Just over a year and five months into his appointment as West Indies lead selector, the honeymoon period of The Right Honourable Desmond Haynes and his panel has ended.

On January 6, 2022, Cricket West Indies (CWI) named Haynes to take over the chairmanship as the replacement for Roger Harper, after his contract was not renewed. Since then, criticisms of Haynes’s selections have started to become more strident!

While the initial reaction to Haynes’ appointment was that mostly of optimism, there were some elements of doubt as to his suitability for the job.

Haynes is highly respected throughout the Caribbean for his legendary career as an opening batsman for the West Indies. He announced his entry into international cricket on his debut with a knock of 148 against Australia and scored a further 8500 ODI runs, including 17 centuries during his six-year career.

Now that Jimmy Adams is gone, Haynes has no excuse to continue the exclusion of The Wall.

De man got another year to fix tings and get back into Shallow's good book.

At a glance no not even as his test stats 17 tons yes but I:m guessing he Greenidge and Gayle have 7000+ runs and avg's over 40 but under 45

No more Skerrit, Simmons and now Adams so the Hon Desmond Haynes should have gone too. I feel he would do a better job as batting coach or have him and Adams swap positions because Jimmy seems to be more of a West Indian than Desmond Haynes that’s only concerned about Bajans

There has been some questionable selections and ones that appear to take place without thought. Take for example the ODI yesterday against the UAE - Johnson Charles came into the squad as a replacement for Devon Thomas yet he was selected as part of the starting 11. Now please don't get me wrong, I have no problem with Charles playing. My question is why was he not in the original squad if he now walks right into the starting 11? Was it that Devon Thomas (whom he replaced) was selected as our opener? And if so, did we select a squad without a back up opener? What was the plan really?

If Thomas was not accused of match fixing and had to drop out, who would have opened the batting for the WI against the UAE? And if Thomas opened and got injured on tour, who was the back up opener? Why didn't that back up opener who was originally selected ahead of Charles not then play above Charles? I highlight all of this to say the squad is being selected with no rational thought process as to how we wish to make up out team.

Haynes did make 148 on ODI debut against OZ in 1978

BTW it was a gem of a knock.
He became an ODI poker not long after

I remember listening to that knock. It was remarkable.

Don’t try to take that away from the man. He really did BURST onto the scene then.

Kudos to him as well that he didn’t try to outhit Greenidge. Desmond Haynes was part of the one of the best opening pairs in the history of the game. They can’t take that from him.

His performance as a selector however is a completely different story.

One really has little, if anything at all, to do with the other.
