Windwards all time 11
12th man
Danley Joesph
In reply to Wasp
there is a player I am missing. He was a badman on the road. Lara talked about him once.
Michael Findley and Winston Davis.
In reply to Ragga007
Findley replaces Murray, I already have Davis. I am looking for another bat and spinner. I rate Shane over Rawle Lewis.
Could you please explain precisely what You mean by Windwards All Time 11
. Because I can name some Players who
were vastly superior to those you have named . I await your response . Thank
You .

In reply to WestDem

In reply to thefacts
I will pick Mclean ahead of Cuffy, Maybe the two of them might partner Davis.

Phillip DeFreitas

It would be remiss of me if I did not state that some of these Players were
essentially barred from getting an opportunity to vie for a place in the
West Indies Team .
This was due to the fact that the WICBC during their time , never considered Players from the Windward
&Leeward Islands . This was changed
due to the influence of Sir Frank Worrell ; who spoke to Frankie Thomas
a Barbadian who lived in SVG for many years , and was responsible for the
building the Arnos Vale Cricket Ground .
Frankie Thomas for many years was the
Captain of the SVG Cricket Team and played in the Local Tournament .
From Grenada the follow players who were not yet listed easily comes to mind .
EVELYN GRESHAM ; a stylish Left
Handed batsman .
JOHN STEELE , a noted Pace Bowler ,
TED WALKER , a Hard hitting left handed batsman .
VESTER CONSTANTINE - Pace Bowler , who was the National GoalKeeper for
Grenada . He went to the West Indies
Regiment that was stationed in Jamaica , and was the Captain of the
Jamaica Football Team .
I am sure that there are others who I
have not remembered .
In St. Vincent & the Grenadines ,
there was ALPHONSO ROBERTS , who was
coached by Everton Weeks , he went on
a Tour to New Zealand with the West Indies Team .
IAN NEVERSON , a prolific batsman , who once hit Truman ; Statham ; and
the English Spinners in their prime
to various parts of the Field . Apparently his batting left an impression on Truman , because the
latter asked about Neverson on his next tour to the Windward Islands .
FRANK MASON , who once clean bowled Frank Worrell for a Duck , in Worrell's prime .
GARNET NILES , undoubtedly the best
Vincentian Wicketkeeper , who was even better than Michael Findlay .
From St. Lucia , the legendary " BAM "
CHARLES quickly comes to mind , he got wickets while playing for the Windward Islands , against an International Touring Team , and based on his performance was taken to Jamaica by the WICBC , but did not get on the Team .
There was a guy called ST.ROSE who was very good Player .I am sure there are others who I have not remembered .
In Dominica , A Touring International Team , declared that ALEC REID was the best Wicketkeeper they saw on their Tour to the West Indies . Unfortunately this was prior to Frank Worrell demanding that Players from the Windward & Leeward Islands get an
opportunity to vie for places on the West Indies Team . REID migrated to
England .
Mention has been made of IRVING SHILLINGFORD , who showed promise even at the Schoolboy level in the Windward Islands Secondary Schools Tournament .
I agree with the other selections from Dominica & the other
Windward Islands .
In reply to WestDem
There was also another Player from SVG
playing in England around the same time as Slack , his name escapes me , but I believe he played for Essex , and returned to SVG , I believe that he is also now dead .
His name is Neil Fitzgerald Williams .
He died of pneumonia in SVG 3 weeks after suffering a stroke .
Are we just naming names or selecting who allyuh think would be the best All-time Windward Island regional X1?
Devon Smith has to be in that X1.
Should a player who never represented a regional team be selected?
Hell NO.
where was Wilfred Slack from?
Some People are really SIMPLETONS ,
There were Players from the Windward
Islands WHO NEVER EVER GOT AN
OPPORTUNITY TO VIE FOR SPOTS IN THE
WEST INDIES , BECAUSE THEY WERE LIKE
IT OR NOT DISCRIMINATED BY THE WICBC .
Let me cite the case of IAN NEVERSON ,
HE MADE 90 NOT OUT AGAINST TRUMAN;
STATHAM ; LOCK & LAKER ; IN THEIR
PRIME . THE FACT IS IN THOSE DAYS
THE WICBC REFUSED TO CONSIDER PLAYERS
FROM THE WINDWARD & LEEWARD ISLANDS .
FOR SELECTION ON THE WEST INDIES
TEAM.
NOW THIS IS A FACT IT AINT A FIGMENT
OF MY IMAGINATION . HOW THE HELL CAN
CAN A PLAYER PLAY FOR THE WEST INDIES
IF HE DOES NOT GET AN OPPORTUNITY TO
SHOWCASE HIS ABILITIES ?????
In reply to POINT
There was a fast bowler from St Vincent by the name of Frank Mason who rumour has it was very good and should have played for West Indies. Did you ever see him and if so how good was he?
Let me cite the case of Charlie Ollivierre of SVG . He & his brother
lived near Victoria Park in Kingstown .The man who was in charge of Victoria
Park not only knew the Ollivierre Brothers , he allowed them & their friends to play in the Park .
The Manager of the Park , subsequently
was employed as the Manager of the Queens Park Oval .When he learned that
there was going to be a maiden Tour of
England , by a West Indies Team , he
told those in charge that they should
invite the Ollivierre Brothers to
assess their Cricket abilities .
So the Ollivierre Brothers went to
Trinidad , and Charlie Ollivierre was
selected to go on the first Tour of
a West Indies Team to England .
CHARLIE OLLIVIERRE is fondly remembered in Derbyshire , where he was called King Charlie . The point
that I am making is that Charlie
Ollivierre & his brother who later was on a West Indies Team that toured
England , got an opportunity to display their Cricket prowess , because they were recommended by the
Manager of the Queens Park Oval , and
their skills were rewarded , by being
selected to go on Tour to England .
CHARLIE OLLIVIERRE WAS THE FIRST &
ONLY BLACK MAN TO GO ON THE WEST
INDIES FIRST TOUR TO ENGLAND .
I invite ALL to Google Cricketer
Charles Ollivierre of St. Vincent .
In reply to Fivestar
Frank Mason was very fast , and well known in Windward Islands Cricket , he
was also for some years the Captain of the SVG Team .
As I stated , he did once at the George 5th Playing field clean bowled
Frank Worrell for a duck . Worrell at the time was not an old man .
Mason was probably about 6'-2 , and well built . The tallest fast bowler
from SVG , I believe was Cameron Cuffy .
Yes I knew Mason personally , the last time I saw him we were both at
a Function , where he was being honoured , and my late father was also being honoured . We sat next to each other , and he was telling me about the time during the second World War , while on vacation from secondary School , he went to British Guiana on a boat captained by a Captain who he knew . Well the boat
got to British Guiana , but took a long time getting back to Kingstown , with Rice .
People in SVG believed that the Boat was sunk by a German U-Boat , so when the Boat was sighted , coming into the harbour , there was a massive crowd , shouting for joy , that the boat had not been sunk by A German U-
Boat . He died some years ago .
Roy Marshal is the player I was trying to remember.

