When West Indies came to England in 1976, did people in the UK realise that Clive Lloyd's team would go on to dominate world cricket for the best part of 20 years? West Indies had won the World Cup the previous year, but were then thrashed 5-1 in Australia. Garry Sobers, Rohan Kanhai and Lance Gibbs had recently retired. A new generation of West Indian players, Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Andy Roberts and Michael Holding, would go on to become household names. But in 1976, these players were as yet unproven at the highest level.
England opener Dennis Amiss played with Alvin Kallicharran and Deryck Murray at Warwickshire.

Amiss: It was no great surprise. They had a good track record and also some experienced players. We'd met most of them on the 1974 tour and were lucky to come away with a draw. By 1976, those players had been together for two more years.

Perhaps what I am about to state escaped attention . But as I have stated many times in this Forum , the dominance of Our Players were achieved
by the following things :

1. Most of Our Players were playing Cricket Full time , when not representing the Region they were playing Cricket elsewhere . Obviously
they were supremely fit , and honed in all aspects of the Game .

2. There were no restrictions on how
many Bouncers a Pace bowler could bowl in an over . WE also had a battery of the fastest bowlers in the World .

3. Despite the fact that there was not a Pro or Semi Pro League in the Region , The many matches played by our Players while on Tour , before & between the Test , and playing County
& State Cricket Matches . Made our
Players in International Matches acclimatized to both the Pitches &
the Weather .

The Malaise of West Indies Cricket has
its genesis in the following factors .

1. England's decision to limit the number of Overseas Players , playing Cricket in England . Most of our Players played Cricket in England when
not representing the Region .

2. The limitation by England reduced the status of many of our Players from
being Full time Players to being Part time Players , obviously this dulled their skills .

3. Then there was a decision to change the International Tour Schedule . No longer would all those matches before and between the Test Matches played , also the County &
State matches , which allowed the Touring Teams to get acclimatized to both the Weather & conditions of the Pitches .

The WICBC is also to be blamed for
the decline of Our Players dominance
in the longer versions of the game .
When England decided to limit the
number of Overseas playing Cricket
in England , in my opinion , the Onus was on the WICBC to fill that gap by having a Pro or Semi Pro League to keep all aspects of the skills of Our Players honed to perfection .

It must be remembered that at that
Juncture, our Players were the Best in the World ; that being the case it
would not have been difficult to form
with the help of Financial Sponsors to have a Regional Pro or Semi Pro League in the Region .

Sadly the WICBC Members , displayed
that they lacked Vision & Foresight .
They sat on their Asses and did not do a blasted thing until 3 freaking years ago .

So the above factors are what ushered in the genesis of the decline of
the prowess & skills of Our Players particularly in the longer versions of the game . I do not believe that
anyone can credibly dispute what I have stated here .
