HEADLINE: Bishop: 'West Indies' decline pre-dates this group of players'

After West Indies failed to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup following their loss to Scotland in the Super Six stage of the ongoing World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe, ESPNcricinfo spoke to Ian Bishop about what the loss means to fans back home, how to manage West Indies' available talent pool, and the changes he would like to see in Caribbean cricket going forward.
As someone who grew up watching an era of West Indies cricket that you did, then going on to play for them with pride, and having since followed them in recent years, what are your emotions on the team not making it to a World Cup?
It is a difficult day, and difficult to sum up. To not have West Indies as part of the World Cup is, to me, unimaginable. I can echo the sentiments of many fans and West Indian supporters, of whom there are still many.
Coming at the back of the 2021 T20 World Cup disappointment, and then not making it into the main round of the 2022 T20 World Cup, it is a stifling reality of where the [West Indies] cricket is at the moment. Not just being with the Associate nations, but that some of those nations are beating you quite convincingly. So there's a lot of work to be done almost immediately, because the talent level, which I know there is, deserves better representation, or certainly a bigger need to express itself.
The results from the recent ICC events you speak of, do they give you the feeling that something like this was on the cards? That this was always a possibility? And does that make you feel like this slide could have been arrested sooner?
Yes, it has been a gradual decline. I've always said this pre-dates this group of players. We haven't played consistently good ODI cricket against the top nations for perhaps a decade now. The T20 team, after having been two-time champions, they have slid. So like big corporations who were at one time at the peak of their powers, and then through, I suppose, a lack of vision or whatever you want to call it, they disappeared off the business scene, [and that is what has happened] for West Indies cricket, two-time world champions, who popularised the field for ODI cricket.

What a disgrace and embarrassment to West Indies cricket. All these players, coaches, managers should be fired. WI need a new start, where are Viv Richards, Croft, Lloyd, Ambrose and Kalicharran why are they not involve with this resurrection. These stupidness has to stop.

Get rid of these selectors, coaches, manager. This is not working, bring back Ambrose, Chanderpaul to coach and hire an outside consultants from New Zealand, India or Australia.

Our problem is huge and deep. First, Sir Desmond Haynes and his selectors should be fired and let’s start afresh.
Second. We don’t play enough cricket and team selection is not based on performance during our most recent ODI regional competition . It’s a situation where players like Charles, Hope, Pooran, Holder, Chase, Myers and others either 1-2 games and didn’t show any form while others didn’t play a single game and yet got selected ahead of those who played the entire regional ODI tournament and performed.
Very biased team selection:The most valuable player in our last regional ODI tournament was Alick Arthanaze with two centuries. Yet they picked players like Charles Carty, Myers ahead of him. Charles and Myers are good T20 openers because their job is to slog and not necessarily to build an inning. But to put them to open in longer versions is nothing short of a pre planned disaster and that’s what we got.

If Myers is going to play in an ODI she should play as a middle order batsman and bowler somewhat like Collis King. Playing him as opener in ODI and Hope who got all his runs as an opener batting number 4-5? Hope was the one anchoring the innings for us and somehow he or management decided for him to bat in the middle order? Man according to Bishop we do have the talent to beat any team but I will add that we don’t have an executive plan. We can’t execute, we can’t field, we can’t play under pressure and we sure don’t have good bowlers .

The connotation here is that you want to blame Chrissy for our calamity. She was the loudest voice against the hiring of foreigners. Recall Diesoon.

We’ve been shamed and embarrassed by the Sir Desmond Haynes T20 and now ODI teams so let’s put them behind us and help Desmond Haynes pick a test team to face India the next ten games. Here is my team:
1.Brathwaite
2. McKenzie. We need an opener that can attack the Indian pacers
3 Chanderpaul,
4. Arthanaze
5. Hodge( Windsor park ts not pace friendly so Hodge with his left arm spin plus a batsman from Dominica would be a good fit).
6. Royston Chase. I would play him because in his last match on that same ground he had scores of 63 and 101 not out and with the ball he took 4 wickets
7. Jason Holder
8 . Da Silva
9. Cornwall
10 Joseph
11. Mc Allister. I would play Mc Alister ahead Roach because he has pace that can unsettle any batter on any pitch. Roach has not been effective on this venue and now he is older, much slower and less effective.
I like Jordan and good to have Jason seals back but along with Myers and Roach they would have to see how the Dominica game goes

So what about the dodo heads who call themselves players. When bowlers show up, batters can't make runs. When batters show up, bowlers can't take wickets. And all of them fielding like this is their first day on a cricket field. Get rid of all of them...every single one!

The infrastructure (managed by CWI) is not producing the quality players needed for international competition, don't blame the players blame the system that create them.
