HEADLINE: DOTTIN THREATENS TO GIVE UP GAME
CaribbeanCricket.com

West Indies cricket, already fraught with controversy involving some of its male internationals, appears in danger of losing one of its major female stars.
Barbadian all-rounder Deandra Dottin has threatened to walk away from full-time involvement in the game if something is not done by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) about the significant disparity in moneys paid to male and female cricketers.
In an interview with Barbados TODAY, Deandra Dottin stressed that the time had come for women in cricket to be treated equally to their male counterparts. She lamented the steep difference in the prize money that both West Indies senior sides received after winning their respective World Cup Finals in India.
Highlighting the gulf between the BDS$3 million shared by the men and the BDS$200 000 divided among the women, Dottin described it as “ridiculous”.

How much money have the women generated for the WICB for them to be making demands! They should be happy with globetrotting at the WICB expense! Talk about being ungrateful! SMMFH!

Dottin like everyone else has to weigh all the factors and then make the decision she thinks is best for her and family. If that means giving up cricket so be it.
But I think she shouldn't be hasty as good thinks might be around the corner for womens cricket.

Of course there should be parity
Let them go and play in a men's league
In fact let's scrap the gender based separation
Dottin can bat better than some of the men so too can Matthew
Truth be told I would rather each those two than watch paint

The Barriteau report has weighed all the factors.
Dottin is not alone.
...In terms of status, at the international level, the womens team is ranked No. 5 of ten countries ranked by the International Cricket Council. The mens team is No. 8 of the twelve countries ranked. Within the Region, in spite of their international standings, the professional womens cricketers do not enjoy the same status, attention and compensatory benefits from the WICB as the professional mens team. For the Panel, however, it is even more problematic that the WICB and the Territorial Boards have provided very inadequate infrastructural support, apparently expecting Governments in the territories to address the needs of women cricketers...

The report noted this but there is still a huge disparity in:
...While the women cricketers are very committed to the game, their compensation packages are very minimal. Ten senior players have decent retainer contracts. The sharpest difference is at the regional level where the women receive an allowance of US $ 150.00 for a two week period..

If the WICB were not an incompetent lot, their main focus right now should be putting together a marketing team to bring sponsors on board to take advantage of the 3 world cup wins.
I am not privy to the sponsorship agreement they have with DIGICEL but it seems as if their hands are tied. I find it hard to believe that localized sponsorship cannot be garnered.
Most of you on here are criticizing DD for bringing the women's financial woes to the limelight but you are all hypocrites.
Most of you live in the UK, the USA and Canada surviving in the social network of those countries.
I will hazard a bet that none of you will be able to survive on BDS $3000 a month. That is £1043, Canadian $1901, USD $1499.
The article is also misleading because it states the women are getting BDS $3000 - $6000 monthly. Not one of those women cricketers are being paid $6000 Barbados dollars monthly, not one.
They deserve better.

Same issue with USA women soccer.
The action submitted Wednesday by Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe, Becky Sauerbrunn and Hope Solo on behalf of the entire team references figures from the federations 2015 financial report, which showed the reigning World Cup and Olympic champions received far less money than the mens team despite generating nearly $20m more in revenue.

I have seen the Barbadian women parading all over in Digicel West Indies kit and I am asking if they are being compensated for wearing the gear.
The one member from the men's team was not wearing "Digicel", he understood, WIPA had taken away the money they used to get from this sort of activity. The women will start to ask questions in future as the become more aware of commercial rights and branding.

Same issue with USA women soccer.
It's the same issue only in the case of wanting more $$
The US women's national soccer team has a much more legitimate case based on 1 primary issue:
Who does the public AND TV....pay to see?
Viewership for the women's national team is significant in the USA. In some cases, they even surpass viewership for the men. That means TV rights paid by networks are also significant.
Similarly, huge crowds turn out to see the US women's national team in action.
So from an "eyeball" and sponsorship standpoint, the US Women's National team has a very legitimate case for parity in wages.
It's the same case that was used by tennis to arrive at a point where prize $ in major tournaments is the same for men and women.
The fact the number 1 ranked woman cannot beat the number 100 ranked male is immaterial.
A who dem come fi see is what matters.
The West Indies women's cricket team is not remotely in a similar position.
Viewership for women's cricket is insignificant. Spectators at matches even less so.
In time that will change. But now is not that time.
Should the women get more $$? Sure.
But who is going to pay for it? How much revenue do they generate?

i tend to take your post on this as well measured and closest to how I feel about it.
They do deserve better and now is the time to seek to maximize on the celebrity of their status while the iron is hot.
does that mean individual managers or WICB marketing arm being proactive?
What is the pay like for other womens teams around the world?
the gap is huge and the best way to close it is via marketing and winning so that they capture more of the tv and actual butts in seats at events.
They are not there yet...but I am hopeful that they will get there...the goal being better pay...not sure about the parity or equality...the audience is simply way too wide to be calling for that.

I am awaiting responses from all regarding this matter , because it

Obviously this feat should have Financial Sponsors flocking to the WICBC ; However , WE have heard nothing regarding this from the WICBC ; because it is currently fighting to

"...first class regional men players"..." Yes, that's right.
What then explains this first post from you?

Ok, you try taking 15% from an already dissatisfied male team.

The international players actually indicated that much (an agreed amount can be deducted to compensate regional players)...but by jove, to raid a large chunk of their earnings...
A clear distinction between
regional players and
international players was established before you joined the conversation.
And my post above also conveyed
quite clearly and very early in the game, that de
Courtesy was against
raiding peoples' salaries.
Again, all this, before the poster
black uttered a word.
Keep it coming.

I do not know enough about the details, but one will have to agree that this is a huge disparity between $3 million dollars and $200K. I do not care in what currency.
This behavior is not however intrinsic to the Caribbean and women's cricket. This is systemic in a world where women are viewed as not having the earning power of men, even if they provide the same service.
The WICB should probably review their pay structure for the Women team and find a way to resolve this quickly.
One of the problems with the WICB executives is the inability to resolve problems quickly. There is always a level of vindictiveness attached to any decision that they make and that almost always results in a negative outcome. That is why our cricket is not moving along in the direction that it is supposed to.

I agree generally...but there is still the unresolved issue of a group of men in the various organisations who are solely responsible for setting policy on womens' affairs as these policies generally disadvantage women.
This is not specific to our region...it is a general statement.
This issue was partly addressed in the Barriteau et al report.

In most cases (sports) they don't, tennis is the exception. I would like to see more parity but the only way to do that is with attendance, sponsorship and TV revenues. If you cannot achieve the above, pay will not be equal.

The problem is when grown ass men start using revenue generating ability as an excuse for not paying the women cricketers a decent salary in a scenario of surplus revenue.
It is shortsighted at best. How else can you insure continued interest and participation at the local level?
Giving the ladies adequate compensation must be viewed as an investment with the medium term objective of creating a reservoir for the Women's international cricket and fulfilling the dream of greater revenues from that new revenue stream.
You cannot boast of 3 million USD in surplus revenue and create a disincentive for women's cricket.

Like I said I do not know too much about the details of the payment that the WICB received.
I do not think that the Women are expecting a payday like the men considering this is their first major win, but one would agree that a $1 million dollars would sure as hell be a better deal than $200K.
Give the women an incentive to stay and play cricket otherwise be prepared to go through the same crap that the men's team has gone through with Gayle, Bravo, Pollard, Russel et al.

Conversely, how do you know that it isn't?
Taking the word of that corrupt organization at face value?
