TTFA, SSFL pay tribute to Lawrence Rondon
Ex-national footballer passes away

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) has extended condolences to the family of former national player Lawrence Rondon who passed away at age 68 on Friday morning.

Rondon, a former St Benedict’s College standout in the 1960s, was a member of the TT team that narrowly missed out on qualification for the 1974 World Cup. He played in all five of the final round qualifying matches in 1973 including the famous 4-0 victory over Mexico.

TTFA president David John-Williams paid tribute to Rondon for his services to the country. “Lawrence was a tower of strength in defence for TT during his career. The thoughts of the TTFA and its board of directors are with Lawrence’s family at this point in time. He is someone who made a great contribution to football in this country,” John-Williams stated.

The Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) also paid tribute to Rondon who coached Carapichaima East Secondary for five years.

SSFL president William Wallace described Rondon as one of the pioneers of the schools league. “Lawrence was a stalwart of the league and St Benedict’s College. Everyone who followed football back then would be able to recall the level of support and strength he provided in the back line while the likes of Steve David, Leroy De Leon and Warren Archibald took care of the attack,” stated Wallace

“His love and contribution for the game locally never ended and he went on to offer his advice and knowledge through coaching,” Wallace added.

4 Rondon brothers they were born for football.

The eldest played for Presentation College, a standout
amongst forwards.

Lawrence could play any position , he lead the leagues playing for Hermitage in goals as a striker , he could put that ball anywhere he wanted and that goalkeeper had no chance from 50 yards out.

The Brothers would form their own team , coming from a small country village called Rambert, a team that was invincible in that league. They could not be beaten.

I understand the youngest one Archie passed away few years ago, I am sure he will welcome Lawrence who will make that team again amongst the clouds above.

The parents were so quiet ,one hardly knew they existed.

T&T has lost a son, the likes we shall never see again.

To the Rondon Family my sincere condolences and thanks for the memories.

Thank you one and all. It was a trying year for him with ill health...he finally succumbed on 6.29.18 at home with family present. For quite a while I've been to busy to post, but I do take a look in as Im now doing at 3 in the morning. Last few days have been hectic with non stop communications back and forth, friends and family as situation like this warrants. I'm impressed sgt.J. at your investigative prowess but i will give you 8/10. 5 Brothers total, not 4...the youngest is still alive and posting. We had two formidable teams Botofoga in the 60's played the hermitage league, i was a juvenile onlooker then. The big 4 were central to that team and Lawrence was the strict taskmaster/captain/coach. He enforced strict night before curfews, break at your own risk. Another standout feature of that team was that the majority of the team were East Indians, solid players all - Doye, Harpoon, Jala, Indar, Narine, Lenny, Sookdeo and others i cannot now remember - not surprising because Rambert was/is an East Indian dominated village. I will always cherish growing up in Rambert in the 70's the many cultural lessons and lifelong friends I made. ( nb. someone on this board suggested i had an agenda sometime back...i just ignored lol...)

Lawrence was one of Brunner Boys/St Benedict's college from the late 60,s and was part of a team that arguably transformed football in Trinidad'...most members of that team went on to national duty to that eventful fiasco in Haiti 1973. Incredibly though one main man was missing from that Haiti squad - Dilly ( Leroy de leon). Imagine if he was on that squad what the result would have been...Gally got MVP, we hammered Mexico 4-0, Haiti 5-2 but lost 2-1.

Dave---I was in Benedicts' in the 70's but my love affair with them began with my brother and the privilege I had to enter their dressing room as a dumb kid in the late 60,s...lol....great memories for me...

Music - Correct is right. That defense in the 70's is what contributed to TT being a powerful caribbean team in the years prior to and after 1973....Murren, Figaro, Arnim David were stalwarts in the defense. You hooked me up with Stephen Hart in the past...He and I played soccer for Benedict's in the 70's, then an unsuccessful stint with the youth team under Roderick Warner and Carl Osborne. Hart is a good man.

