I saw this last night and was highly impressed with Ingrid Griffith's work.Shirley Chisholm was a pioneer black female politician who made it easier for us to accept black females as genuine political leaders. The fact that today Stacey Abrams and/or Kamala Harris are viewed as essential on a Democratic ticket for the Presidency is in large part due to Shirley Chisholm.I was pleased to learn of the tremendous influence her father Charles St. Hill a Guyanese, played in her political awareness. The blatant sexism that Shirley had to deal with from both white and BLACK politicians was DISGRACEFUL. I urge all and sundry to see this masterful work by Ingrid Griffith

UNBOSSED AND UNBOWED
In reply to Dukes
Bossman St. Hill was a "Bajan" who returned to Barbados for a while before heading to NY
Seriously though, I hope it hangs around for a while because i would love to see it on my next trip to NYC
In reply to Dukes
Shirley was a good friend of my great aunt - met her decades ago.
In reply to Walco
hahaha. you beat me to it. St Hill? a real bajan name. i am always awed at the old bajan names that exist in Guyana. names that you hardly hear in Bim nowadays. Harmon is one. that name always brings a smile to my face.
Dukes is fundamentally correct notwithstanding he failed to mention any bajan connection but it is all good
In reply to sudden and Walco
He was no more Bajan than Clive Lloyd and Lance Gibbs!!!!!!! LOL
When Shirley was about 5 years old she along with her two younger siblings were sent to Barbados to live with their maternal grandmother and returned to the US some 5 years later.
In reply to Dukes
Easily one of the strongest woman I have ever met, wit and intelligence high up there as well.
In reply to sudden
I actually came back to address the omission but was too late. Her Grandmother was credited with Shirley's attitude in life but it was her father who piqued her interest in politics and was a vociferous supporter of her political career, even leaving in his will some $10,000 USD to Shirley and ZERO to her siblings which as you can imagine caused an uproar in the family.
In any event all this is a side issue. Many of the older black male politicians were openly hostile to Shirley and what tickled me pink was an interaction Shirley had with a young black student named Maxine Waters!!!!

In response to my query The actor last night who researched Shirley for 4 years said
Yes,he was born in B.G. Im not sure if he has Bajan relatives. Im told the St. Hills were from St. Anns in Guyana. Shirleys mother, Ruby Seales, was from Vauxhall, Barbados
P.S Dukes never heard of St. Ann's in Guyana!!!!!!
We really do not know our history!!!!!!!!
In reply to Walco
Charles St. Hill
In reply to Dukes
Please share the Maxine Waters story.
I recently heard Al Sharpton talk about the huge influence Shirley Chisolm had on him as a young man. He worked/volunteered for her as a young man.
In reply to sudden
Man anytime I see the name St. Hill I assume it's a bajan. Ince is another name and of course Brathwaite. I knew a lot of St. Hills in Bim
In reply to Walco
You never heard about "Sudden Walcott"?
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
No
but I met some Walcotts the other day in Jamaica
In reply to Dukes
Dukes, fundamentally we are saying the same thing once you account for the bajan lineage. we have no issues now.
there is also a close cuba / bajan thing and a close panama/ bajan one which a cawmere schoolmate used to blog about and update.
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
how about Fuzzy Nick?

I think Dukes made a mistake. He is married to a Yardie from St. Anns, Jamaica?

U R correct
Her mother was born in Christ Church, Barbados. Her surname was from her former husband, Conrad Chisholm.
Shirley is one of four black Americans to have won a caucus and/or primary for a major American political partys presidential nomination,
Others are:*Walter E. Fauntroy (1972; Democratic;
*Jesse Jackson (Democratic; in 1984
*Barack Obama (Democratic; in 2008,
