HEADLINE: UAE to host West Indies for three ODIs in June, ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

SHARJAH, UAE – As part of their preparations for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe, the West Indies men’s cricket team will play three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Sharjah next month. 

The day-night matches will be played on Monday 5 June, Wednesday 7 June and Friday 9 June. Both teams will depart for Zimbabwe at the end of the series for their World Cup qualifying campaign which begins on 18 June. The all-important tournament will confirm the remaining spots for the 10-team ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, India.

General Secretary of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), Mubashshir Usmani said: “We are delighted to host a former World Champion side like the West Indies ahead of the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe. In recent months, our team has produced some sensational performances in the ODI format which have helped raise UAE cricket’s profile.

I think the WC qualification series was a good thing for the format, instead of pointless series, there was for the majority of these matches, something to play for.

Unfortunately the ODI Super League is being scrapped.

I think for the ODI format to continue in the long-term, less is more.

Cariah, Carty and King were in the last ODI squad, with them only finishing a few days beforehand in Bangladesh, I wonder if they'll be rested, replaced or excused mid-series.

Will there be a concurrent T20 league going on in some little known part of the world or will all players be available for selection provided they can find their way to the airport? big grin big grin
