HEADLINE: Analysing that Shai Hope innings

The West Indies went down to a 7-wicket defeat to Bangladesh on Monday and one man’s performance continues to cause a divide right across the Caribbean. When Chris Gayle was dismissed by Mohammad Saifuddin for a 13-ball duck in the 4th over of the West Indian innings, Shai Hope joined Evin Lewis out in the middle. Given the tournament both Lewis and Hope had been having prior to this game, there was justifiable cause for scepticism among Caribbean fans.

The pair took their time to settle their nerves, but Lewis soon came into his own. Hope, however, continued to stutter as he has throughout the tournament thus far. The right-hander struggled to time the ball and to rotate strike. Hope took eight (cool deliveries to get off the mark, and seven (7) deliveries to get from eleven to twelve (11-12) runs. When he eventually got to his half-century, he had faced seventy-five (75) deliveries for his troubles.

I wish some of these analysis would pay more attention to the actual game and less to analyzing numbers after the fact.

I suspect the analyst would prefer a smooth 12 ball 30 from Hope.

Maybe that is our problem. We are entertainers at all cost. Look pretty hit 3 sixes bowl nuff bouncers. The world gives us nick names as calypso collapse cricketers.

Hope better get with the program

The thing about some of dese armchair analysts, some who have never played the game, is that they doh understand that losing wickets means having to consolidate all over again. If batsmen cud get singles off every ball dey faced, the minimum ODI score wud be 300 for each team.

Dey get on like the bowler, aided by fieldsmen, is not thinking of how to restrict the batsmen.

Every time Hope, who seems to have been given the role of batting deep into the inning, started to up his strike rate a wicket fell which slowed him down again especially knowing the capabilities of our last 3 batsmen

Have the analysists who criticise Hope checked the stats for Kane Williamson's innings? You have to bat to suit the bowling and conditions. Hope at least tried to do that like Williamson did. That is why he is among the top tier one day batsmen.

Forget the analysis. There was none nor was there any attempt. But Shai must learn to dispatch the loose balls with greater precision and regularity. Several of them went unpunished in the innings under reference. This would have substantially closed the gap between his runs and balls.

Shai is at #5 in the ICC ODI rankings for a very good reason and he is in very good company.

Poppycock... it was a good thing he batted with a level head otherwise the game would have ended much earlier. West Indies batsmen play with more brawn than brain...flashy shots, poor judgement, not being conscious of field placement, not reading the situations in the game and much more.... it is a 50 over tournament not a 20 over tournament!!!!! Look at how Warner, Williamson, Root, Rohit Sharma, Kholi build their innings.... the players should watch them and learn

What a rubbish article.

If Hope doesn't make runs that WI team can't post a good score.
