet to score.

It also was the wettest and worst-attended of the eight Jane McGrath Days so far.

After three days of play west Indies won the toss and batted are 248/7. With two days remaining and no side has completed an inning, we still have not been saved from the whitewash. I guess I will only breathe a sigh of releief if the rain abandons day four and the first session of day five.
