HEADLINE: TTCB officials upset at Bryan Charles snubbing from Headley-Weekes series

THE non-inclusion of Trinidad and Tobago off-spinner Bryan Charles from the three-team Headley-Weekes triangular series to crown off the CWI regional four-day tournament has drawn a furious reaction from local cricket officials.
Five TT players – Joshua Da Silva, Anderson Phillip, Darren Bravo, Joshua James and Keagan Simmons – were named in the squads for the tournament, which gets under way from April 19 to May 6, at the Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG) in Antigua.
Red Force coach David Furlonge said, “It is disappointing to say the least. There is no justifiable reason why Bryan Charles was not considered, especially after his consistent performance during the recent season where he picked up 21 wickets and finished fourth in the averages.”
He said the 27 year old who plays for Queen’s Park Cricket Club should have an automatic selection having been a regular in the West Indies “A” team set-up last year when he played against Bangladesh.
Instead Barbadian Chaim Holder, 29, with 18 scalps for Barbados including nine wickets in one match, appears to have been given the nod ahead of the Trinidadian by chief selector Desmond Haynes, and his compatriot Roland Butcher.
Furlonge on Wednesday said the selection policy was not consistent with the stated objective of the Headley-Weekes teams being picked “from the leading performers in the 2023 West Indies Championship and those deemed to be on the fringe of the Test team.”

Some good points made here but still I have no issue with what Trinidad cricket officials are doing. In fact for territorial boards should be speaking for their players unfaired

I personally think that regional boards should not question selections as we hardly find that they question in relation to players other than their local players. Having said that, Cariah's selection and Charles' non -selection are not comparable. Cariah was selected for the specific role of a legspinning allrounder. Was there any competition in the Caribbean for that role? Charles competes with the other right arm finger spinners. The only real stand out in that role is Cornwall. The selectors perennial favourite is Chase but of the regional off break bowlers, Charles ranks near the top so the debate about whether the others who were selected are better than him is a valid debate.

Not just Trinidad and Tobago cricket officials are upset about the poor selection of Desmond Haynes but rather all cricket lovers in the region ought to be upset with Hon Desmond Haynes for some of the players he has poorly selected. I mean on what basis is Devon Thomas selected? He shouldnt have been selected for the tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa but after his return lets take a look at his scores in the 3 matches he played as a batsman mind you. Against Barbados 20 & 4; against Windward islands 1 &6 and against Guyana 2 & 0. What hurts even more is the fact that Devon Thomas is not a teenager or in his mid 20s but the man is 33, yet Haynes keeps picking him and Raymond Riefer
