HEADLINE: Holder bemoans lack of reward for commitment to West Indies cricket

Former Windies captain, Jason Holder, admits he has been left disappointed with how some things have been handled by West Indies cricket, particularly given his monetary sacrifices over the years.

The 29-year-old, who made his debut for the West Indies in 2013, has been an ever-present in the regional team.  Since 2014, Holder, who has been both ODI and Test captain, has been on a retainer contract with Cricket West Indies (CWI), which gives the regional team priority in many instances.

“I could sit down here and safely say I’ve passed up a lot of money to play for West Indies. I could have been a lot more well off than I am. I consider myself really blessed because I’ve made a lot of money in my life for a guy my age…but I probably could have made a lot more but I’ve always had that desire to play for West Indies,” Holder told the Headstrong An Innings With… podcast.  The player was addressing the situation that arises when players are often forced between signing lucrative deals and representing the regional team.

Sir Diffident, take the money and run. For God's sake be bold, if only this once. lol

Man still pining fuh Pybus and the BI yes

Hopefully he might be able to gain some perspective and appreciation for some of his colleagues who opted to make different decisions during those times.

It doesn’t mean they love West Indies cricket any less, or have less desire to represent West Indies. They just made the decision that was best for them and their families.

As Marley sang.......who feels it knows it LORD

Could well be Jason looking for a pay increase as he feels he aint going to get a IPL place next year.
Boxing clever!

This is the way they are treated

Proud of you Holder.

West Indies cricket has been very good for Holder.

I like the World #1 all-rounder Holder as a player and he will be fine financially and otherwise but CWI has to make a strong statement that regardless of the status of any player, except for life-threatening illnesses or injuries, opting out of a tour, especially as the team leader is not acceptable.

So Pollard gets the boot?

Holder losing the captaincy could have as much to do with his mediocre results as with Bangladesh. However I do agree with his broader point about loyalty to the team not being rewarded. I cant see why Roston Chase, for example, after all these years skipping one tour in Bangladesh should be sidelined and lose his contract. If it was all about performance then surely Gabriel would not have got a new contract.

I see you all are coming around to the reality of what I have been saying all along.

My argument for years but somehow it did not resonate with certain old farts until now.

A cricketer's career for all intent and purposes is over at age 38 unless you are a talent in demand like Chris Gayle.

I think JHo should follow the UB's example and do a KLAS-like rant about CWI. What say you? smile

sgtdjones May 6, 2021, 10:48:28 AM

Fuzzy only comments when T&T players leave for better paydays .

He is quiet when JHo comments about finances.

cool cool

I saw this coming, and he is correct after all the sacrifice he has made, only to be booted for others who weren't willing to make any sacrifices....that equates to pain

I share your pain my brother

camos May 6, 2021, 1:12:42 PM

what really is Holder's issue, he is the top payed WI player for 3 or 4 years now, he declined to tour Bangla and Kraig grabbed the opportunity with both hands?

Walco May 6, 2021, 2:22:27 PM

what really is Holder's issue

Holder is simply saying that he chose in the past to be loyal to WI cricket and forego contracts that would have paid more money than he earned playing for West Indies. Apparently he now regrets being loyal to WI cricket. Not sure why that is, but he apparently realizes that loyalty to CWI is a one-way street just like loyalty to Donald Trump.

Also, I am reliably informed that certain of our globetrotting stars have been counseling Holder and the younger white-ball players not to make the same mistake they made when it comes to WI cricket. Apparently Holder has already made that mistake ...

I agree I can't see why, his memory is also short, when he decided to stick with WI he was not in big demand elsewhere.

I am not so sure it is regret but simply pointing out a reality. I agree with you about making the same mistake. I think he is paving the way to become a globetrotters and is setting up a strawman excuse.

I wish him well. He could have done all that without mouthing off.

FuzzyWuzzy May 6, 2021, 3:39:32 PM

Holder had an IPL contract before he became captain. It was allegedly negotiated by Gayle and Bravo.

imusic May 6, 2021, 3:39:51 PM

What’s the mistake?

FuzzyWuzzy May 6, 2021, 3:43:49 PM

Ask Walco what he means, but I am talking about setting up strawmen.

What loyalty to West Indies cricket is this guy talking about? Remember last year when the West Indies needed you, you and the other ungrateful, prideless money grabbers abandoned the team to go make T20 money? You should consider yourself lucky to be still in the team.