thanks for the info, I will like to see your team.

Still awaiting the best Windward Island team; all other teams selected was base on players playing regional cricket and others going on to represent the WICB, but every players so far played for Barbados, T&T, Jamaica, Guyana and Leewards.
Three players that should make an all star Windward team are;
Devon Smith
Irvine Shillingford
Junior Murray
In reply to methodic
I will have to think about the names
. I hope that your criteria is that
they must represent the West Indies .
Let me again repeated what I stated
NO ONE CAN DENY THE FACT THAT THERE
WAS A TIME WHEN PLAYERS FROM THE
WINDWARD & LEEWARD ISLANDS WERE NOT
CONSIDERED TO BE WORTHY OF PLAYING
FOR THE WEST INDIES .
Now when a Touring Team declared that
Alec Reid was the best Wicket Keeper they saw on the Tour to the West Indies ; and Alec Reid never ever got
an opportunity to prove whether this was true or not .
Why the Hell he is being disqualified
because he never played for the West
Indies ?? that in my opinion is pure
unadulterated B.S . This also applies
to Ian Neverson ; and others .
If the qualification is that they must play for the West Indies , I am not going to participate in this farcical exercise . Because the playing Field surely aint level .
In reply to POINT
they must have represented the Windwards or Combine Islands.
In reply to methodic
I just reviewed Irvine Shillingford first 6 years at the regional level, he scored a ton 4-6 years, thats remarkable
The first combined Island player to score two or more tons in a season was Viv.
In reply to openning
I can't remember seeing him, I listened to him playing on the radio.
In reply to methodic
I remember there was an uproar with him not selected to tour England, some was of the belief, he should had been selected ahead of David Allan
Irvine Theodore Shillingford
One year Irving Shillingford , won the prize for being the best batsman in the Regional Tournament by scoring the
most runs , I believe in the Shell Shield .
The BUMS in the WICBC asked Vivian Richards to privately present the prize to Shillingford . In essence
Shillingford was not awarded his Prize during the Regular Ceremony where the Prizes were awarded .
The Priest from Grenada wrote a book on some
Windward Islands Players , and in his book ; on the chapter about Irving Shillingford he mentioned what I have stated above .
In reply to methodic
thanks for the info, I will like to see your team.
Still waiting.

In reply to methodic
No Theo Redhead?
No Frank Mason?
No Ox Johnson
No Mindoo Phillip?
No Garnet Niles.
No Gresham.
No Shane Julien
No Wifred Slack
No Ted Walker
No Mignon....WI player early 1900s
Psst..
I don't think Grayson Shillingford gets in.
REDHEAD and Mason opens with Davis first change.
Norbet Phillip plays as allrounder.
Only Irving Shillingford plays in your top five.
Shilly on the Telly is my spinner..beating out Hinds and Joe Gibbs...since no one called him regionally.
Devon Smith may play for his mountain of regional runs..but keep in mind that he may not have made a Grenada much less a Windwards in the 50s.
In reply to methodic
Ignatius Cadette he was the best keeper in the caribbean at the time
Thomas Kentish
Clement John
In reply to Tagwa1
I forgot about Theo Redhead ; and Ted Walker ; Evelyn Gresham . John Steele.
In reply to Domic
When the West Indies went to England ,
the named Wicket Keeper was not Deryck Murray . I do not recall his
name , I however saw him , as I was
living in Barbados at the time .
Both Garnet Niles & Michael Findlay
were together on the same Windward Islands Teams , until Niles migrated to the USA .
I am also very sure that Garnet Niles
was much better than him . My selection of Alex Reid is based on
the fact that an International Touring Team playing in the West Indies stated that Alec Reid was the
Best Wicket Keeper they saw in the Region .
There was a very good Wicket Keeper , in late 1990's & early 2000's ,I believe from Dominica , he was very good but he unfortunately had a drinking Problem .
It will be interesting to hear Commie, Cheeks and Wesley's teams.