Thank you all for the good vibes. The funeral is tentative for Wednesday 7'4'18. I believe he will get a send off from the Police Force with full honours. After Benedicts he played football with Caron i, and then with Police until he called it a day. It is anticipated to be a huge event with Police personnel, football community, past players etc.

To end I would like to put a prayer for Leon Carpette, another TT football standout...the hardest red man in football back in the 70s,80.s. He is not in the best of health and my thoughts are with him. sad

Military send off for former TT footballer

Former TT footballer Lawrence ‘Fred’ Rondon will be buried on Wednesday and not Tuesday as previously reported, his friends Devonish Paul and Selby Browne confirmed.

Paul said the funeral has been pushed back by one day to give Rondon, a former police inspector, a full military send off. He said the funeral will be held on Wednesday at the St Paul’s RC Church, Couva, from 2 pm and the body will be interred at the Freeport private cemetery.

Rondon, 68, of Freeport, died last Friday after a battle with cancer. He was a member of the national football team that participated in the FIFA World Cup 1974 CONCACAF qualifiers. He also served as captain of the St Benedict’s College football team in 1967 and represented the Colleges League Football Team, South Trinidad and the Caroni Limited Football team.

He leaves to mourn his wife Amber and four children, Lawrence Jr, Leslie, Lisa and Richie.

Paul who has been a friend of Rondon since 1967, recalled that throughout his football career, “Fred never got a red card. That was the discipline of this man.”

In a release, The Veteran Footballers Foundation of TT (VFFOTT) also described Rondon as a gentle giant and a man of integrity, “with the desired moral fabric and a gentleman with his God as his guide.”

Taking a look at the team photo and noticed they've made a mess of matching names to bodies...totally out of wak.

I don't remember all of them but

Back row right to left Edgar Vidale (coach), Selwyn Murren, ? , ? , Carpette(red man), Devenish Paul(fineeee), ?, Rondon, Ken Henry (trainer)

Front , Right to left -Wilfred CAve, ? , Gally Cummings, Tyrone de la bastide, ? , kelvin Barclay..maybe...definitely not Gerald Figeroux. Figeroux was a tall Portuguese straight hair looking man.

Nice picture that...pity the names are off.

I noticed that also.

Will explain how I met Lawrence at the Commons, La Romain.

My father played against your two brothers, the eldest one ( Presentation) and Lawrence (St Benedicts)intercol, my Dad played for Naparima College.
Naps were a very weak team in those days .

I was fortunate to win a scholarship to attend Naparima College and met villagers from Rambert Village when my dad visited a friend that lived near Rambert cemetery.

These young men from Rambert spoke of the Rondons and the
team Botafogo.
My Dad in a conversation with Brunner
said that Lawrence was the best player on that St Benedicts team.He could play any position on that football team , he can see the whole field of play. Instead of putting him as a striker with that powerful right foot , Brunner put him in the back field to start the plays. Lawrence decides the attack.

Brunner noted that if the English scouts saw Lawrence he will play in the English leagues , I left to study in England on an Island scholarship and didn't keep track of football for years.
When I came back home to Moruga , I saw him coaching the school team in Central T&T.
Lawrence was a quiet individual , who said very little and had a contagious smile.

Ignore posters with idiotic claims , they even claim I am a woman. There are no agenda, ignore the trolls.

Eternal rest Lawrence , I hope Archie welcomed you home.

Funeral of former TT footballer Rondon tomorrow

THE funeral service for former national footballer Lawrence Rondon will be held at St Paul’s RC Church, Couva Main Road, next to the Couva Police Station, tomorrow at 2 pm.

Lawrence “Fred” Rondon was a former captain of St Benedict’s College in 1967, and represented the Colleges League Football Team, South Trinidad, and Caroni Limited Football Team, before representing the Police Service with distinction. He was a member of the national football team that participated in the FIFA World Cup 1974 CONCACAF qualifiers.

The Veteran Footballers Foundation of TT (VFFOTT) expressed sadness after hearing the news of Rondon’s death at age 68 on Friday.

A release by the VFFOTT said, “Lawrence Rondon was a gentle giant, a man of integrity, with the desired moral fabric and a gentleman with his God as his guide.
