ST JOHN’S, Antigua – West Indies Under-19 players Shimron Hetmyer and fast bowler Alzarri Joseph have been named in the 13-man West Indies A Team squad, announced by the WICB Selection Panel.

The team will face South Africa in a day/night 50-over match at Queen’s Park Oval on Sunday, May 29 at 1pm.

Hetmyer was the captain and Joseph the leading fast bowler in the West Indies Under-19 team which won the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh in February.

The West Indies A Team will be led by Test opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite. The squad also includes left-hander Evin Lewis, who was a member of the West Indies team, which won the ICC World T20 in India last month.

Several other players with international experience have also been selected: batsmen Jermaine Blackwood, and Jason Mohammed; wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich; left-arm spinner Nikita Miller; and allrounder Rayad Emrit.

The Proteas are using the match as part of their preparations for the upcoming Tri Nation ODI Series, which also features West Indies and Australia.

Kraigg Brathwaite (Captain), Shimron Hetmyer, Jermaine Blackwood
Damion Jacobs, Shane Dowrich, Jason Mohammed

How are A teams selected? Is it based on performance or its another WICB unexplained conundrum.

Same way everything else is done by the WICB..politics.

they finally throw Emrit a bone..another recipient of a WI consolation prize for an obvious sleight

Oh please enough of it, everyone can't make the team..... plain and simple, opinions will always be divided based on selection, Rahkeem Cornwall is a good player, but who does he replace in this squad.....go ahead pick one

As for Emrit this is not a bone throw, this is hard working player who has earn his spot here best of luck to you guy,

I am satisfied with this squad

Cannot understand for the life of me how Jason Mohammmed gets selected to any West Indies squad

Jagessar can count himself very fortunate to be selected after such a short time in FC cricket

Unless Leon Johnson, Roston Chase, and Motie are significantly in the mix for the senior team, I can't understand why they aren't included here

I am satisfied with this squad and especially pleased to see Emrit because of his good performance in the recent Caribbean 50/50..

Go A team! And ignore the mud slinging from the predictable quarters..

Finally rewarding some achievers. Im a Hety fan and wish him well

sunfish May 18, 2016, 4:04:44 PM

The senior men should play which means that the sitters could be chosen from Joseph, Hetmyer, Jacobs and Jaggesar.

camos May 18, 2016, 4:48:00 PM

Bro with all due respect this is an A Team and talents like Joseph and Hetmeyer must play.

Mohammed and Jaggesar will probably sit, I would play Hetmeyer and Joseph, I am eager to see this guys transition

I have no problem with them playing or not...it just seems wild.

So why not Springer or campbell and why Miller or Emrit among others

... why only some?

Springer has not played FC Cricket. Campbell is an opener so he is competing with Brathwaite and Lewis. This is one game not a TOUR they all cannot play.

... probably to add a little experience to the bunch as well as reward hard work.

A-team's bowling looking stronger than 1st team!

Batting even
lol

Kay May 19, 2016, 7:47:50 AM

I thought that an 'A' team is to give your aspiring international hopefuls, those you expect to carry the torch in a few years time some top class exposure. Why is Miller at 34 and Emrit at 35 eating some of this delicacy?

Justice for our youngsters. There should be at least 4 U-19 players in this team....

goliath May 19, 2016, 7:56:59 AM

In reply to Kay I would have liked to see one other..."The Enforcer" - Keemo Paul

What other international arena do perennial top performers in regional cricket have to display their skills?

They don't get selected to the senior team despite
consistent regional performances and more than outperform those who you're advocating for selection to an A team.

What then would be their motivation to continue to perform regionally?

A team match in disussion is a practice match for probables who can join the seniors if anyone breaks down... This is not a A team tour but just a practice match before the tour.
